Here’s a short backstory of Clover from Underluck!
Ever since the monsterkind had got banished into the underground, many monsters started to notice how unlucky things have been going. This eventually led to the creation of a cult called the Circle of Fate, where the belief was pretty simple, but will ill intentions: Fate can be altered through luck and this luck has the ability to bring in children, break the barrier and kill all humans on the surface.
They first tried converting the extracted misfortune from monsters into artificial luck, but that was unsuccessful. The hopes were not up.
Meanwhile, Clover, a beloved happy skeleton was leading a perfect life inside of Snowdin, getting good but also jealous looks from the monsters around. The thing was, Clover was a bit too lucky among all of them and it raised suspicions.
The Circle was notified of this and their hopes were raised. They needed to act.
Clover was kidnapped and put into a lab room, where the cult scientists strapped tubes and needles onto him to extract his luck.
They performed various experiments, one of them (the least harmful) being the classic “coin flip”.
Clover was determined to escape and after that experiment, he knew exactly what to do.
One of the scientists accidentally left a coin a bit too close to him, and so he reached for it and did a coin flip for his escape.
”For my escape from this room.”
Heads. Success! He tore off the equipment, but that was not as nice as he expected it to be. All the collected luck leaked out and smashed itself into Clover’s left eye socket, causing him terrible pain and a crack around it. Black liquid oozed out from it, burning a few permanent streaks under the socket. Despite the pain, he managed to kick down the door and run out into different hallways, getting chased by guards and scientists. He flipped the coin again.
”For these guards to trip and slow down the scientists!”
Heads! Success! The guards tripped on stupidly flat floor and came crashing down like a pack of elephants. Clover still ran until he reached the exit. Locked! He flipped the coin.
Tails. Shoot. The guards were up on their feet by then and were running towards him like a pack of bulls. He stood frozen by the exit and just when they were about to squish him into a pancake, he jumped away. Crash! The door broke down.
“Who designed this door?”
He wondered, but didn’t think about it much as he ran right out. He ran until his legs were about to give out, his energy drained from the frequent coin flips. He managed to hide in a cave, where he bandaged his eye and took a break.
Over time, Clover kept discovering the limits of his new powers and keeps hiding.
