to be honest there has never been a fictional character i’ve actually wanted to date. like. i want them to date each other. i don’t want myself as a person to be involved in this scenario whatsoever. what would i add to this narratively? what’s my thematic purpose in the narrative? immersion breaking.
#im the director bitch not the actor
don’t hide this in the tags that’s exactly it
Dance, puppets! Dance!
Every time I see a bunch of posts from Neil Gaiman on my feed I think, "Neil... you're procrastinating writing again, aren't you"
Neil.
Sorry as someone who teaches rhetoric this is a wonderful response to the Paradox of Tolerance. I cannot tell you how many times my students have had debates about this. This is the response. This does indeed fix it. I cannot wait to tell this to my classes now. Philosophically and rhetorically this completely resolved the Paradox of Tolerance and I am floored by its simplicity and angry I never saw it before.
Sherlock Holmes having a universal ace experience -- expressing disinterest and immediately getting called an inhuman robot.
#images#sherlock holmes#sorry i don't turn rabid and marry the prettiest girl in sight at the push of a button my dear watson
Watson is like "of course I proposed marriage to a girl I met two days ago, I'm normal and make rational decisions"
#I read this part just the other day#He literally proposes within two days it’s crazy
Every Sherlock Holmes remake that tries to make Watson the straight man does him a great injustice. Mfer is a total madlad. Everyone's like "oh he's not addicted to hard drugs and doesn't do chemistry experiments in his bedroom for fun" there are subtler ways to be completely unhinged.
The thing is, Watson may or may not instigate the Situations & Shenanigans, but he voluntarily spends most of his Sherlock Holmes, who DOES!
““Normal”“ people do not do that.
Watson will show up at Holmes' place and be like "are you doing any investigations of super weird shit today" and Holmes will be like "yes I am cornering this dangerous mass murderer, you should come and bring your gun in case anyone tries to shoot us" and Watson will do it without question, thinking "I'm so glad he's got something wholesome to distract himself with so he doesn't take more cocaine".

Hi Neil, what's your opinion on the rewrite of Roald Dahl's works in the name of "making it available for all"?
Thanks.
I'm a lot more comfortable with this kind of thing when it's done by a living writer to existing work. I remember as a kid picking up a copy of John Masefield's Collected Poems, and seeing a 1930s errata slip in the book, which said in the poem London Town, replace
“‘And craftily fares the knave there, and wickedly fares the Jew.’
with
“‘But wretchedly fare the most there and merrily fare the few.’
And I nodded my 9 year old head in approval. Someone had pointed out to the poet that that line was awful, and he had fixed it.
I can't imagine anyone deciding to fix that line after the poet had died, though.
I removed a line from "The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish" (over the objections of my editor, who wanted to keep it) because too many people had reached out to me and told me it had upset them or their children on reading it, and I realised it was being taken in a way I hadn't intended. So on later editions it went away.
And having said that, language changes. Enid Blyton's children's books have been rewritten, her children renamed (farewell Dick and Fanny) and so forth, with the idea that the Blyton estate is a commercial entity that wishes to remain viable. The Dahl estate is in the same place. So is the Dr Seuss estate -- and they chose to simply let some of the earlier books go out of print. There comes a point where it's not about art, but about sustaining a commercial entity. And I don't know what I think about that.
Dahl himself made changes to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because he listened to the NAACP and realised that he didn’t want the portrayal of the Oompa Loompas to carry racist overtones.
The news in 1970 that there was to be a film of the book drew the attention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to the work and they said the importation of the Oompa Loompas to the factory had overtones of slavery.
Dahl insisted there was no racist intent behind the Oompa Loompas but also said he found himself sympathising with the NAACP. As a result, he rewrote them in time for the second US edition as white hippyish dwarves hailing from an invented place, “Loompaland”.
(source)
Which in my opinion is a completely reasonable decision, showing his willingness to listen to other people and make changes to his own work so it comes across the way he intended and doesn’t carry overtones of unintended bigotry.
However, the rights to Roald Dahl’s works are currently owned by Netflix. I have no illusions that these newer changes are for any other reason than commercial gain. And I think there’s value in preserving the works of an author as they were written, even if the language used isn’t up to modern standards of inclusivity. You don’t get rid of inequality and bigotry by erasing it from historical records and pretending it never happened and that standards for what is considered appropriate language have never changed throughout history. All the concerns about the language in Roald Dahl’s books could have been handled with a short preface explaining that some of the descriptions may feel outdated to the modern reader, instead of a complete revision with at times frankly baffling textual changes to sentences you have to work really hard to find offensive in their original form.
In 1561 an innkeeper called Hew Draper was imprisoned in the Tower of London for sorcery. Whilst incarcerated he made these carvings in the walls which displayed astrological symbols and numbers.

Trans Witches are Witches: 69 items for $60.00
Honestly, this shit with Hogwarts Legacy is just like what happened with Chick-fil-A like ten or fifteen years ago. Some of y'all might be too young to remember it, but it went almost exactly like this shit today, only the target was technically gay people (not like we aren't all lumped together when push comes to shove, but gay was the political scapegoat in US politics at the time, as trans people were still on the fringes of social awareness).
It came out that the people who own Chick-fil-A were donating to organizations in other countries that were actively working to get gay people there killed, and were also very monetarily invested in stripping gay people of any legal rights they'd amassed in the US. So a lot of queer folks were asking for allies to boycott Chick-fil-A to show solidarity.
And it turned into a giant fuckin circus for bigots to rally around. There was even a support Chick-fil-A day, I remember it because I was a server at the time and our restaurant was empty most the day - while the line for Chick-fil-A down the road was like a mile long consistently.
But while that was obviously annoying, that wasn't what hit people the hardest. Cuz we expect clowns to wear the shoes, right, it's not shocking.
What disappointed people, or really demoralized a lot of young queers at the time especially, was the allies who would still go there. Because they like the sandwiches or fries or whatever. The people who'd march with them in the parade or be supportive of marriage equality, who would then turn right around and give their money to people who were trying to actively harm their friends.
Because the chicken was good.
I remember a friend of mine being really just absolutely broken up over that, trying to understand some of her friends reasoning and at the time I couldn't give her an answer. I could now, though.
And it's this:
Talk is cheap.
It costs nothing to say things. A person can say whatever the hell they want, any feel good flowery thing, and it doesn't really cost them.
But when they are asked to actually give something up - or put their money where their mouth is and just....can't do it. Well then there isn't much else for them to say, is there? At least nothing that's worth anything.
Some people had to find out the hard way that the choice between a chicken sandwich and funding people who did not believe in their dignity as a human being was, in the eyes of certain allies, apparently really hard. Too hard, in fact.
These allies would march in the colorful parades and go to the bars for drinks, but in the end, you couldn't actually depend on them to inconvenience themselves. They were fair weather allies, and they were there for the party and that's about it . They wanted entertainment, and it didn't matter if that came from having fun gay friends or a tasty sandwich.
This is the same thing, really, or pretty close to it.
These types of people just wanna have fun. Either you, their friend or whatever, are fun or the game is fun, and if you stop being fun by incidentally making them feel a little guilty about where they spend their money , then they might just choose the thing that doesn't make them currently uncomfortable.
And I'm not saying these people who say trans rights online but who also really, really want to play wizard game and already have are horrible people or anything - they're just not very good. They have no real character. And unfortunately there's not much you can do to change that, other than investing time and energy in people who do.
