Some Thoughts and Advice on the Modeling Industry...
Little thoughts for models/actors/comedians/photographers ext. My boyfriends uncle is an actor and he always tells me about how important hard work is in the industry. And I just started my modeling career (like a week ago lol) and I was talking to him and said, “Do you think I’ll ever become famous... like Taylor Hill? Or Adriana Lima?” and he kind of just looked at me and said solemnly, “You don’t go into entertainment with the intentions of becoming famous or rich, you go into it for the love of the work. If all your in it for is the money then your in it for the wrong reason.” And when I first heard that I was like, that’s suuuuuper old fashion advice. Like when athlete are like “Don’t play ball for the money, do it for the game”. But I started thinking about it and then it kind of made sense. I’m super big into youtube as a viewer (Shameless plug subscribe to my youtube Alexa Levidi) but whenever you look at some of the biggest content creators of the platform, they didn’t go in with the intentions of making money. Hell the OG youtubers didn’t even have that option. They just did it for the love of the art. And now you have amazing content creators like Phillip DeFranco, Shane Dawson, Jenna Marbles ext. And they have made it their job NOW but at the time it was for the love of the game. So in the last week I got signed to 2 modeling agencies, one in New York and one in Atlanta. And I was doing all the google searches on like ‘How much money do beginning models make a year’ and ‘How to apply for tax returns as a model’ and so on and so forth. And I kind of had a moment where I sat back and thought about why I was doing this... And how this wasn’t normal behavior for me. When I did cello and bassoon for all of middle and high school, I never picked up my instruments with the intentions of being the next Zuill Bailey or YoYo Ma... I did it because I loved it. And because I loved it I worked hard at it. Like 4-5 hours a day practicing until my hands where so sore I had to wrap them and the callouses on my finger tips clicked like nails on a table. But the pain, and the stress, and the fiscal outcome meant nothing to me because I loved it for its art. For the art of making music. And now I’m working in another art based profession, only now my whole body is the vessel and I love it. Adriana Lima didn’t become Adriana Lima because viciously googled annual model incomes. She became Adriana Lima because Adriana Lima (Take a shot every time you read Adriana Lima) loved the art. She was discovered and launched into this fun, and loving, and exciting industry! And I know I haven’t seen like the super hard core side of fashion yet every one hokie pokies about, but in the end. It’s art and its beautiful. And I HOPE not expect that one day this could be the source of my soul income. But even if I do it as a part time thing, I’m doing something I love. And that’s all that should matter. But I will put 110% of my heart into this because this is something I’ve wanted my whole life. So what if I’m never a Victoria Secret Angel, or have 4.5 Million followers on Instagram. When I’m 80 years old I can look back on these years and smiling knowing I did something I loved and something millions of girls want to do. And I was lucky enough to be noticed. So let the games begin! I’m so excited to see where the next few years take me what I can learn from this and how I can grow! And anyone in any industry I would hope feel this glowing happiness to be involved, because its the most fulfilling thing knowing your on a path that could lead you to something even more wonderful than what your life already is. And I am so thankful to everyone in my life who has helped me and will will me on this path.
