A cholita paceña, or an indigenous Aymara woman from La Paz, Bolivia wears an English bowler hat, a luxurious shawl and multiple, pleated skirts. For a minute, she pauses in front of a 'No Parking' sign downtown, to answer her cell phone.
Celebrated during the summer solstice in honor of Ekkeko, or the Aymara god of abundance and prosperity, La Feria de Alasitas, or a festival of miniatures, represents the earthly desires of Bolivians. Think of little houses, vehicles or money. Through a veil of smoke, a mysterious yatiri, or an Aymara shaman, flashes a toothy grin after performing a ch’alla, or a ritual blessing involving alcohol, coca leaves and incense. To paceños, blessings are essential for dreams, or miniatures, to become reality.
