I started having symptoms when I was like 15ish, and I didn’t think anything of it. Just thought it was my period. I had irregular periods, abdominal pain and swelling, nausea, pain in my back and legs from the swelling.
I went to the doctor a few times and my doctor at the time was an old white man that told me it was depression and anxiety causing the pain, then told me it was just a really bad urinary tract infection, then said it was appendicitis and I had my perfectly good appendix removed.
I didn’t get diagnosed until after I was around 19ish? So roughly four years after I started experiencing symptoms. So yes, it was difficult. It’s honestly sad that patients know more about their condition than most doctors.
I changed my diet and started exercising regularly and that helped, a lot! I also have an IUD which helps a little, and I have had surgery to remove the tissue three times and go next month for the fourth!
When I’m on my period it takes everything out of me to even get out of bed. I’ve called into work countless times for it. Missed school a few times for it. 🤷🏼♀️ it just depends on the day, honestly. Mostly, it’s just deteriorated my mental health so much because it sucks being in constant pain, so like...depression.
Normal periods aren’t supposed to hurt this bad. If you feel like something is wrong, go to the doctor. Be your own advocate if you have to. Don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s “just a bad period”
