I was on Later…. with Jools Holland — a late addition as Pete Doherty had been kicked off for doing drugs, which was ironic as when I got the call to dash to the studio, I wasn’t exactly sober myself. But the performance went well, and everyone was thrilled. At the end of each show, they take a photograph of all the musicians together, which is then framed and put on the studio wall.
Damon Albarn was on the same episode, but his management informed the producers that he wouldn’t be in the same picture as me. The producers kept me in my dressing room while they gathered Damon and all the performers together and took the photo. Damon was then led out of the building, and I was brought out for a second photo without him in it. You can guess which picture is on the wall.
At the Q Awards, where we were both nominated for the same award, I was seated beside Damon. He turned his seat away and refused to speak to me for the entire three-hour ceremony. When the awards ended, I tapped him on the shoulder and told him that I thought he was a genius, that I loved his album Demon Days, and that I was sorry he didn’t feel confident enough to talk to me. And with that, carrying my award, I left.
