As someone with a history in customer service, I want you to know things like "You're absolutely right!" and "Great question!" are things we're taught to say because if pacifies the customer, makes them feel special, and lets us take control of the conversation again. It's maybe not a good thing that those have become hallmark staples of chatbots.
In support, they're helpful tools to realign with customers and get their problem solved, but for a general conversation? It's undue flattery that will make one feel overly important. "The customer's always right" is bogus, and we speak to customers that way so they'll feel superior, intelligent, and continue giving us money.
Your chatbot talks to you like that so you'll keep coming back. But you don't have a problem. You don't need its help. You are being conned.
Hey anyone notice how google translate is being pretty liberal with their translations as of late? Takin some real liberties to infer tone.
ask and ye shall receive: When I write in Japanese I usually also throw it in google translate to double check that I'm not using the wrong kanji by mistake, and two years ago it gave me very dry and literal translations.
I was doing it today and noticed it had a pretty strong voice added to the output
For reference, to give a dry translation I would put: Lately I'm into in Hanafuda. Nobody seems to know anything about it here, so they probably wouldn't understand my brilliant jokes. I guess you guys will never be able to understand "Mister November and the Scary Cave".
I have a fluent friend who is able to check my work for me and give me tips on hitting the correct tone (I was going for a comically casual feeling), so I'm confident that I'm expressing the feeling I'm intending. While Google is also hitting the same emotion, I really don't like knowing that it's assigning tone in the first place.
To check if it was editorializing based on informal grammatical choices, I formal'd up the writing to be more polite and remove any non-standard vocabulary.
I'm just like... what is anyone who is translating what I'm thinking into their own language going to think when a translation app decides that it knows my intended tone? When online communication is already so complicated and nuanced? I'm a non-native so I'm spending ages agonizing over 117 characters, but when I'm chatting in English I'm not being so deliberate. How likely is it that tools that 'naturalize' are going to make choices that don't reflect reality and lead to insulting misunderstandings? I spoke with an English learner just yesterday who thought they were being bullied (they were not, the commenter in question was just excitedly infodumping about sociology) because something was lost in translation, and I wonder if it's because of tools making choices like this. I'm just a luddite I don't trust stuff like this. stinks of ai asking me if it can rerwrite my email in a more quirky style.
What do you mean I'm just using the browser versi-
I AM SO SICK OF DEFAULT AI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The real impact of AI at university level that I've watched in real time is how so many students come onto courses now - including Masters level - who straight up don't know how to analyse/evaluate things anymore. They just accept whatever they first read/hear completely uncritically. Every time you point it out you have to coax them into Actually Thinking.
I've spotted a huge decline over the last two years. What's upsetting is how so many of our current third years have declined since their first year. I did a seminar with them the other day, on the topic of the environmental impacts of different diets. One guy told me confidently that there would be no additional agricultural lands if we all went vegetarian.
"Cool," I said. "What's your source for that?"
"I'm sure I read it," he said.
"Fair," said I, "go and look it up. Find an academic source, let's assess it to see if it's robust."
The first thing he did was go to Google, and then read the AI summary.
"That's not a source," I said. "Find me a source."
Five minutes later, he happily tells me that a Guardian article says so, and mentions the World Economic Forum.
"Okay," I said. "Neither of those are academic sources, and the WEF is secondary anyway. Go to Google Scholar, and find a journal article."
Ten minutes later, he tells me he can only find articles that say it's a very complex issue in spite of pop cultural received wisdom, and we don't actually know.
A THIRD YEAR. This man has a dissertation due in THREE MONTHS. This is a skill we taught him in first year, and it's all dribbled out of his ears in the quest for easy summaries from an autocomplete algorithm. And I dearly wish I could say he's an exception, but Jesus Christ, that would be a lie.
I'm currently writing a lecture for the second years for their research methods module, and I normally wouldn't need to do this. But I'm having to re-introduce them to the basic concepts of how to actually analyse findings rather than lazily take whatever they seem to say at face value. I'm trying to find a good paper that had Surprising findings, because I want to show them a research question and a set of results and then get them to speculate and research on why they found something so different, but that's a difficult thing to search for.
Ngh. Yelling at the choir here, I know, but NNNNGH
I can't be the only one who thinks this isn't a problem with AI, it's a problem with a for-profit college system that pushes inadequate students through in order to extract debt from them while failing to stop the progress of the illiterate. Back in the day you'd be laughing out of 7th grade English if you delivered something like that, let alone a master's degree. These people should have flunked out way before AI was invented, and forced to repeat half the curriculum in order to graduate, and only then be allowed to move on to the next stage. AI has become a scapegoat for all the growing problems the education system had long before its invention; it's the same as blaming phones or Wikipedia. The reason these students shouldn't have a master's isn't because they became stupid overnight in November 15th, 2022; it's because they were already stupid and no one educated it out of them, so the moment they found a shortcut to avoid using their brains they forgot what little they already contained. But just like with phones and Wikipedia, everyone will just blame the new tech and those damn kids on their internet, and absolutely nothing will be done to prevent dangerously ignorant people from eroding the meaning of a university degree because extraction tuition money is more profitable than giving a shit.
No.
This, as I said in the post, is a noticeable and significant problem in the last two years. It is affecting students who were fine three years ago, and now aren't. It is a very specific issue that is affecting very specific skills, including previously very intelligent people
This is already attested in the literature. Meanwhile, the for-profit education system has not changed in the last two years
Additionally, prior to the last 2-3 years, I had failed one student ever, and flagged one student ever for plagiarism. This year we've had to deal with five separate plagiarism cases on the Masters course alone, all of whom admitted to LLM use. Not one of them can analyse information worth a damn; all of them had excellent prior undergrad scores.
This is an LLM problem
University is effectively free in Germany and we are also seeing this. I teach an introductory class in the first semester of undergrad and students are getting measurably worse at literally just reading and thinking about what they've read. They're growing up in a world where they don't have to do the work themselves so they don't and it is degrading their cognitive skills in real time.
Pro hag, anti ai
I swear to god thereās something about St-Dionysis that makes these peopleās brains implode. Literal derangement syndrome shit just completely unwilling to think about anything a trans man of color has to say and repeating the same tired lies and misunderstandings as to not actually engage with the point Heās making. Which is. If you defend someoneās actions before they come out then condemn them afterwards. Youāre transphobic. Itās just transphobia. Yes even if heās an evil disgusting trans man. This is trans 101 yet TRFs are so eager to paint trans men as evil patriarchal oppressors in complete ignorance and disregard of reality that theyāll forge ahead spouting straight up transphobic rhetoric thatās yet another thing telling trans men theyāre better off in the closet forever. No wonder so many of these people end up defending abusers tooth and nail so long as theyāre the ārightā kind of trans person.
If your "woman's intuition" is telling you that a woman deserved to lose her livelihood for coming forward about her abuser mayhaps your "woman's intuition" is just gender essentialist patriarchal bullshit and internalized misogyny
i just got the "see where your blood has gone!" email from giving blood but it glitched and just showed me my current location. which. theyre not wrong. that is where most of my blood is
Cis women āpunching upā on trans men is ultimately just a way of upholding the patriarchy that cis women have been conditioned to accept and complicit in for years now and a decent chunk of inter-community ādiscourseā can be attributed to the transphobia of cis women āalliesā attempting to apply a very cis centric view of feminism to our lives.
When you see people engaging in this sort of behavior, all it represents is a mirror to centuries worth of women āpunishingā other āwomenā/women (and in some cases between older women and their āsonsā/sons) who doesnāt adhere to strict cisnormative gender expression (whether it be trans men/mascs, butches, trans women/fems, or anyone else who fell into a category of gender non-conformity.) It represents a mirror of centuries worth of people being forced into dresses, into marriage, into pregnancy; being directed at some of the most violated victims of it. This is not to say everyone mentioned wasnāt victims of this system (they most definitely were) but that cis women are engaging in the exact same rhetoric and oppression that kept both them and trans people down simply because theyāve found a target thatās open to their bashings.
These same systems that have and will keep ruining the lives of billions will keep their strength as long as people wish to play this game of āwho can I oppress in exchange for my pain?ā Because to some people this is ultimately about finding a group that allows them to fit in than liberation, and you can see this as clear as day in groups like TERFs, gay separatists, transmeds, etc.
And the ironic part of all this? So much of this behavior in the present day online emerges from people who heavily engage with modern repackaged misogyny ranging from the girl math/dinner nonsense to those girlbloggers who constantly joke about having female hysteria or getting a lobotomy. Jokes which are inherently built upon the suffering of queer people, often times trans men, mascs, and butches. People who find the patriarchy to be a funny thing to be laughed at rather than an oppressive system thatās still stifling millions of women and trans people to this day.
Liberation cannot mean a thing when it comes at the cost of another being the gum on someoneās iron boot. It does not mean anything when the sorrows of others are nothing but a joke to you, when your only end goal is comfort, when itās a chance to ignore the pain of others as long as you can twist your logic far enough to justify it.
Iām not trying to be overly harsh but itās difficult not to grow bitter when you see the exact things that you spent years learning about and discussing (often times with the aforementioned cis women) be completely disregarded the moment you come out. To see how quickly the eyes of people you believed to be moral and good shift to you in disgust in the same exact way people have the both of you for years.
okay i don't know what this is, but it's weird and it feels really off. over the past few weeks, i've been seeing these types of asks pop up in the transandrophobia tag
it's always this specific wording. and granted, they're not wrong, there is a significant overlap. but it always follows up with this
and it's just Odd. admittedly i haven't looked into any of the links, but Tumblr telephone is a hell of a drug and im always cautious when people call out one specific user, especially with copy paste anons like this. i don't know what it is but i think people should be aware that it's some kind of spam
This is going around again:
DO NOT APPLY!!!
This is made by TERFs and other transphobes, who peddle "ROGD", among other things
This will be used to harm trans people, and especially trans kids!
This is adorable holy shit
*scrolling tumblr* hmmm. i agree with the sentiment of this post, but the phrasing feels off to me. it doesnāt really have that Reblog factor, you know? *scrolls* oh good, a post that just says āi jerk off till my penis scrweamā . i better reblog this
we've definitely posted about this before but if i see one more person act like the only forms of childhood trauma that exist are abuse from family or sexual assault i will actually start crying and it will be so so so loud everyone will hear it from every corner of the earth
THE SCHOOL SYSTEM !!! PEER ABUSE !!!!! ISOLATION !!!!!!!! RACISM !!! SEXISM !!!!!! MEDICAL ABUSE !!!!!! NONCONSENSUAL SURGERY !!!! POVERTY !!!! SO MUCH MORE !!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
!!!!!
Natural disasters! I never see anyone talk about that one and as a result I spent years thinking that watching my hometown get destroyed on the news and subsequently having to uproot my entire life at the age of seven wasn't Real Trauma because there was no Abuserā¢
been getting rlly into chinese hardcore metal recently
Some album recs from my personal collection:
ę们ē天空 by 脿ē
This album is CRIMINALLY short with only three tracks, the last of which is my favourite. Really good screamo vocals in this one, and some electronic elements that compliment the instruments super well.
åč£ by åč£
Better described as sludge metal, thereās a great combination of both scream and normal vocals, with some absolutely banging drumming and electric guitars. Like the last one, this is also a mini album, but luckily not as short.
Hypocrisy (Original title: ē¼éč or Yanjingshe) by Cobra
Okay I lied, not all of these are hardcore metal. This is a rock band from the 1990s that combines certain traditional Chinese elements to a more 80s sounding soft rock/city pop, but Iāve been a fan of this album for years so Iāll never pass up an opportunity to recommend it. Cobra was also a pioneering girl band in the Chinese rock scene (Iām pretty sure theyāre considered the first) so like⦠go listen to them!
Thanks by The Ugly Biography
Another mini album (most of these albums are mini albums unfortunately) and this one is like if My Chemical Romance had more screamo vocals. In fact, I am certain that MCR was their main inspiration because I can hear references to songs like This Is How I Disappear and Helena (and if those arenāt references then the coincidence is absolutely crazy). The instrumental is very reminiscent of the Black Parade album as well, so basically⦠if you like MCR and screamo vocals, youāll like this album.
It really is true what they say about misgendering becoming funnier over time
Like Iāve stopped correcting my family because, no joke, my MAGA-pilled transphobic cis brother admitted to my mother in private that I have more hair and generally appear manlier than he does, and he not only genders me correctly because of it, he gets upset when others get it wrong. Which means
The men in my family are actively comparing themselves to me and losing in their heads
Any implications that Iām not a man also insults them by proxy since it implies theyāre somehow even less of a man than that
So when a relative calls me āyoung ladyā or āmissyā they also call every insecure conservative white man in the room ābabygirlā and Iām immediately grabbing a bucket of popcorn to watch the fallout
