Due to its geographical position on the south of the Volga river and proximity to the Caspian sea, along with the top down political decisions Astrakhan experienced bottom up cultural influences of the indian, iranian and persian merchants who brought their typical building typologies with them.

Balancing Astrakhan

Astrakhan can be seen as an play with several actors involved. The most prominent are: Nature, Authorities, Money and Inhabitants. The tight balance between their influences forms the face of the city today. Astrakhan now represents a heterogenious constellations of random sites where one of the actors managed to take the space over.
