Pad Thai in Bangkok
We were on our way to do some press for Captain America: Civil War in Bangkok here this morning when my translator suddenly asked, “What do you want for lunch today?”
Not sure how to answer as that’s a pretty broad question, especially in Thailand, I inquired as to what my options were.
“I’m having Pad Thai!”, he happily informed me.
“Cool, I’ll have the same.”, I replied, which got a big smile.
Done deal.
And at around 12:30, my lunch arrived…
A lovely plate of Pad Thai!
Shrimp with the heads and skins on, raw sprouts, lime, crushed peanuts, chile powder and sugar… it was all there.
I dug into my noodles and started enjoying this wonderful lunch dish…
But then I looked over at what my translator was eating, which was not the same as mine…
“I thought you were having Pad Thai?”, I wondered aloud.
“This is Pad Thai.”, he matter-of-factly explained.
“Yeah, but it doesn’t look the same as mine.”, I shot back.
“It’s not.”, he deadpanned.
He then explained to me that as I was a guest, they got me a plate of fancy Pad Thai, which cost about three dollars. Him and his colleagues went out for more affordable Pad Thai from a street vendor that cost a buck.
So I asked him if I could try his.
Guess whose Pad Thai better?!
