The gardens are buzzing with activity all over! The hummingbirds are loving all of the zinnias and will often perch among the sweet pea trellis. The weather has finally starting turning in the right direction with temps in the 20s next week! I’m very much looking forward to the sweet peas again this year! The smell is amazing and they’re just an absolutely beautiful and timeless flower. My sweet peas sprouted last weekend in the greenhouse and I got that butterfly-in-the-stomach excitement feeling about the promise to come. These two portraits are pastel sunset heirloom sweet peas. Each day that passes becomes more and more exciting as the weather is slowly warming, days are getting noticeably longer, morning birdsong is abundant and the amount of seedlings overtaking my living room is becoming a bit much - though I keep planting and every morning is something new. Nasturtiums greeted me and my morning coffee today, popping up through the darkness and taking their first big stretch towards the light. I cannot wait to see how well they’ll do this year. We’ve started 17 varieties of nasturtium this year with more likely to come. Some are trailing or vining types and some are compact and more contained. The flowers and leaves are edible and look stunning atop a salad of leafy greens, a garnish for a dessert or ice cream and beautiful frozen into an ice cube plunged in a white wine spritzer. Look for some of these plants at our upcoming plant sale in the Kawartha Lakes and possibly a pop-up location in Toronto. More details to follow as they become available. We also plan to have seeds available online at our website this fall/winter after our trials. When its as cold as it has been this past week, this is what I look forward to coming home to. I won't lie, space is becoming a bit of a concern and I've already arranged a baby sitter (thanks mom!) for 3 flats of geranium babies. So many more seeds need to get started! I feel as if I'm falling behind, yet deep down I believe everything will work out just fine! We're planning our plant sale for the May long weekend in the Kawartha Lakes and currently considering something in Toronto as well at a different date. Details and logistics are being worked out and considered. Look forward to veggie and flower starts, herbs, gifts and more. This is going to be an exciting year ahead! mimosa pudica - more commonly known as 'sensitive plant'. It is a curious little plant (grown as a houseplant in our climate), in that it's leaves fold-in and collapse when touched and will reopen minutes later.
