i alluded to making this post in my previous odette drawing, and after a few days of work: I AM HERE TO PRESENT MY SNOW ELF AND FALMER DESIGNS IN QUITE A LONG POSTš
i want to first make note: a few of my choices are not accurate to reality and actual physiological climatic adaptations. some of these were aesthetic choices, and my justification for them is that this is a race of fantasy elves who probably also have some kind of natural, magical resistance to the cold. ć( ā, ā )ć
Their heat is kept internally. This means their blood vessels are naturally quite constricted, making their skin cold to the touch but everything internally VERY warm. It helps when they're in very cold environments, as it doesn't feel as extreme!
-> related: their pinkened cheeks and noses are still from their faces warming and the blood vessels dilating, they just have a lower threshold of what is considered 'warm' for them.
Skin tones aren't exactly stark white. They tend to have slightly blue to purple toned skin, since it reflects light the same way snow does--think the colour of shadows in snowy landscapes! there's not a lot of variation in my examples here, mainly because of my painting process for them with watercolours, as i build up opacity and a lot of different layers and other tones. and i dont know how to translate that into digital colour palettes, but i basically use one of these as the base and add layers to build up the colour
Their eyes are adapted to seeing very well in bright conditions (meaning: no snow blindness or transitional squinting when going from indoors to brightly lit outdoors). This comes with the adverse effect of night blindness/very poor dark vision.
-> related: long eyelashes and monolids + epicanthic folds
-> eye colours range from white/grey, very light blue, purple (dark and light), red/pink (yes i know light eye colours tend to see worse in bright conditions, and better in dark conditions)
Narrow noses with slightly flatter nosebridges
Ears are downturned and covered in fluff to keep them warm. They're also incredibly sensitive to sound, and are able to hear even the quietest of animals. (i thought i had a specific drawing of this but i. don't. you'll see what i mean later, though!)
Important things to note right off the bat!
My Snow Elves have long legs and short torsos, this is to help them traverse through tall snowdrifts
They either have plantigrade or half-digitigrade legs (which i'm not great at drawing), BOTH with paws/toe beans and both covered in the same downy fluff(fur?) as their ears, up the entire leg. i kinda drew them...bald there. honestly just imagine those toes bigger as well, i made them a lil teeny
-> related: they have wide feet/paws to disperse their weight on ice/harder packed snowbanks to not fall through. sort of like snow shoes.
They have wide/broad ribcages
They have long tails with a long hair tuft at the end. This tuft brushes the ground, sweeping side to side as they walk to cover their tracks. It also helps with balance.
They generally tend to have thicker, longer body hair, though it thins during the summer months. Hair type is most commonly wavy, but ranges between 1B - 2B
This is a sketch/concept art of what the average Snow Elf in my design looks like:
The Falmer aren't too different from the Snow Elves!
They still have internal heat, and are cold to the touch.
Their skin still reflects light, giving blue to purple hues of the skin, with the addition of more pink/warm tones.
They still have thin lips
They still have very sensitive ears/hearing
They still have a wide/broad ribcage
They still have long legs and short torsos
They still have a long tail with a tuft at the end
But! There are a few key differences:
They are now fully digitigrade, and no longer have paws/toe beans but regular toes.
Their hair is very sparse and thin, including their tail tuft. Hair also doesn't grow very long.
Now this is where we get into the fun part! Instead of the completely nonexistent noses in the game, mine have what is called a nose-leaf!
They have very limited vision, their eyes now very small or, in some cases, seemingly no eyes at all (because they are so small, they're completely covered by a layer of skin. they're still there, of course! but they can't exactly see out of them). Those just with small eyes can mainly see changes in light and things with high enough contrast, though still blurry.
Because of this, they use echolocation (or perhaps even a form of tonal magic!) to get around. This is where the nose-leaf comes in--they're used to modify and direct sound during echolocation! (if you're interested in learning more about it: here's a link to the nose-leaf wikipedia page. super interesting!!) They also have long, wide ears.
And finally, here is a sketch/concept art of what the average Falmer in my design looks like:
looking at it now, the tail is a bit long...
NOW, you might have noticed the tattoos on both of them. BUT I HAVE TOO MANY PHOTOS ALREADY AND THIS POST WOULD BE FAR TOO LONG--i mean, i haven't even gotten to clothing (a project i've been working on for over a year already) or art motifs or jewellery or beauty standards....!! there's so much i could talk about with my dear snelves and falmer, and maybe i'll do a part 2! but we'll end things here for now :>
thank you for reading, if you made it this far. i put a lot of thought into their designs and had a lot of fun researching for them :)
