Full Fat Dairy
I recently bought a pair of ivory sheets from Quince - the kind of creamy ivory that reflects warm buttery hues at the creases and folds. The color itself isn't far off from pure white, but the effect is entirely different. This color feels bright, optimistic, natural but in an indulgent way. After making my new bed and rediscovering my love for this shade, I began noticing it more and more on runways as fashion month continued to unfold. A chicken-or-egg situation, I'm not quite sure if the new sheets have led to me noticing this more or if, in true trickledown luxury fashion, my choice of bedsheets was motivated by unconscious influence already predetermined by "the market."
The colors of creamy ivory and butter yellow are so rich an evocative - I find it hard to articulate why I find them so pleasing to the eye, but I'm clearly not alone in my love for them. I also think it's no coincidence that many runways are utilizing these shades in the midst of the global rise of carnivore barnyard trad milkmaid conservatism. This is full fat dairy, colostrum, cultured butter, clotted cream, homemade ice cream. Nara Smith's impact... (just kidding, of course).
Fashion influencer and trend forecaster Mandy Lee recently noted in an instagram reel that the rise of fur (either real fur or faux fur that looks real) and hair in runway collections is similarly tied to conservative rejection of animal welfare movements and reflects continued valorization of the "old money" aesthetic. I disagree with her on some points - the Dilara-esque use of long human hair feels more sexual and closer to hippie free love rejection of conservative values. The conservative women I know do everything in their power to appear as hairless as possible, besides their voluminous dyson airwrapped hair and tinted brows. Though these women would certainly wear a fur coat at the ski lodge and would certainly be skeptical of vaccinating their kids and would certainly pick up a fresh gallon of raw milk at the farmers market. In some ways, contemporary anti-establishment hippie sentiments are actually most represented by the MAGA/MAHA mommy bloggers du jour. Speaking of barnyard wellness, what's that thing about horseshoes?
Butter yellow smeared across Givenchy, Off-White, Stella McCartney, Tom Ford. Cowboy belts at Schiaparelli and cowboy hats at DSquared2. Fur fur fur at Chloé, Rabanne, Acne Studios, Fendi, Simone Rocha. We are on the homestead, whether you like it or not.
So, are these freshly-churned hues signaling the rise of fascism? Maybe. I'm gonna forget about that and eat a bowl of organic french vanilla ice cream instead.
