My large A.L.I.C.E. pack with MOLLE II shoulder straps and kidney pad.
My brother in law gave me a large ALICE pack with the frame.
I have no idea how to use it, but I totally want to make a bug out bag out of it.
Read my blog! It has all the instructions you need.
The ALICE pack has its charms but there are some drawbacks as well.
PROS:
Makes you look like a disillusioned soldier back from Vietnam to spread buddhism and peace.
The pockets (inside and out) are handy and spacious.
Cost me $50.
Frame keeps the pack off yer back so you don’t sweat as badly.
Easy to strap things to.
CONS:
Weighs 4 lbs. by itself… the frame is steel.
It’s annoying to undo all of the fasteners to get your stuff out.
Needs modifications to the waist belt to hold water, camera, knife, whatever.
NO HANDLE ON TOP!?!?!?! WTF
Shoulder straps are sufficiently padded but very stiff and square - uncomfortable.
All in all pretty good but I’m probably gonna invest in a better pack when I’ve been on the road for a while. Still a good “first pack”
Regarding your list of CONS:
1. Man up. 4lbs is nothing. Just pack lightly.
2. Try modifications. There are a million ways to modernize the ALICE pack and it’s fun to DIY.
3. Who needs a handle when you can grab the ALICE pack by the steel frame?
4. Yeah, the shoulder straps suck but you can easily exchange them with modern versions!
Dads old alice pack. Meet your new tactical tailor frame, straps and kidney pad.
Tactical Tailor is a sin.

I have a large Alice pack and it’s so fucking ridiculously big. It’s somewhat justified since my I have my accordion plus winter gear, but it would be so much better to get a small Alice and a sweet little cajun squeeze box instead… Summer goals I guess.
You should get all the ALICE packs you can get your hands on.
