me: The cinematography in Carol (2015) dir. Todd Haynes is striking in that it contributes to a very rare simultaneous sense of hyper realism and hyper stylization. The 16mm film not only serves to enhance the viewer's understanding of the time period, but embodies something romanic in the softness of its grain, the film's lighting, its color pallet, that evokes the feeling of floating or drifting throughout the film, and though not everything is always aesthetically pretty, it is always beautiful because the cinematography is utilized to capture the sensation of falling in love, not only its pleasantness, but also its anxieties and uncertainties. Though the light is almost always naturalistic, it is often distorted through diegetic means, windows, rain, mirrors, emphasizing what separates Carol and Therese from the world they inhabit. The film also makes generous use of framing within diegetic frames, and the effect is not voyeuristic, but rather both intimate and isolating. The movie represents some of Ed Lachman, A.S.C.'s best cinematography to date and establishes him as a master of the craft.
