Jenny laughed and shook her head in response. “I have no idea. Maybe I paid for the fast delivery. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve done that on accident.” She muttered, thinking about all the times Jenny had done it for car parts she couldn’t steal from someone else. “Of it could just be some sort of miracle.”
As Dex went on to explain some of the things she’d some across in fixing the place up, Jenny nodded and started walking around the bar. “Good, good. I’m glad it hasn’t been too difficult. I was afraid things were going to be a lot worse, especially on my bank account.”
When the other woman said that it was possible to get things done by the weekend, Jenny couldn’t help but grin widely. “Excellent! And if you need an extra set of hands to get things in place before then, let me know. I haven’t been that busy and could use a distraction.”
“For the booths, probably a good idea, and the bathrooms might need another look. Do you- uh, have everything lined up to start stocking stuff? I mean, I can make sure the shelves and stuff are shipshape so you can get that going while the tables are going in,” She was getting the feeling that Jenny wanted to get the place open for business, which made sense, there were probably bills to pay.
“I was also going to ask,” She hesitated, fidgeting with the rag she’d been using on the ceiling, part of her mind running through the schedule- if she was able to get the first layer of paint on before she left that day, she’d be able to finish it up the following morning. It was going to work out just fine, but once the place was finished, she was going to be out of a job again.
“I mean- do you have people lined up already to work here?” Sure, she’d been keeping an eye out for other work she could get, probably work she’d have more qualifications for. Dex didn’t exactly have a lot of kitchen, waitressing, or bartending experience, but she told herself that she was a fast learner. Besides, if she could get a steady paycheck of one kind or another, she’d be able to go to school for something like mechanics, she’d always rather enjoyed working on cars and the like. Handy-man work was good and all, but there wasn’t a lot of it in the market.

Jenny felt kind of bad for not having visited the Peach sooner, but she’d been busy doing some things for Fortis and trying to track down Hunters. A part of her felt like not being more active in reopening the Peach sooner was a let-down for Porter. He’d put so much time and effort into this place and Jenny just hadn’t had the time or patience yet. Hopefully, when the place got back up and running, she’d feel more obligation about coming in.
When she walked through the door and took a look around, Jenny couldn’t find Dex anywhere. Until she greeted her. “Oh, hi. I, uhh, hope I’m not interrupting.” She glanced around again a smiled a bit. “Though the place is coming along nicely.” When Dex mentioned the plumber coming by and taking care of everything, Jenny nodded and smiled even wider. “Perfect! Do you think we’ll be ready for the booths to get put in this weekend? I know I said that they wouldn’t be here for a few weeks, but I guess I ordered them sooner than I thought and the shipping was a little faster than I’d anticipated.”
With any luck, they could get things finished up by Saturday and reopen that night. Maybe they could have a sort of anti-registration party with half price drinks, but hat might have been hoping for too much. It looked like the counter still needed to be put in and the walls repainted, in addition to the new seats getting put in. “And no, I didn’t know that. What kind did we have?”
Dex made an indelicate snorting noise, clambering down from the ladder- “When has that ever happened? Shipping being faster. World’s coming to an end.” She pulled the mask down around her neck and and stood with the rag still in her hands, looking around the room. It had made good progress, and she was happy with that-
“A lotta’ dry smoke residue. Other stuff too though- we’re lucky it’s been dry. Shit gets wet, it’d be impossible to scrub out. Good thing we’re resurfacing most of this though,” She looked around the room, hand on her hip, considering the other question. Could they put the booths in that weekend? It gave her three days to get the floors in descent shape, which wasn’t impossible.
“...Maybe. Pretty likely.” She chewed on her bottom lip, and then nodded- “If you wanna get those in, I’ll make sure the place is ready.” She could do it- it wasn’t like there was anything else keeping her busy at the moment anyways.

The work was good, solid, something for her to get up and do every day, and it was even somewhat fun, sweeping, scrubbing, taking out bad framing and lining up more, the whole routine and work was making her feel almost human again. After assessing what needed to be done for the plumbing, she’d contacted Jenny to let her know that yes, a professional was probably a good idea, since it was better safe than sorry on these things, especially in a public establishment. It was a little strange, not having Jenny check in sooner, so it was some level of relief when she finally did see her walk through the door (which she had gone through the process of replacing just the day before, though it didn’t have a handle yet). She was in the middle of cleaning a bit of the ceiling, balanced on her back on a ladder, bent over backwards with her feet tucked into the lower rungs. From this position, she was able to bend just slightly more to see the woman walking in-
“Oh! Hey!” She said, grinning from behind a dust mask- it mostly showed in her eyes, but there seemed to be a difference in her disposition as well. She’d hung around the city for a week, getting back into the swing of living with people around, becoming somewhat less paranoid about being found out since she was remembering how unobservant most people were. If she got nervous in a crowd and started smelling like a house fire, well, no one really questioned it.
“Your plumber guy came by, fixed some stuff, kind of flooded the bathroom for a little while, but he fixed that too.” She said, her ball-cap falling off, letting her fire-engine red hair flop loose. “Did you know there’s several kinds of smoke residue? I was doing some reading a few days ago, had to figure out where to start after I just swept everything, y’know.”

She raised an eyebrow at Dex, still not completely convinced that she could do it herself. But Jenny wasn’t going to take the chance away from her. Maybe she’d do a far better job than Jenny thought. It was at least worth a few days to see what Dex could do.
“Right. Well, if you need anything like I said, don’t hesitate to let me know.” When Dex asked about calling Jenny, she looked confused for a moment before nodding. “Yum, well I figured you’d have a cell phone, but I think there’s a payphone down the street if you have change.” She hesitated a moment, brows furrowing together. “Though I’m not sure if it works.”
“Anyway, I’ll be back in a few days or on Friday to see how things are going. I’d like to reopen before Thanksgiving, so that’s still about two months away. Maybe a little longer. I think that should be plenty of time. If it’s not done by then, we’ll definitely need to get it open again by Christmas at the latest. I know tons of people who have been asking about the holiday deals and stuff that the previous owner had.”
“I dropped it in the toilet last week- if the payphone doesn’t work, there’s probably a corner store or something. I can just- er, use that phone.” She hadn’t had a cell phone in a while, it hadn’t occured to her that she might need one. For goodness sakes, she didn’t even have a landline that she could give Jenny. Dex took a glance around the building, nodding-
“We might be able to make Thanksgiving. Do you have orders in for tables and stuff? And- uh, hows the plumbing? I’m not certified or anything, but I can do some work on minor stuff,” She was trying to figure out just how much was needed to be done. It was going to be more than just some sweeping and a bit of wiping down here and there, though the building must have been structurally sound if they’d left it up, which meant she probably didn’t need to do any major construction, which was a relief.

sonokinetic:
There was definitely something wilder about Dex now. Not that she’d ever really been one Katherine would describe as tame, but nonetheless. The slight resistance, the near breaking of contact, led Katherine to think what she tended to think about most of her old friends- something had happened, something dark. This was still the girl who landed them in the principal’s office an ungodly amount of times, but more… survivalist.
“You know,” Katherine started, on instinct wanting to reach out and wipe Dex’s tears, a thing that had most definitely happened when they were younger. The only thing that stopped her was that adults weren’t very… affectionate here. Katherine reached up to pat Dex’s hand for a moment, then dropped her hands in front of her stomach, fingers laced. “Words are hard.”
Katherine couldn’t help but continue nodding, “I mean, it’s one of those cosmic things…” She said with a laugh, “Both were in Chicago then we both ended up here, today.” She put both her hands to her face, hoping that it would cool some of the heat in her cheeks, but probably not. Most definitely not.
“God, I’ve got to ask, I know its cliche, lazy, lame, feel free to stop me at any point but- where’ve you been?” Katherine asked, trying to ignore the slight crack in her voice at the end of her question. “I… Dex can I get a hug, I know we haven’t seen one another in literal years but, god, god, I’ve missed you too.”
When she calmed down- or at least, managed to make her mind some semblance of calm, rather than the back and forth chaos, she was able to look at Kat, really look at her. She was amazed at how right it felt to be there with her, how something just clicked in her chest and she wanted to burst into tears like a little child being told that it was going to be alright.
She wasn’t crying. She so wasn’t crying still, she just had something in her eye. Like sadness and a few years of repressed need for a connection to the outside world, to another person- she pulled Kat into a tight hug, pressing her face against her shoulder and letting out a sound that was part sobbing and part laughter-
“Where have I been? Where have you been- oh my god, Kat,” It was hardly a question, she wouldn’t really ask where Kat had been since she didn’t want to tell what she herself had been doing. How did you tell an old girlfriend- not really an ex, but someone she’d known before, how did you easily tell her that you’d been living the life of a raccoon? Hiding in the forest, scavenging around in the dump. Avoiding people, avoiding life, and now she was trying to do something? Do what? What was she doing here?
“I mean- I dunno, I’ve been around. Here and there. Well, more there then here,” She’d pulled away again by this point, gesturing awkwardly with her hands. She wasn’t entirely sure what she felt now, that the initial burst of joy at seeing her old friend was fading. Mostly she was just glad that she’d been able to shower the day before, and that her clothes were clean, more or less.

Jenny eyed her for a moment, trying to decide whether or not to let her work on the place if she didn’t have much experience. But the girl looked like she could handle herself and if it came down to needing more experience, Jenny could always hire an extra hand to help with the things Dex couldn’t do. Besides, with someone that was more experience, it was going to cost a lot more money.
“Okay.” At the question, Jenny frown slightly and let out a sigh. “A fire. I don’t really know what caused it, but the owner either died or disappeared. No one knows for sure.” Jenny wasn’t going to mention that she knew him personally. That was a conversation for another day if it even needed to happen at all.
“If there’s something you need help with when it comes to the more major construction, let me know and I’ll hire someone. Otherwise, have at it.” She pulled a piece of paper out of her bag and scribble her cell number on it before handing it to Dex. “That’s my cell if you need anything.”
Dex forced a smile that she hoped looked encouraging- sure, she was capable, she could handle fixing a burnt out pub. Especially if it payed. She nodded absently, listening to the short explanation- paranoia was sending up all sorts of red flags, dead or missing owner, fire, but she had to tell herself. Paranoia was always sending up red flags, that was why it was called paranoia.
“Great, yeah, I- uh, I should be able to handle this. I mean. You know. Got a hammer, got a broom. Yup.” She rocked on her heels, shoving her hands in her pockets for the moment before reaching out to take the paper.
“Is there a phone line in here, or- I mean, it shouldn’t be a problem, I’ll be fine.” Sure, she wasn’t sure where to start, but she could start somewhere. “You’ll be back later? Or- uh, no?” She wanted to know if she should expect her back, giving her a deadline to make some progress.
Old Sparks|| Kat&Dex||V9 W1|| Monday Afternoon
Katherine was being sent to go do… what was essentially intern-level errands. She wasn’t upset, but she knew it was one of those things that she was assigned specifically to be off campus. Not that she minded being out in the throngs of people- it was the principal of the thing. Yes, she probably shouldn’t have been snooping around, but that’s what she did. That’s what she’d always done, and even the dead version of her did the same thing.
She walked down the sidewalk, barely paying attention to anything long enough to remember where she had been or was going. Then there was something bright red and familiar out of the corner of her eye- someone, more specifically- calling out her name. It took her about four steps to come out of the initial shock that she was being addressed, and about 10 seconds to comprehend she knew this person.
Now, Alice Dexter, red hair a mess, shouting at her with a can of pears, and the unmistakable aura of homelessness was calling out to her. A blast from the past before all hell broke loose, and easily the least expected sight for sore eyes she’d seen since she’d crossed over. Still in a daze she approached her former friend- lover?- and couldn’t really help herself from patting the other girls upper arms, feeling the shock in the slack of her mouth and tension in her eyebrows. “Dex? Dex? Shit- Alice Dexter White, what the hell?” Kat said, not sure what the laugh building at the back of her throat was, but she was damn sure joy had to do with it.
There seemed to be a million things rushing through her at once as she jumped down from the ledge to stand with Kat, actually leaving her bag for the moment. Apprehension- what if Kat didn’t remember her? What if she’d rather have left that time behind her, didn’t want to remember her? And then there was the fear, the usual one that was lurking in the back of her mind. Could she trust her? Of course not, not at once like this, the enemy could be anyone, they could be anywhere.
But that was crazy talk. Paranoia speaking, because just because you couldn’t see the invisible monster about to drag you under, didn’t mean there wasn’t one. And when Kat remembered her- for goodness sakes, she was crying. Not really crying because the tears hadn’t left her eyes, but seeing a friendly face seemed to be monumental, it felt like something that would never happen. Even with this, she stiffened a little at Kats touch, barely resisting the urge to step back out of reflex- it wasn’t the fact that she didn’t trust her, though sure, maybe she didn’t entirely. It was just that she hadn’t really...well, she hadn’t talked to anyone for a while. She hadn’t had a friendly interaction in just as long, parts of her were trying to remember how she should react
“Katherine Randall, you’ve always had a way with words,” Her quip would have been more of the teasing nature she was accustomed to if it weren’t for the fact that her voice was shaking a little. She had to swipe at her eyes with her sleeve to keep the tears from falling, and she reached out for a moment, as if she was going to touch the others face, but let her hand fall to Kat’s shoulder instead in a fast, light pat, before her hands returned to her pockets.
“God am I happy to see you though- I-I mean, I wasn’t expecting to see you or anything, but, wow- just- oh my god.” She had to rub at her eyes again, and she let out another laugh, trying to calm down before her ears caught on fire- hopefully not literally, but she could feel herself blushing as red as her hair.
Headcanon #3
Something Dex missed dearly when she was living alone but didn’t realize she was missing until she heard it again was music. One of the first things she heard when she got into the city, behind the sound of all the people, the cars, she heard a saxophone playing and for a moment her heart melted a little and she thought that maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea. Of course, next she had to clear out because the pickup truck she’d hitched a ride in didn’t know she’d been there, and the driver hadn’t taken kindly to seeing a stranger climb out the back of his truck, and she didn’t get a chance to listen more at the time, but aside from the basics, Dex’s goals have been to find more areas where she can just sit and listen to music.
Fuzzy Peach | Jenny&Dex | V9 W1 | Wednesday Morning
Even though Jenny had finished the paperwork over the summer, she’d only visited the pub once or twice over the past few months. The place was a disaster still and she tried to clean it up a bit, throwing out some of the more damaged wood and picking up debris. But all her efforts had still gone nowhere. Between working at Fortis now and keeping her garage up, even though Jenny now had a partner to help with that, things were still keeping her busy. So she decided to put out a flyer.
When Jenny hadn’t really expected was for someone to actually show up. The sound of someone’s voice made her peak out from behind a well-burnt pillar. “Hey!” She was half surprised and her tone clearly said. “Umm, you’re here for the job, right?” Of course they were. “I’m Jenny, the new owner. I used to know the previous one.” Jenny stepped over a pile of ash and held her hand out for her.
“So far you’re the only person to show up. Do you have an experience in stuff like this? If not, that’s okay, I can hire more help. I probably need it, honestly.” She smiled small at her. “And when can you start?”
Dex looked at the offered hand for a second, as if the woman was holding something completely unfamiliar to her. After a brief pause, she shook it and forced a polite smile, her nerves jacking her temperature up until she felt somewhat feverish, which wasn’t entirely unusual for her.
“Yeah, little experience.” It wasn’t really a lie, she’d done some work on the old place she’d found. Most of the work had been hauling supplies out of the junk yard all the way back, but she’d patched some holes and added a tarp.
“I- er, I can learn pretty fast though.” She looked around at the building, hands back in her pockets, “My schedule’s clear, but, I gotta ask. What happened here?” It looked like it had suffered some fire damage- something about her helping fix it up felt somewhat ironic.
Headcanon #2
Alice is super paranoid. She tries to keep a lid on it most of the time, but if she had a phone/if she gets one in the future, she’d probably consistently answer with “Who is this and how did you get this number”
Fuzzy Peach | Jenny&Dex | V9 W1 | Wednesday Morning
@invisichick
Dex stood outside the building, which was obviously still in a state of disrepair, and shrugged one shoulder as she stared at it, trying to steel herself to actually go in, rather than just lurking. It felt like her body was trying to talk her out of going- look, it said, your shoulder hurts, remember when you pulled it out of working last winter? It’s hurting again. You should just go take a nap under a tree. And it was true, her shoulder ached, it had been doing that pretty much every morning she’d woken up one place or another in this city. She was blaming the concrete, but it was partially because she was nervous.
She had to ask herself though, why was she nervous? There was no good reason. This person didn’t seek her out, therefore they would know nothing about her. For gods sakes, she was helping renovate a pub named the Fuzzy Peach, it was hardly sinister. With this in mind, she forced herself forward and opened the door, knocking on the frame lightly.
“Hello? I- uh, saw your flyer. So, I’m here.” She fidgeted with the straps on her backpack, wondering if she would be the only one showing up. She wasn’t really sure what to expect, but if the work paid, she’d be happy enough.
Headcanon 1
When Dex was hermit-ing in the woods, she found an abandoned cabin about a month before her first winter. The roof was pretty much gone and everything on the surface was ruined, but the floor was mostly sound, and there was a box of books that survived, along with a handful of other things that I’ll think of/post about later when I’m not 2 minutes from having to leave for work and still not out of my pj’s

Dex was comfortable on her perch at the top of a staircase, on a wide, flat bit of the railing with her back against the wall. It was at the entrance to some, large building, a library or something. She didn’t particularly care, much like she didn’t care that her pants had at least three different patches, or that even after cutting her own hair for four years, she wasn’t getting any better at it. It stuck out so much that the unevenness didn’t really show, except for the bit that was just long enough at the side to start curling, unlike the rest of it. What she cared most about at the moment was the can of pears that she’d been saving for the last of her rations and she was glad she had saved them- they were delicious. For the future, she was only slightly ashamed of her excitement over the selection of dumpsters that New York had to offer, but her largest concern was finding a decent place to sleep.
That was a worry for later though. For the moment, she was content watching faces go by around her, ones that were almost familiar popping out at her here and there, as if her mind was starved for some kind of contact. It would explain her almost instantaneous reaction when she actually did see someone she recognized, leaping up and waving the hand holding the can of pears still as she shouted out-
“Kat! Hey!” And then she froze. Why? What was she going to do? ‘Hi, remember me? We went to high school together but I dropped out to become a raccoon!’
