I still remember how excited I was to tell my sisters that Miles Morales - that Spider-Man - was half Puerto Rican. When I was growing up in the 2000s characters who were Puerto Rican, half or otherwise, were few and far between. I latched onto any latino character even if their food and music were different from mine. They were closer than anything else could be. When Across The Spiderverse came out I saw my culture's food on screen, foods I love animated as beautifully as Ghibli ramen. I hadn't realized what I was missing. Is this the way some of you feel all the time?

When I was a kid I watched Princess Bride and saw a Jewish man play a Spanish character and I immersed myself in his quest for revenge. He was and always will be one of my favorite characters of all time. Though he and I were so different, I still felt closer to him than so many other characters in the fantasy movies I watched. When Our Flag Means Death started airing, I saw a Puerto Rican who was neither a man or a woman. They talked like me, held themself like me, looked like me. They were out for revenge. I had seen a lot of quests for revenge since Princess Bride, across all shades and both binary genders. But this time it was someone exactly like me, no concessions on country of origin or gender, fighting and laughing and falling in love. I had never, ever seen that before. Is this the way some of you feel all the time?

I saw my history on stage. I saw cinderblocks, sugar cane and piraguas. I saw an old woman from the same city that my dad's family has lived in for as long as there are records to track it. I heard music I grew up with played for the whole country. I saw a man who is the first queer person I remember ever learning of, Ricky Martin, get to sing in Spanish for that audience with pride. I saw a kid asleep on chairs at a wedding. I feel bad that some of you will never feel this way. I feel sorry for you, that you'll never feel this way. Never feel this love because you see it and are scared. How could you be scared of this? How could you be scared of something so beautiful?

I am so sorry that so many of you will never feel this way.
