Cale and Heni!Rok Soo are meant to be (platonically).
Cale, who usually uses others for his own 'benefit' and tends to push them away at first—not wanting to engage in chitchat/small talk or whatsoever because he's either not interested or deems it useless (and also because he was still closed-off back then), wanted to chat more with Heni!Rok Soo in their first meeting, but because of the circumstances at that time he couldn't get to.
Meaning he wanted to know more about him when there's no real benefit or gain in doing so. He didn't need to tell that to Heni!Rok Soo when he could've simply kept quiet as usual, but he did so anyway just as how he further reassured him that the Henituse family was doing well. He wants to learn more about him not because he needs to, but because he just wants to.
I need them to meet again and work together, PLEASE!!!
(Imagine the chaos and destruction they'd cook up together.)
I had a fun thought.
Original Cale doesn't know that krsCale became the commander. So what if when he meets with the TCF cast, he calls Choi Han Commander?
Alberu: "Where were you?"
OgCale: "With the commander."
Alberu: "Huh? But Cale was with me???"
OgCale: "Huh? Isn't Choi Han the commander?"
Alberu: “Huh?? Since when??”
OgCale: “Huh??? Since always??”
Alberu: "HUH??"
Henirokso: "Huh????"
Cale: passing by "Why are you both yelling 'huh'? Did you lose your ability to form words?"
OgCale: implying he was an ordinary soldier
Me:
Ohh~! Definitely!!! The person who fooled the ENTIRE KINGDOM as a kid and made them think he was "useless" can NEVER lie again! That's unimaginable!!!
• You're ordinary despite having survived Choi Han's beating who can easily break walls.
• You're ordinary despite surviving the Henituse war which "probably" killed everyone else.
• You're ordinary despite being one of the last survivors of the two-decade-long war.
• You're ordinary despite joining the last battle which had the strongest individuals.
• You're ordinary despite being near where Choi Han and White Star were fighting— which has to be the front line.
• You're ordinary despite GoD choosing you for the transmigration.
• You're ordinary despite managing to do KRS's work properly which no one else can do.
• You're ordinary despite being a THAMES!!!
Oh, and like someone once mentioned: why didn't ARM bother to kill you later?!
They had all that free time hunting down Ron and Beacrox after destroying the Molan household, right? So what possibly could have stopped them from offing you while you were actively fighting in the war? Hmm?
Oh wait— your flaming red hair, sooooo eye-catching, sooo similar to their dear lord's— surely impossible to miss! Surely.
So how in the world did you survive so long, hmm, dear Roksoo?
Could it be… they tried?
And couldn't do a single thing to you?
And why would that be?
Hmm.
Please, kindly inform us, my dear ordinary soldier who survived on pure luck for TWENTY YEARS! We're dying to know.
Could you please tell me about ogCale's personality? I want to understand him from your perspective.
I would love to! Happy to be of service.
First of all, one important thing to note: a lot of things you might have come across about OG Cale on places like tumblr or AO3? Most of it, it's fan speculation. The character had exactly ONE canon appearance, aside from a few rare flashbacks from other characters' POVs and KRS!Cale's recollections of "The Birth of a Hero" series.
So, I think it's best to break it down one-by-one.
First chapters of the book, we see how people react to the "new" Cale. They specifically notice the things Cale ISN'T doing, such as: throwing bottles (with "terrible aim", which could either be true or staged, but I personally suspect the former), breaking things (which his father always had to replace with new stuff, so OG Cale was actually doing people a service with that), complaining about food (fans made lots of speculation about it, but the exact reasoning for that one is unclear), being rude to servants (probably to make them gossip about what an awful heir OG Cale would make), and terrorizing local gangsters (instead of harassing the poor or beautiful women, like a real trash would). This creates a pretty solid image of what OG Cale was "usually" like.
So, his MO is acting like a spoiled, bratty noble. The drinking only began when he was 15, so he had to act full 7 years without the excuse of being "drunk", so he mostly depended on being rude, rash, and others not asking any probing questions about it. They probably all thought the trauma of losing his mother affected him this way, and did not want to trigger him by mentioning it. After all, according to Cale, "it was basically taboo to talk about the late countess in the house".
But there are other, more subtle hints: how Basen is shocked that Cale smiled about food – meaning he did not smile a lot, at least not happily. He was likely used to wearing an unhappy expression around his family, or maybe being sarcastic. Deruth's expectation that Cale would be unhappy about delicious food, so him being grumpy was also a regular thing. It is also strongly implied that OG Cale also avoided family meals, but participated in them from time to time regardless, due to his father's request (because otherwise Basen would have no expectations of Cale's behavior at meal times; not enough to drop a fork in shock at his smile, at least). In TBOAH, Cale remembers that OG Cale supposedly "only listened to his father, and only liked Ron among his servants and saw him as a father figure". He also avoided interacting with Violan and her children. So we have a clear image of awkward, yet somehow still respectful relationships of OG Cale with exactly 5 people. Yet even those 5 never suspected the extent of OG Cale's mask… they all assumed that he was so hurt by the past, he was lashing out in the present. And to be perfectly fair to them – Cale was just a kid at first, and then a teenager. Occam's Razor reasoning would bring anyone to that conclusion unless they had any evidence to the contrary. Which OG Cale made sure not to leave behind, because he wasn't honest around anyone; not even Ron.
Another thing? Rosalyn remembers hearing gossip about Cale Henituse in the Breck Kingdom – a FOREIGN NOBLE. His antics were so "scandalous" it even reached the ears of foreign royalty! In other words, OG Cale knew how to draw exactly the type of attention he wanted. And yet, no one knew his actual, real personality. Even Alberu Crossman's spy network did not manage to find anything fishy about OG Cale before the transmigration. Nor did the literal undercover assassin by his side... That's how insanely good his acting skills were.
There is little on his personality before, but we see some glimpses. Early on in the series, Ron remembers OG Cale hugging Deruth after Jour's death, in contrast to his later "trashy" behavior (which started when he was eight years old). From this, we can conclude two things: first, OG Cale was compassionate as a child, at least to his own family. Second, his "trashy act" was not how he had always behaved. We have no specific scenes to confirm if he was a sweet kid, or a cheerful kid, or if he used to playful or hyperactive. My own guess that he had always been a bright kid, at least. We will see evidence for OG Cale's intelligence later on, as subtle as it is.
Also quite early on, Eric remembers Cale as his Dongsaeng, and kept writing him letters. When he meets Cale in canon, he thinks that "his hard work was finally paying off". We can conclude two things about this relationship: one, OG Cale tended to ignore Eric. Two, despite mostly ignoring him, he still did not reject his advice outright. So their relationship was at the very least friendly-ish. So OG Cale wasn't "completely awful" to his peers – the ones he respected at least. He was at the VERY least, mildly amicable. Obviously both Neo Tolz and Venion Stan considered Cale a total loser, so he had no friendly relationship with those two.
If I remember correctly, Basen's flashback was mentioned twice, once from his own POV, and once again from his brother's, with more detail. After getting bullied by some relatives of the Henituse family, OG Cale told him to stand proud and declare himself as "Henituse blood ". While Basen doesn't quite understand the reasoning behind it (after all, Cale was 8 and Basen was only 5 at the time), he listens and gradually becomes accepted into the noble social circles as the "apparent heir". So we can conclude two things: OG Cale was observant enough to read a room – both the general vibe and the political sense, which indeed makes him quite clever for his age. And second, and even more important, is the fact that OG Cale was charismatic. It went beyond his acting abilities.
And finally, we get to the part where OG Cale actually speaks himself about the past. He states that "the family wouldn't kick him out no matter how much he acted out". So it was his actual GOAL to get kicked out!! I don't know about you guys, but I suspect OG Cale would have had no problem adjusting and making an honest living if that ever actually happened. Someone with his acting skill and brains? He totally could have changed his name, left the country and live as a commoner. He had "expensive tastes" in clothes in food – or at least he pretended to – but he made do with Kim Rok Soo's life just fine. It really seems to me like he was fully prepared to "throw away the name of Cale Henituse" LONG before the transmigration happened.
I'll quickly go over the implications of his account from the 20-year-long war from the TBOAH timeline; OG Cale survived long enough to live to see the final battle. He was a soldier. He was able to keep KRS's role as a Team Leader without major difficulty. He was a talented fighter, a brilliant strategist, and overall an extremely capable man. Not something you would expect from a dumb kid who spent his entire childhood ignoring his studies and being spoiled rotten by his dad.
So, to quickly sum up all facts about OG Cale:
He was a compassionate kid, at least towards his dad, and we see him still being compassionate and a good dude as adult transmigrated KRS, so that has to be his "real", base personality
He could read the political climate at early age and came up with a clever strategy to elevate his step family's social position
He was brilliant and an incredible actor, able to play with other people's expectations, and knew how to fuel rumors to reach even across borders
He kept his real personality under lock and key so the 5 people he actually liked never suspected how far his acting go, they thought he was lashing out because of his mother's death
He still wasn't a total jerk to his peers even if he ignored Eric's advice
OG Cale had a talent for strategies and fighting despite being "average", like knowing how to miss on purpose and terrorizing gangsters into behaving themselves in the Henituse territory, and becoming a good enough fighter to survive 20 years of war in TBOAH timeline.
Things we absolutely DO NOT KNOW about OG Cale:
His exact childhood personality, or his relationship with his mom. All we know is that they were very close
Whether he ever let his guard down around anyone, or if he acted as trash 24/7 in front of everyone
Whether he actually threw away his studies like everyone assumed, or if he still continued his education in secret
Why exactly he decided that being a spoiled brat wasn't enough and decided to add drinking to it at the age of 15 (maybe becasue it wasn't working and he wanted to be thrown out? That's still only my own speculation though)
Whether OG Cale's immunity to alcohol extended to other poisons as well (but it's a fun headcanon regardless)
Whether he was ACTUALLY unhappy as "trash of the count's family", or if he liked playing his role. Many fans make him out to be this tragic, misunderstood victim, but he might as well has been merely pretending to be unhappy… with all the money and fancy clothes and delicious food and everything. For all we know, he could have been having the time of his life fooling with everybody's expectations – aside from some minor angst over no one realizing the truth. (I've read a couple of fanfics where OG Cale actually has fun acting as an agent of chaos and honestly, I can see that being canon. OG Cale!KRS in the side-story is definitely mischievous, and KRS!Cale loves acting and scamming as well. Still; it's all just speculation with no clear evidence to support it.)
Why he complained about Beacrox's food, there could be plenty of reasons (he could have been jelous of Ron's attention, maybe he did not like Beacrox personally, maybe he just wanted to sell the act more and actually loved the food; who the heck knows)
What rank he had in the army later on (Some people suggest he found an Ancient Power, but I kind of doubt it, while some other fan headcanons make his a Swordmaster, which is NOT impossible seeing as his sister Lily is becoming a very powerful swordsman in canon... but there is no evidence for either. For all we know he could have been a freaking mage lol)
Whether he ever found out about Alberu's identity as a quarter Dark Elf in the TBOAH timeline (we have no idea if he ever got close to know any of Choi Han's allies or even Choi Han himself, he only said he saw him on the battlefield)
I hope this helped!
I like stoic Cale, but I LOVE childish Cale more. For example:
When he was truly acting like a child while disguised as Naru.
When Alberu threatened him with the prime minister post.
When he got jealous of the fact that HD has smoother skin than him.
When he sat on the ground and almost cried thinking that he won't get any money from (?) world.
When he complained to Eruhaben about that pervert dragon.
When he panicked during Eden's birth and asked for Clopeh's help.
(There were more moments when Cale acted childishly. But I can't remember those right now.)
Some scenes where Cale might act childish:
Scene 1: Once he woke up from a long nap to find that everyone had started a fun group activity without him— something like a snowball fight or a card game. He stood in the doorway, watching them laugh for a solid minute, a deep pout forming on his face. He then silently turned around, went back to his room, and burrowed so deep under his blankets that he looked like a disgruntled caterpillar cocoon. It took Ron bringing him a special, extra-sweet dessert to lure him back out.
Scene 2: He was reading a letter from his father, who was going on and on about how much he missed him and how he should visit. At the end, there was a small comment praising another territory lord's son for his administrative skills. Cale stared at the letter. He then took a pen and, very neatly, drew a frowning face next to his father's compliment. He didn't send it back, of course. He just... kept it in his drawer.
Scene 3: During a meeting with the Western Kingdom's representatives, who were being particularly difficult and condescending. Cale sat through it all in perfect silence. But halfway through a pompous speech, he started slowly, deliberately shredding a piece of paper on the table into tinier and tinier strips. He didn't look up, his face was a perfect mask of boredom, but the growing pile of paper snow was a silent, childish tantrum that made Choi Han subtly move to hide a smile behind his hand.
Scene 4: After being forced to attend a long, boring, and fancy banquet, he returned to the estate, kicked off his uncomfortable dress shoes right in the middle of the hallway, and proceeded to walk to his room in only his socks, leaving the shoes where they lay. When a servant scrambled to pick them up, Cale just waved a hand dismissively without turning back, "Leave them." Because those shoes deserve it for hurting his feet for six hours."
Scene 5: When Beacrox made a new dessert and presented it to the table with a flourish. There was exactly one piece left, and Choi Han's hand and Cale's hand both reached for it at the same time. They froze. A silent, intense stare-down ensued. Choi Han's eyes held respect and a slight retreat. Cale's eyes, however, held the pure, unadulterated stubbornness of a toddler who had claimed the last cookie. Choi Han wisely withdrew his hand. Cale took the dessert, his expression victorious, and ate it in one satisfied bite.
I have a tiny nagging feeling that Cale's biological parents from Earth 1 are important people and might play a huge role in the story.
I get that it's pretty common for almost every single fantasy protagonist out there to be an orphan just for the sake of plot and to give them a tragic backstory to add more flavor to their character—and usually, their late parents are irrelevant to the overall main plot.
But this is TCF we're talking about which often subverts tropes. Where miniscule seemingly insignificant details turn out to be much more crucial later on in developing both the plot and characters.
Take Jour Thames as an example. In TBOAH, she was not directly mentioned nor were we given much information about her character—hell, she didn't even make an appearance. All we knew was that she was the late countess who died in a carriage incident. For hundreds of chapters, she was not once mentioned.
But who would've thought that the mother of the minor villain from a typical fantasy novel actually played a vital role to the plot and knows more about what's going on than what we were let on? Her ancient power—which we didn't even know she had—greatly helped Cale in finishing off White Star for good. Additionally, her journal gave Cale some insight about the Hunters and knowledge about time.
She's one of the most important characters in TCF despite her status as a minor side character.
Who's to say Cale's parents aren't either?
Moreover, Cale is a special person. Everything that has happened to him, everything that's related to him—they're not coincidences. There's always some hidden history or background to it. Such as how every misfortune that has befallen on him was all due to a curse and that he was supposed to be born in Nameless 1, but his original body got stolen by White Star. There were Hunters who targeted him during his high school days and erased some of his memories. He was fated to die but he lived. There's a high possibility that he is of Thames lineage had White Star not stolen his body—belonging to an enigmatic family who studies and researches subjects regarding time.
I doubt Cale's parents are normal. They're the ones who gave birth to such a peculiar person after all.
Rosalyn: What is your most preferable method when dealing with troublesome people?
Cale: Strangling people. It's oddly satisfying.
Rosalyn: Oh, uhm. That sounds...lovely. Err, how about you...?
Og!Cale: Throwing wine bottles at people. A tried-and-true method. 100% recommend it. Therapeutic too.
Rosalyn: ...
I think that, as a Fandom, we don't exploit enough Ohn and Hong cat behavior.
I mean, look at the potential...
LCF AU where Rok Soo and OgCale have the same age and, for various reasons, whenever someone wants one of them kidnapped, they describe him as "a good looking (age) guy with reddish brown eyes" and so they always get the wrong one.
Someone wants to kidnap OgCale to demand ransom? They kidnap Rok Soo. Forget the money, he doesn't even have the Henituse phone number to call them. Depending on the kidnappers he may get himself free or they'll let him go once they realize he's not their guy. Or, if they took long enough, some of his friends are going to show up breaking doors and walls.
Someone wants to kidnap Rok Soo for whatever reason? (Maybe his uncle has a debt and threw Rok Soo under the bus or smth) They kidnap OgCale. He spends half of the time annoying the kidnappers on purpose and half of the time trying to figure out who the fuck is Rok Soo and why did these people want to kidnap him. Once, the person who "ordered" the kidnapping hadn't actually ordered it. He had just told someone to "take care of this" and they somehow understood "kidnap this guy and scare the shit out of him or something". That time OgCale didn't even need to do anything to get out of there. The boss appeared half-way and scolded them all, then freed OgCale himself and served him tea for his troubles. He ended up making a friend.
The day they finally meet,
OgCale, used to this shit: hey, you're the guy people mistake me with.
Rok Soo, also used to it, but an hypocrite: you're that poor bastard who people want to kidnap.
I need a fic where Cale sees Jung Soo sleeping/napping somewhere, and his first reaction is to. freak out. Panic.
It goes like:
At first, it's just a mild worry, and he quietly observes the rise and fall of his chest. It is enough to keep him relieved, until his anxiety decides it isn't.
Despite his hesitance, he approaches the figure of the sleeping wanderer, sits beside where he's asleep and awkwardly presses his ear where his heart should be beating. The rhythm of Jung Soo's even breathing and the steady heartbeat behind the ribs helps his own calm down a little. But then he freaks out again, because Record has this toxic tendency where it randomly replays memories of similar scenes, and Cale's eyes burn as he recalls the time his ear could not catch any sounds but static no matter how much he pressed it close to the same chest he leaned on.
It doesn't take long for Jung Soo to wake up. Maybe he was awake from an earlier point, and he was just pretending. He doesn't push Cale's head away, instead his hand is quick to place itself on the soft red locks, pressing the startled man's face closer.
"Good morning, dongsaeng." He greets, his hand ruffling the redhead's hair.
"Who's your dongsaeng, punk." Cale frowns as he tries to get his head off, but Choi Jung Soo's hand atop his head is as stubborn as much it is gentle.
"See? Very dongsaeng behavior." Jung Soo's ear is being pinched very hard, but he only laughs it off.
..
hwhsksbwmw. You get the vibe. Now I die
If Cale were a BL top:
Bottom: I need money for my mother's treatment. Please, I'll do anything to pay you back!
Cale: anything?
Bottom: (gulp) ... Anything!
Cale: think again.
Bottom: yes.
Cale: alright. My butler will transfer the money to your account. What kind of illness is it, or is it an injury? I'm close with some of the best doctors in the world so let me see who we need to contact for this one. Also, you can move into my mansion starting today. You start work tomorrow.
Bottom: (sweating and trembling, thinking he'll be asked to perform sexual service in return) w-what kind of work will I be doing?
Cale: I've seen your resume. You're not a man of many skills but I'll be sure to put your existing talents to use.
Bottom: a-are you not going to make me pay y-you back with m-my body?
Cale: of course you're going to pay me back with your body. And your brains. And anything else you can offer.
Bottom: (feels like there has been a shift in genre somewhere but can't prove it)
In most of the de aged KimCale fics I read so far, the plot is mostly about the fam discovering the horrible abuse Cale had to go through as Kim Rok Soo, suffering thru the PTSD and helping him out of it, and all that hurt/comfort, healing type of beautiful angst.
But sometimes I crave some twisted angst, where kimcale is de-aged to a point before the abuse and the trauma. Where he was just a soft, smart little boy who loved his family and complained about side dishes.
I want to see Ron offering him the usual lemonade, but to his surprise, Rok Soo refuses. Because why should he accept something he doesn't like? I want to see him smile care-freely, leading Ron by his hand while calling him grandpa, and have the old butler reminisce on the young og!Cale who used to smile just the same. I want to see Choi Han stiffen in shock, wondering if this child is really the same boy he saw in the worthlessness test. I want the kids to play with him, see him tear up when he trips and gets hurt. He doesn't say he's fine when they ask- it hurts, he says instead, and wants to go home and nap. They wish he had stayed the same, admitting he was in pain and avoiding getting hurt. I want to see him hang around with Eruhaben and Rosalyn, excited about their experiments and magic, marvelling at the dragon's golden hair with utter wonder, curious about every new, fun discovery. I want to see him be picky about meals, but eat all the snacks Vicross brings, saving the sweetest ones for 'appa and eomma'. I want him to still get into all sorts of trouble, courtesy of the curse, and have Eruhaben help him out every time, complaining about how much of an unlucky bastard he was, all while patting and hugging the scared Kim Rok Soo.
I want to see him show affection and love freely, show discomfort and sorrow, without the fear of being abandoned or hurting/being hurt by the other. Just a child who is oblivious about the curse, still too young to understand pain or hunger.
I want a small, expressive Kim Rok Soo, that is a clear contrast with the stoic, grown up Cale Henituse.
Cries because why do POV og Cale fics flub his character? T-T guys he isn't actually an asshole I thought this was established at the beginning of the novel, he's been acting the whole time
Time to go on a info dump on og Cale for the sake of my heart
1) he says that terrible thing about Harris Village because his mom died there
2) he never hits anyone except gangsters. He conditions the people around him into flinching because he will throw things "at them" but misses on purpose
3) he isn't drunk when he does the things he does
4) he has a well conditioned body
5) he ruins his reputation to protect his step family from his relatives and the public eye (it's been a while since I read the novel so I don't remember where I read that, but I'm pretty sure it's accurate)
6) he did not hate his step family, and supported Basen. "Listen to me, you are a Henituse." (I don't remember exactly what he said)
7) he treats his father Deruth and Ron respectfully, and just avoids his step family
On a side note:
1) Ron and Beacrox got interested in Choi Han because they could smell Arm's people on him, not because he was strong. They were motivated to use Choi Han, to stay behind a strong person, to and investigate the circumstances of Arm on the Western continent. We don't actually know how Cale himself felt about them deserting him.
2) Beacrox didn't like Cale because he insulted his food and went around in dirty places. If Beacrox disliked Cale for taking up his father's time, I don't know? I'm not entirely sure if Cale disliked Beacrox too, he just refused to eat Beacrox's food in canon.
3) Ron tried to keep a distance with Cale. He never interfered when Cale went out to "play," just like Deruth never corrected Cale's behavior. Cale was aware (I think?) that Ron reported his behavior to the count.
4) Cale survives to the end of the war with the White Star and even fights him. Cale was not weak, though we don't know what he was strong in (swordsmanship seems likely). He becomes the Count. He calls the Henituse family, "our family" to krs!Cale, meaning that at least by the time he possessed KRS, he felt they were his family. This could be stretched, and he had always believed they were his family, or not.
5) Cale is a person that is both similar to Kim Rok Soo and dissimilar. I think something along that lines was suggested when he met krs!Cale as Heniroksoo for the first time.
6) it's suggested in the side stories that he couldn't enjoy the food in his world, and that's why he enjoys the food on Earth 1. This would explain why he refused to eat Beacrox's food, and why Beacrox got so proficient at cooking- to finally be affirmed by Cale that he made good food. Which actually disproves the idea that Beacrox was jealous of Cale. I think that it's confirmed that Cale had a poor appetite in canon, so it would make sense.
Feel free to add on or correct me about og!Cale or other facts, we love to see some og!Cale appreciation!

Day 2: "Ghosts and Spirits"
The psychologist's payment hasn't been processed for two days, so don't thank me
