Okay I just started This Novel is not My Novel and my first quippy reaction is: when you pretend to be a tsundere so hard you’re not pretending anymore

I am really loving how Karvie (that’s what I’m calling him now)’s perspective as an author familiar with tropes and setups is bringing to this. Like. He knows. He is self aware of the tropes he is using and the cliché lines that are obvious foreshadowing. Perhaps a little too aware. Can’t wait for this to backfire on him as he becomes attached to these characters as people and is forced to reconcile his fictionalized lens with the actual reality before him!

Tbh I am a believer that every narrative story is, to some extent, a kind of metaphor, or at least, you can find metaphor within them. Especially with these more well-thought out transmigration stories that let us in on the originals’ lives. In this case, the metaphor seems pretty obvious: a person who struggles to trust and accept affection due to a life of isolation and intense bullying, used to becoming the target of gossip and manipulation, suddenly finds himself in a new place, surrounded by new people. But he has the perfect excuse to continue distancing himself from them, because they’re all either fated to die or are written as “extras” and “villains”…or they’re the Protagonist, who is destined to become involved in all kinds of dangerous affairs. Thus, there’s a direct parallel to be drawn between his current situation and his past life as he—however unintentionally—re-enacts that past life, not in how he speaks to others, but in his own internal thought process: over-analyzing, assuming bad intentions, and distancing himself. The Protagonist is the one who sees through this, however slanted their own view of the situation is, and is the first to break through, slowly but surely drawing him out of his shell…

You had the option to embrace the amnesia plot and thoroughly act like a different person, fully disregarding others’ opinions and establishing a brand new reputation for yourself. But no! You clung to your dignity, scared of what others would think of you, attempting to mimic the barbed words of the original goods, even as your soft heart ached, justifying it all with elaborate reasoning that frames your own decisions as the only path you could have possibly taken. You’re the one who tripped and fell head first into the tsundere archetype, and then tried to justify why you’re totally not a tsundere simply because you already knew what that term meant and had too much shame to willingly associate with it! Which is, in fact, a classic tsundere move!

…okay, I really genuinely love the relationship developing between Karvaldr and Reisir here. It could have easily been a case of Karvaldr falling into a tsundere trope without anything but token resistance and Reisir leading that on as a matter of course. And while there are moments of levity like that, there are moments like this chapter that give that relationship so much more texture and depth.
Because we get to Mir he part of this friend group, we can also see how his own guilt over not somehow doing more to prevent Reisir’s dark future and his own self-deprecation can be actively negative. He’s right, they came out of the academy to clear their heads and spend time having fun, but what he doesn’t realize is that the thing that the others are currently hung up on is his own insistence on refusing to acknowledge both his own suffering and his own good points. He treats himself as an inherently bad topic of conversation, aware that the others are worried about him, but refusing to engage with the implications of that, and assuming that he’s not worth being taken seriously. If anything, he’s probably terrified of being taken seriously.
He doesn’t want them to hear about Karvaldr’s apparent suicide attempt, and the resulting apparent amnesia, because to him, it’s fine. He’s not the one who was suicidal, and he knows so much! Even the future! Even though he had to spend weeks cramming the basic knowledge of his own family and the layout of the Academy and the names of the professors into his head, he still doesn’t consider his own situation as something as “serious” as amnesia.
But that own disregard for himself is not only something that Reisir deliberately points out, the others are also picking up on it, and it makes things uncomfortable! I kind of have to applaud the way Reisir handles him…Karvaldr keeps saying he’s full on nonsense and it’s not like that, but…at this point, we the readers also have very little proof that Mir was, in the last life, a person who was comfortable with things like openly expressing friendliness and taking praise at face value.

Instead of responding like a normal person, saying “Good luck,” or something like that, you tried to brush him off coldly on habit and he couldn’t help but think “ah, of course you would say it like that, in spite of obviously warming up to me enough that you would stand in the photo booth together and trust me to stick my Ether in your brain” and that’s objectively hilarious! How could he not laugh!
Reading your thoughts is so nice- honestly you caught way more unreliable narrator signs than I thought were there... I can't help that I want to trust the narrator t^t betrayed every time.... Well I knew he was an unreliable narrator! I just didn't realize that even statements like "I'm someone that knows how to accept thanks and apologies" weren't true.... why did I believe him!!!!! Caught by the unreliable narrator unreliably narrating....
I'm so glad you like their relationship!!!!!! Honestly it might be my favorite aspect of this novel~ it's so much more than tsundere + teaser!!!! Reisir genuinely understands Karvaldr to a high degree, and actively seeks to understand him more. I also love you describing the "texture" of their relationship. Karvaldr is caught up in his guilt from 'ignoring' Reisir's future and trauma from being bullied, and Reisir isn't purely teasing Kar for the sake of teasing him. He has serious moments! He actively examines why Kar reacts like he does. Which is why I love them so much!!!! Their teasing is cute and funny but their serious moments are hard and confronting. Jabiahodjihdidjodn
"He doesn't want them to hear about Karvaldr's apparent suicide attempt, and the resulting apparent amnesia" OH WAIT TILL YOU LEARN ABOUT KARVALDR'S FAMILY AND HOW BAD IT ACTUALLY IS, Karvaldr goes home and comes back saying things like "mhm I was a beloved child mhm" SO FAST. I won't spoil the family drama but Kar takes the same stance about his family as he does the suicide attempt and amnesia: no one, but especially Reisir, can find out about this.
AhhghggGgghgghagwhg and YES Kar has only a subconscious understanding that he is responsible for Reisir's happiness, usually thinking that it's bc he enjoys teasing him. And he does! But also he enjoys being with Kar, and despite Kar's attempts to block him, they both end up having a good time when they hang out. Not that Karvaldr knows that!!!! Well during it he's partly consumed by his guilt and thinking "yeah, smile and laugh now, soon you won't be able to" and then making himself depressed about it.
And YES if any one of his not-friends(that's what I call them ;3 bc he's too stubborn to admit they are his friends right now)finds out that Kar knew in advance? They know him!!! That he takes on burdens on his shoulders without hesitation and then dismisses his own efforts- how could they not realize it? In fact, his dismissing his own efforts only escalates!! Of course they'll understand that, it's not that he didn't tell them because he didn't trust them, but because he already bore the weight of the future on his back- and it's depressing nature- he decided he didn't need to let anyone else handle it. He tells no one and hides as much as possible.
Oh boy, a complex character who's a woman! I love messy characters who hurt everyone around them and continue the cycles that hurt them!! Can't wait to share this joy with fellow fans– why's everyone calling her a bitch
