Metropolitan State University of Denver Studio Foundations: 4D Module 4: Project 4 Inspired by The Artist Is Present by Marina Abramovic
For this project, I decided to do one of my favorite things: read (here I am rereading the Hobbit for the 17th time). However, this presented a challenge for me; I hate drawing any attention to myself, especially in public. I decided to challenge myself in completing this project in my local coffee shop. It was odd bringing in my camera and videoing myself. I got many strange looks. It made me very uncomfortable. But, I thought, “How would Marina Abromovic feel?” “Would this embarrass her?” No. She is confident is her abilities to make people uncomfortable in very interesting ways. If she can stand nude in public for hours, then I can read my book in a small coffee shop with a camera in front of me for three minutes. Overall, this project helped me step out of my comfort zone, even if it was just a little. I really enjoyed thinking of an idea and reading my favorite book for a class! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

Lin-Manuel Miranda on The Role of the Artist in the Age of Trump
In The Role of the Artist in the Age of Trump, playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda reflects on how truth inherent in art means that “all art is political”.
At the end of the day, our job as artists is to tell the truth as we see it. If telling the truth is an inherently political act, so be it. Times may change and politics may change, but if we do our best to tell the truth as specifically as possible, time will reveal those truths and reverberate beyond the era in which we created them. We keep revisiting Shakespeare’s Macbeth because ruthless political ambition does not belong to any particular era. We keep listening to Public Enemy because systemic racism continues to rain tragedy on communities of color. We read Orwell’s 1984 and shiver at its diagnosis of doublethink, which we see coming out of the White House at this moment.
In a 1969 piece, Kurt Vonnegut asserted that art is an early warning system for society:
I sometimes wondered what the use of any of the arts was. The best thing I could come up with was what I call the canary in the coal mine theory of the arts. This theory says that artists are useful to society because they are so sensitive. They are super-sensitive. They keel over like canaries in poison coal mines long before more robust types realize that there is any danger whatsoever.
While not specifically about art, here’s a bit of what I wrote in a January 2017 post, How to Productive in Terrible Times.
I’ve always had difficulty believing that the work I do here is in some way important to the world and since the election, that feeling has blossomed into a profound guilt-ridden anxiety monster. I mean, who in the actual fuck cares about the new Blade Runner movie or how stamps are designed (or Jesus, the blurry ham) when our government is poised for a turn towards corruption and authoritarianism?
I have come up with some reasons why my work here does matter, at least to me, but I’m not sure they’re good ones. In the meantime, I’m pressing on because my family and I rely on my efforts here and because I hope that in some small way my work, as Webb writes, “is capable of enabling righteous acts”.

10 Things I Wish I Knew Before University
You are going to feel like dropping out. I would say to stick it out for the first year and sit for finals. If you get a good grade for your finals, that could really give your confidence a boost and motivate you to keep going. And then, if you still feel like dropping out or changing majors, you should do as much research as possible.
Feeling pressured to do more things. During my first year, I said yes to everything–even things that I didn’t feel like doing. I felt like if I didn’t, I’d be missing out on something really important or fun. FOMO, basically. However, more often than not, I wasn’t missing much and these opportunities will arise again very soon.
Buying too many unnecessary things. I bought so many stationery and notebooks before I started uni in hopes that they would motivate me to study. I ended up not using even half of them my first year. At least, I’d be set for supplies until I graduate.
Revising in uni is not the same as revising in high school. I used to think I could study last minute for a test, like I did in high school. I learned the hard way that that wasn’t the case at all. Now, I review the topics after every lecture. The key is to keep up because all those lectures are going to pile up really fast.
Past papers are your new best friend. I find that professors have their favourite questions that they like to give out. During finals, they might even use the same exact questions as they did in tests!
Failing/Getting a low grade in a test isn’t going to ruin your life. I once got so caught up on that one test. But luckily during finals, I snapped out of it and just tried my best. My final grade wasn’t too bad. You live and you learn.
Wear whatever you want (as long as it doesn’t get you in trouble). When I wear a hoodie and sweatpants, I get comments that I look like I just rolled out of bed (which I did, duh). And when I have really nice makeup on and do my hair, I’m trying to impress someone. I think people just like to run their mouth and it’s nothing personal, so you shouldn’t care what they say anyway.
Keep in touch with friends outside your university. It can really come in handy during times when you really have to vent about someone in your classes. They can also help you keep grounded and have a different perspective.
You don’t have to love the library. I’m the kind of girl who studies lying on her stomach on the bed with papers and books surrounding me and my cat stepping on them occasionally. I think the library is too quiet and public for me. And if you’re the same way and prefer the cafe or elsewhere, then that’s okay too. The goal here is that you get your studying done.
Stay healthy. Whenever it’s near finals, I would abandon every other responsibility except studying. I would stop eating healthy and quit exercising, all in the name of making time to study. But they should go hand-in-hand with studying and not one or the other. I find that the better I take care of myself, the better my grades are. You should also get enough sleep–this, I never fail to do.
11. Don’t expect to make your new best friends within the first week of starting university. Or the first month. Or even the first year. You’re likely going to be making a lot of ‘emergency’ friends when you first start out; people you may have little in common with, or even may find you do not like that much after a while, they’re just available and also anxiously looking for friends. Forming your lasting, close friendships will probably come a little later when you’ve had a chance to meet more people and figure out who you do and don’t click with. I felt incredibly lonely during my first year of uni but completed my second year of uni with the largest and closest group of friends I have ever had. This is normal. Don’t rush.
“I think communication starts when words are not present at all ... I think we put so much emphasis on language, actually silence is so much more important.”
“The function of the artist in a disturbed society is to give awareness of the universe, to ask the right questions, and to elevate the mind.”
“Through performance, I found the possibility of establishing a dialogue with the audience through an exchange of energy, which tended to transform the energy itself. I could not produce a single work without the presence of the audience, because the audience gave me the energy to be able, through a specific action, to assimilate it and return it, to create a genuine field of energy.”
Marina Abramovic is a Serbian performance artist who mainly explores body art and feminist art. Throughout the film, I noticed an importance for the participation of the audience. Without their involvement, Marina’s artwork would not be complete. This emphasis the relationship between the performer and the audience or link between the body and the mind. After viewing the film, I feel as though Marina’s art extremely challenged her physically and emotionally. Doing the performances requires bravery, courage, and a determination that one does not see often. I really admire her in this way. Her performance art challenges us socially. Often, I would ask myself, “would I go through those two nude people? Would I have the courage to do this?” It shed a whole new light on the meaning of performance art for me.
4D Art class art project on light, color, shadows, and vanishing. Music: Olafur Arnalds - Agust (Living Room Songs)
Here is my take on Vanishing and Becoming project. It was a lot of fun but also very difficult to get started with. I’ve read others and understood their frustration on a theme for this challenge. I went with an old retro projector that my family has had for many years and wanted to implement an idea of light and color with the sliding films. The wonderful actor you see here is my baby sister and I felt that it fit well with the theme of memories and passing them on to the younger generations. This project was a lot of fun and even though it’s more than a minute, I still wanted to get a full upload of my idea into place. Light and Vanishing reminds me of photos that come into our heads and are gone the next. We can remember one thing and forget it in a few seconds. Same with memories and photos, and that is what I really wanted to alliterate in this project.
This is such a beautiful video. I love the music that you picked. It felt very soothing and fit the theme. I also loved your idea for this project and incorporating your little sister in it. Hope you had fun making it together!
Projects Explained Through Architectural GIFs
In order to explain projects and design decisions properly, architects must use often rely on creative representation techniques instead of words. It’s part of the job. The quality of drawings - simple, complex, or anything in between - is fundamental for the correct reception of the ideas. Digital media has enabled new ways of representation including animation and adding a new dimension in a single image: processes.
Animated gifs can provide the same amount of information in constructive terms as a section, program distribution as a diagram and main decisions as a master plan, while at the same time showing the progress and chronology of the project.

Vanishing Guitar Picks
This is so neat! I love how you incorporated your real-life struggle with the guitar picks and the struggle with this project. I really enjoyed it. Thank you!

"Nature as Muse" by Alicia Smith Studio Foundations: 4D Metropolitan State University of Denver Project 3- Projection
“My first and perhaps most important comment is that we are at the very beginning of understanding how projection might work. If, as I believe, it is a huge significant metaphor in the ways we understand our relationships with the world and with each other, then the kinds of formal permutations signaled by artists actively engaging in projection as a malleable resource for the making of art are potentially a royal road toward making new ways of seeing.” -Sean Cubitt
For this project, I focused on nature and how to is the base of how we perceive the world. Originally, I was not planning for my dog to be in this, but she kept getting into my shots. I embraced her presence and she acted as my relationship with others. Our projection of the world influences many aspects of our lives, including our relationships with other people and environment. I feel as though nature is a way we can be surrounded with remembrance of understanding how complex our life is and how we can go back to something so basic to allow healing. People or animals can also help with this process, which is why I brought my dog with me in the first place.
I had an enjoyable time with this project. This article was super interesting and insightful. I read it several times and picked up different things each time. The process overall was easy. I figured everything out quite quickly and actually found myself enjoying the process of video making. I hope everyone else had an enjoyable time too.
Thank you!

Project 3
I took a scene from one of my favorite movies, Clueless and layered I’ll Make a Man Out of You (which is my favorite Disney movie). I thought this was an interesting idea. Sometimes I think of fashion as preparing for a battle. You are planning for what you are facing throughout the day. An outfit can change everything!
This was such a fun project! I did not take me long to figure out and I enjoy how my final product came out. I cannot wait to see what y’all did. Hope you guys enjoy!
Dancing with Myself-The Donnas Music Video
of me…dancing with myself.
project for my 4D class
This exercise was a little hard because my computer was acting up, but when I actually got to work with the video and the audio it was pretty easy!
I think my video is funny because the audio and movie I choose to do work so well together!
