Mercury Survey Results: Warming Up to New People
In my Mercury surveys, I asked how long it takes you all to warm up to new people, and here is what I learned from the responses! I talk about the results from both the original and follow up survey where applicable. I didn’t get as many responses on the follow up survey, so I mainly use it to clarify things.
I’m also going to include the Modes and Elements, because there’s some neat similarities between them :)

♈︎ Aries Mercury (Cardinal, Fire)
Even with the first written survey the Aries Mercuries did not give tepid responses. They all either responded that they warm up quickly, or it takes them a long time (a few wrote that it takes them years, some seemed like they were saying it jokingly and some seemed serious)
This is likely because I did not specify what I meant by warming up. In the follow up survey I gave a a few options for how they warm up to people, and it clarified that Aries Mercuries warm up to people easily when it comes to talking to new people, but it can take them a while to open up. The one Aries Mercury that said that they have a hard time talking to new and opening up to new people had Mercury square Saturn.
I don’t know if Aries Mercuries just aren’t into elaborating or something, but I definitely got the least detailed responses from them. As you’ll see, most of the signs had a lot of people who have no problem talking to new people, but have difficulty opening up. I know we’re more complex this this, but I don’t know if we’re that good at expressing it in words!
♉︎ Taurus Mercury (Fixed, Earth)
A lot of Taurus Mercuries responded by saying that it depends. Like a lot. It was seriously like every or every other response from them. If they like the person, if they hit it off, or if the person seems cool then they can warm up pretty quickly. But if the person puts off bad vibes, if they seem weird, or if there’s just something off about them, they will warm up very slowly if at all.
There were a few that said that in general, it takes them a long time to warm up, especially when it’s on a deeper level. They’ll be friendly, but they may tend to keep people at arms length.
♊︎ Gemini Mercury (Mutable, Air)
Like Aries Mercury, they can talk to and be friendly with someone quicker than they open up personally. Like Taurus Mercury, they’re sensitive to the vibes people put off.
Where it starts to seem different is in their perceptiveness to the willingness of others’ to talk/open up. You know how there are some people who just do not pick up on when you’re not in the mood to talk? Gemini Mercuries are aware of that, and don’t care to start a conversation with someone who doesn’t want to participate. If the person wants to talk, and Gemini Mercury is interested as well, they should have no problem getting a conversation going!
♋︎ Cancer Mercury (Cardinal, Water)
I found it really interesting that one (4thHouse) said that they have a hard time getting others to warm up to them. It was only one, but I wonder if any other Cancer Mercuries can relate.
Cancer Mercuries, in general because there were some exceptions, take a bit longer to warm up. In the follow up survey there were a fair bit of Cancer Mercuries that responded that they have a hard time talking to and opening up to new people. They also expressed that they can have a hard time with fully trusting people, and that they use their intuition when interacting with new people to kind of get a feel for them. That’s similar to paying attention to vibes of course, but it’s interesting that they’re aware of it and that they chose to say intuition.
♌︎ Leo Mercury (Fixed, Fire)
Leo Mercuries mentioned groups more than the other signs. If the person in question is a member of or involved in a group that the Leo Mercury is also involved in, or if that person seems like “one of them”, then they can warm up to that person quicker. But if the Leo Mercury is the new person in a group, then it can take them a bit longer to warm up to everyone. seems to me that they have an easier time opening up to people when they feel comfortable and confident in the situation, and a harder time when they feel like they’re the odd ones out.
There were also a few that more or less expressed that they’re friendly and open at first, but if after a few weeks they feel like it’s just not a match they’ll back off. They also don’t seem to like if people are boring and not engaging, although one said that they don’t like it when people are too energetic and in your face (they had Mercury Retrograde though)
♍︎ Virgo Mercury (Mutable, Earth)

They like to sit back and observe first. They try to figure a person out and get a bit of a grasp on them before they decide if they want to warm up to them. If they like the person it seems like they can warm up pretty quickly, but if they don’t they’re likely to keep them at arms length.
Like Gemini Mercury, they like for the other person to want to talk as well. They also expressed that they want the other person to but effort into the relationship. So don’t leave them on read, they’re not going to find it charming.
Of the Virgo Mercuries, the ones with Mercury in the Sixth House had the most difficulty warming up, which I found interesting.
♎︎ Libra Mercury (Cardinal, Air)
They don’t seem to care for people who are dishonest. They find it easier to open up to people when they spend a lot of time with them/when they’re consistently around them. So situations where they have a class together or work together are ideal for them to warm up to people.
Like Taurus, many of them stressed that it really depends on the person and the vibes they put out. If someone seems off putting, they’re really not going to want to open up to them. First impressions are very important for them.
It also seemed pretty split with the Libra Mercury responses. Some said that they open up almost immediately, and some said that it takes them ages. I feel like this is probably because of their sun signs. The follow up survey supports that, but I don’t have as many responses on that one though.
♏︎ Scorpio Mercury (Fixed, Water)
“I’m still warming up to my mother” STOP omg
In general, they take a while to warm up, and even longer to open up. Some said that they kind of keep to themselves when in new social situations, and others said that they come off as warm and charismatic, but they keep things superficial for a while. There were a few who specifically noted that people don’t know that they haven’t opened up. So it’s like, they can seem very friendly and open even though they’re keeping a lot to themselves.
It takes a while to earn their trust. One said that once someone has earned their trust, it’s hard to lose it. That could very well just be specific to them, but I’m curious if that resonates with anyone else!
♐︎ Sagittarius Mercury (Mutable, Fire)
Like Leo Mercury, they mention groups a bit. They find it harder to be the new person in a group, but if a person has mutual friends then they have an easier time warming up. Like Gemini Mercury, they like when the other person seems receptive. They’ll have an easier time warming up to someone who seems open than with someone who seems cold.
When it comes to opening up to someone on a deeper level, they don’t have a problem doing so because of trust (like Scorpio) but because they can have a hard time feeling emotionally vulnerable. They may be generally friendly and easy to talk to, but they’re not going to emotionally expose themselves to just anyone.
♑︎ Capricorn Mercury (Cardinal, Earth)
I was not really expecting to read this, but in a way it makes sense. Capricorn Mercuries want the other person to go first. As in, they want them to start the conversation first, to open up and share something personal first, to prove themselves loyal first, and so on. This might seem weird, because Capricorn is a Cardinal Sign, and Cardinal Signs initiate. What it reminded me of though was the archetype of the CEO. In a negotiation, you don’t want to lay all of your cards on the table first. It’s almost like they can treat new relationships in the same way. I’m not criticizing by the way, that seems fair.
They’re generally friendly and sociable, and also mentioned the importance of feeling an emotional connection a few times, which I found interesting.
♒︎ Aquarius Mercury (Fixed, Air)
They’re generally social. They either open up quickly or after a very long time, and it depends on how they feel about the person, how much they hit it off, etc..
A few talked about adapting their behavior according to the person they’re with. Like if the person is shy, they may be a bit friendlier to help them open up and feel more comfortable. One talked about putting up a facade until they get to know the person better, and a few others said something similar.
♓︎ Pisces Mercury (Mutable, Water)
They’re friendly and like meeting and being around new people. When it comes to opening up, it depends on the person’s vibes and how they feel about them in general. A couple of Pisces Mercuries said they they like when the person shares their views, and I guess my extension general opinions? Like, having similar music tastes, fashion sense, or similar hobbies. If not similar they should mesh well with each other.
When they’re not comfortable with someone, or when they just don’t vibe well, it’ll take a while for them to warm up (if ever for some of them)
