Review about 'Plus One', X Files Season 11 By: LISSETE LANUZA SÁENZ
Sooo agree with this review for the most part. It’s very good. Sharing a few bits from it that stood out to me.
We’re not idiots, Chris. We’ve been following this show for eleven seasons. We’ve been writing fanfic for 25 years. We’ve had time to watch and re-watch all these episodes to the point of obsession. We know Mulder and Scully, and we possess common sense and a working brain and we know that the shit you’re trying to sell is just …not working.
Heck, it wasn’t working back in the 90s, but now, now it’s just a slap in the face.
Mulder and Scully were never platonic, not really, but once they definitely stopped being that, we should have gotten more than an oblique hint, and by God, once they became an actual, real couple, they should have stayed together because why in the world did they break up did you ever give me a reason I’m not even asking for a good one, just a reason, any reason?
People who’ve just had sex always, always cover themselves up to their necks with the blanket as they lie next to their sort-of-platonic partner.
Imagine the eye-roll. Imagine.
Chris Carter right now, probably: They were just cuddling naked for warmth, it was a totally platonic situation. IT’S SCIENCE, TOTALLY NOT MADE UP.When your leads have a kid together, have sex, kiss on occasion and basically live together, you don’t get to use the word platonic. Forget the word exists. The word is banned. Bye Felicia.

Amen.
What is chris carters obsession with weird ass delayed reveals that add nothing to audience enjoyment? Like oh, Mulder and Scully are together in IWTB - and why the fuck would they not be - but I’m gonna play it ambiguous and coy for no reason for the first third of the movie and “reveal” it by showing them in bed together. Fine, cool to see them in bed together, but why did we have to spend the first half hour watching them awkwardly ignore the status of their relationship? Kind of ummm makes that first part of the movie unbearable.
And now with the sex in plus one. They’re in bed together, we all know where this is leading. But lets not give anyone the satisfaction of a kiss or the beginning of a love scene. No. let’s wait until midway through the next scene and not even let David take off his tank top so that we can continue to wait until Scully sits up in bed and we see her bare shoulders to “reveal” what everyone already knew. They fucked and they did fuck.
Sir, have you met an audience in your life? In what world does anyone give a shit when something like that is revealed. You’re not delaying the reveal of a murder mystery here, honey. You’re just taking away valuable screen time from the relationship everyone came here today to see.
fellow baby philes, why did you start watching the x-files and what was your first episode and did you fall in love immediately or was it the best netflix and chill option until you saw something really cool like the entire E.B.E. episode with the gross alien baby and then you were like “AESTHETIC GOALS”?
The first thing I remember about The X-Files:
I’m 4 years old, my mum is watching X-files and I’m sitting with her on the couch, half asleep. It’s defenietly isn’t the first time, because I already know, what The X-files is and who is Mulder and Scully. There’s an episode called “Unruhe”, I’m sooo scared that I close my eyes with my hands, but still watching through my fingers ( this episode still scares the hell out of me).
——
My mum still doesn’t understand why did she let me watch TXF with her. But since that day I always wanted Scully to get kidnapped and Mulder to save her and them to be together. So, I became shipper, when I didn’t even know what it was.
Just reading your tags and I though CC acts like a man scorned. Maybe Scully is based on someone that rejected him or maaaaybe, he’s been secretly in love with GA and her chemistry with DD bugs the fuck out of him. Because truly, he don’t hold a candle to DD.
Haha, well… I don’t know enough about how the three of them interact to give any kind of judgement on that. But what I will say for CC is that he certainly has a special affection for Scully that he doesn’t necessarily seem to have for Mulder. In some ways I wonder if Carter is akin to CSM. He is the puppet master - he loves the characters but also loves to torture them, and his relationship with Scully is kinda similar to Scully’s relationship with CSM.
CC was set on Mulder and Scully never becoming romantically involved from the very beginning. I think that was based on feeling the show would become more about the characters and their relationships than the cases they were investigating, which is what he expressly didn’t want. Unfortunately for him, it happened anyway.
It took him a long time to let this notion go, and he arguably destroyed the ending of the show because he refused to accept that the X-Files had become about Mulder and Scully rather than the cases they investigated since he pushed forward with season 9 thinking Doggett and Reyes could take over.
Even now, CC doesn’t seem to want to let go of what he wanted the show to be, and embrace what it has become. That’s why people - fans and critics alike - just look utterly bewildered when he keeps saying their love for each other is platonic. That’s not what GA and DD portray on screen, and it never has been.
I don’t think CC understands that it’s actually possible to have that kind of platonic love along side a romantic attachment. The fact Mulder is in love with Scully, and Scully in love with Mulder doesn’t take away from their deep platonic love for one another; it doesn’t take away from the respect and devotion they have to each other - in my opinion, it only strengthens it.
What I don’t get about Carter is why he doesn’t understand that. My only guess is that he’s never had that kind of romantic relationship himself, or he had a platonic relationship with someone that turned romantic and it ended badly, perhaps.
What’s so sad is that CC has a pair of characters who once had the epitome of a romantic human relationship. What Mulder and Scully have is so appealing because it’s what we all would want. To have a partner that is also your best friend as well as your lover. I mean, ffs, Scully says it herself in The Rain King - that the best relationships are the ones rooted in friendship.
What makes me worry for the future of Mulder and Scully is that I feel almost certain the person who I believe pushed for their relationship to turn romantic in the first place is no longer working on the show - Frank Spotnitz.
With CC guiding the ship alone, I am terrified of where we will end up without someone like Frank keeping his anti-MSR tendencies in check. Honestly, I don’t think that line about Scully having no one to have children with would have got through if Frank had been there to slap CC with his own continuity.
I really miss you, Frank.
“THE X-FILES works best when Scully and Mulder are doing their thing, complete with rambling theories that somehow manage to be flirtatious and bickering about “extreme possibilities” that somehow reads as foreplay. Just let it happen. It won’t change the dynamic or make the series less interesting because that is already the dynamic and already what makes the series interesting. Any attempt at hiding from the way that Anderson and Duchovny have consistently played their characters is a waste of television gold and actually causes the kind of muddying-up of the point that makes the series less entertaining — not moreso. In other words, forcing Mulder and Scully to be anything less than what they so clearly are to one another is, quite frankly, something that continues to ruin an otherwise brilliant pairing.”

my heart is breaking
With only seven episodes left, probably ever, it’s really okay to say that one plus one actually equals two…and Mulder plus Scully equals a depth of feeling so far beyond platonic that there probably isn’t even word for it. Even “love” just seems like a gross understatement at this point – as it should.

Preview: Terror Beyond Reason | Season 11 Ep. 4 | THE X-FILES
it’s a good thing mulder and scully hooked up twice (!) in this episode, because that is exactly the payment i would have demanded in order to put up with scully being all, “mulder, am i old? mulder, who would i POSSIBLY have had another kid with?? mulder, what if you meet another woman and want to have a family with her because i can’t have kids anymore??”
i could almost see chris carter sitting down at his laptop and going, hmmm, woman thoughts. woman thoughts. the thoughts … of a woman. what do women think? especially when they are over 40? I KNOW! THAT THEY’RE OLD AND USELESS WITHOUT THEIR ABILITY TO BEAR CHILDREN, AND PROBABLY THEY WORRY A LOT ABOUT THEIR DEVOTED TRUE LOVES LEAVING THEM FOR THIS REASON! sounds good, sounds legit.
like, first of all, these people were settled-down-married for at least six years (and maybe many more after that, since i don’t think we ever found out when they broke up pre-s10? correct me if i’m wrong), and they had plenty of time to have another kid and i think definitely would have talked about it! you should know this stuff, cc! you wrote it!!!! i think maybe a conversation reminiscing about them having tried for another kid during that time period and it not happening would have felt like it fit more into the … like, fabric of reality that this show established in the past.
and, come on, she would not be worried about mulder leaving her for another woman! she would be worried about opening her heart to him again and resuming their marriage and then having him go off the deep end of conspiracy theorizing madness once more!
the mere idea of mulder meeting some other woman and having a family with her is so laughable, so absurd, and something tells me dana katherine scully would not entertain it as a possibility for a single second in the year 2018.
COME ON NOW, CHRIS CARTER
but also thanks for the msr sexytimes. you did something right!
Ok, we *almost* got the sex scene, now we need Mulder and Scully to say “I love you” to each other out loud in one scene 🙏🏻
Not the same anon, but did you really get that from that scene? That they decided they're in this for good? I'm finding it hard to headcanon my way out of that conversation, especially since CC confirmed he didn't see it as being romantic.
They’re always together for good. I believe that. Chris Carter says platonic but he wrote a movie where they’re living together… he just made them have sex…
Chris Carter just doesn’t think the romance is important. But Mulder and Scully are always going to be together. He said it himself that the X-Files are Mulder and Scully. He’s called them romantic heroes. He has said several times that Mulder is in love with/attracted to Scully (script notes for IWTB, early interviews), points out that Scully is in love with Mulder several times on the show.
He is a liar and he likes to fuck with people. His definition of platonic is straight up incorrect on a linguistics level. But In the end it’s always Mulder and Scully.
I don’t know. I don’t think people should take it so hard that he calls it all platonic because he’s literally always wrong. The X-Files is romantic on accident, a love story that’s fought hard to exist every step of the way.
Mulder and Scully will always end up together.
Here’s a theory...
(Spoilers for Plus One, just in case you haven’t seen it and I haven’t spoiled it enough already).
I have an idea for an amazing way to end S11.I know CC tends to break our hearts and ruin it all, but wouldn’t it be simply amazing if that conversation they had tonight about having a second child was all part of a master plan. Skip to the last episode or episodes and we are catpulted about a year or so after the events of the majority of S11.Maybe a year or two after ‘Plus One’ and M&S are back living together and….. they HAVE ANOTHER BABY. The reason for Scully’s new hairdo in the final episodes is because of a timeleap and the whole point of that ‘what if you have a baby with someone else - and Mulder telling Scully she still COULD have a second baby’ conversation was all just a subtext because after that conversation, Mulder knocks Scully up. To add to it, the baby is a girl and they name her Samantha. So Mulder never found the original Samantha, but to wrap it all up he got his baby girl, Samantha.Alright, it’s a stretch, but OMG can you imagine?????
This post made me change my mind about the whole pregnancy situation!
This is the date, right? He says “it’ll be like a date”… and it seems they’re in their house.
She’s wearing casual clothing, looks like some kind of knitwear, and Mulder is wearing one of his MANY black t-shirts - that guy has basically had the same casual wardrobe since 1995.
So it’s a social night in together at their house eating jelly… and Mulder is looking at her like she’s the most adorable, lovely thing he’s ever seen.
I might be looking forward to next week again.
Reblogging again for this comment
My thoughts after a rewatch.
If Scully doesn’t end up pregnant after that pillow talk, then I don’t see what the point of it was?
Give Scully a baby that she can keep. ❤️
Honestly, that’s what I am thinking… what was the point of that conversation otherwise?
I know that William is a big part of this season, so maybe the conversation is more of a symbolic thing - signifying the imminent reunion of their broken family - to have the child they lost back rather than having a new one.
But I wouldn’t put it past CC to go down the crazy path of actually making Scully pregnant again, and perhaps that’s the “vertical turn” he’s talking about that happens in the finale?
Although if one of these two nights together make Scully pregnant, it makes you really wonder how she didn’t get pregnant again in the years she and Mulder were a couple? They were together for like, 14 years… So unless they were either really lucky (or unlucky) or just was very good about always using protection, then it would be a big wtf for her to get pregnant so easily here.
Especially considering her age.
Don't like the idea at all. As Scully said, the first time was a miracle. And now it's just happens again? In their age, with her problems with getting pregnant? And we already had this plot, look where it get us...
Also, somebody tell CC that woman can be happy without having children. After all this talk, I seriosly afraid that new pregnancy is exactly where we going...
New baby will not heal them, will not make them feel better about William. This is not how this things work. It’ll only bring more guilt about the fact that one child gets all their love, and other one have been given up.
couple of notes
* scully is suspicious AF at mulder getting them a room to share – which leads me to believe he’s been hinting at it for a while now. she seems terrified at the idea, but even more scared that he’s joking
* i think scully blamed the shit out of herself for his depression. she had to give up william, and she blames herself for that. she saw herself as the one holding mulder back from his quest in iwtb. mulder is childless, lonely. i think scully legit blames herself for all of that.
* so she has this idea in her head that mulder does not want her because she can’t give mulder what she thinks he wants
* all the while mulder is (seemingly) working on himself and pretty fucking desperate to be around her all the time
* when she says “what are we gonna do?” and mulder says “i’ll push your wheelchair with my wheelchair” i think he’s basically saying “where the fuck do you think i’ll be scully?”
* and i think scully knows that. i think scully deciphers from her conversation with him that he’s just as insecure as she is
* we’ll figure it out
