Cultural Stereotypes:

The most popular Google results based on enquiries using the names of countries as a search term. The names of seven countries(actually adjectives, not names, like British, American, French etc.) were input into thirty three Google search engines (for example google.co.uk, google.ru, google.fr, etc.). The search results are organized using electrical plug templates as a visual framework for the seven countries investigated. The results have been received between 27.07.11 and 04.08.11 the size of the spot shows popularity of each word. Some of the words are the same for several countries and this is on of the most interesting thing about. Some results can confuse people, thus audience thought “mafia” is Italian, however it is Russian, “design watches” was understood as Swiss, but it is Danish. In this project I didn’t want to show actual stereotypes, because they are individual for each person. Instead of this I wanted to let people decide what is stereotypes and what is not. During the exhibition some people made mistakes in identification of country, because they though stereotypical. Audience were surprised by some of the results thereby my aim was achieved.
