Advertising and copywriting

Copywriter - find an art director. Work in a team with copywriter and art director. Strategise - coming up with strategies which is very helpful. Unique ideas - be different to stand out. Craft copy - you dont need a degree in english. Can be helpful in advertising. Art direct. Off/online ideas. Problems solvers.

Call centre first. Then moved to creating adverts.

Topical advertisements.

Simplicity is key to successful communication. You dont need everything.

Problem solvers.

Powerful visuals are just as important. Be different to competitors.

Strong facts - research can inform good ideas.

Can be built off an issue e.g. potholes and CRVs. Creates an issue to speak about.

All the products are the same. Have to differentiate yourself strategically. USP. If theres nothing, tone of voice, look and feel need ls to stand out. Unusual media. Be disruptive.

Straplines/catchy.

Good staplines are distillation of the strategy/ message. They are memorable. They promise something. Interesting language. Can be used across all media.

Length matters - does it work for all of your idea?

Appeal to emotions of customers - humour, etc. Emotional connection.

Pastiche. Can set yourself apart.

Crafting copy- witty headline. (Newspapers/Journalists) Copy responds using appropriate tone. Bounce off visual. Important facts in first few paragraphs. Who? What? Why? How?

Be intriguing. Your Product Is The Solution. Go to the website. Short.

End line is very important.

A campaign is a series of ads surrounding a central idea

Ads do not need to look like ads. Make people curious to read the copy. Interesting editorial/advertorial. Striking visual images to intrigue.

Morals/Ethics

If competitors use photography - use illustration to stand out.

Create unique vocabulary in your copy/strapline.

Design a website that navigates in a totally different way

Go on, break the rules.

It doesn't always have to look pretty but it needs a message.

Strong branding unites all

Online the edgier the better

Idea for code/imagery exhibit

Dreamscope is the latest in a steady trickle of DeepDream tools created to help more people play around with Google's neural network. Since the code was first published to Github it has been used to tackle everything from images to video and even audio.

The trippy effect is a result of how the machine interprets images. Google developed its neural network to try and identify features in images, letting it learn when something is a picture of a mountain and when something is a picture of dumbbell.

Dreamscope doesn't give people the same creative freedom as DeepDream itself, but is a great way to play around with filters and create some nightmares.

Tokujin Yoshioka

Japanese artist and designer tokujin yoshioka is presenting his largest solo exhibition to date at the museum of contemporary art tokyo. ‘tokujin yoshioka_crystallize’ showcases a collection of retrospective artworks that document the evolution of his creative exploration, as well as new works that emphasize his dedication to the crystal medium. throughout his career, yoshioka has experimented with this material, particularly the formation of natural structures that are composed through a crystallization process. yoshioka adopts the practice for a variety of sculptural media and installation work, which includes furniture such as ‘spider’s thread’, a seven-stranded chair suspended in the air created by crystals growing onto seven fine threads (see designboom’s coverage of the crystallized piece, here).

Cath Cauldwell talk at BCU on editorial design. Really useful to see other peoples approaches to editorial and could be used as an inspirational springboard. The feedback she gave to my work was also very useful, as it allowed me to improve parts of it and recognise its strengths - such as the paint type - and ultimately to create a better version.

First Grad+ workshop at Birmingham City University. It's really useful for some tips on using Linked In professionally, as the platform is a bit intimidating.

Photos of extra packaging research

Further packaging research not limited to tea. I wanted to get a broader view on how packaging is shown, and through this research, I’ve found that pricier products have nicer packaging, through embossed font, texture and smooth weighty paper.

However, even from products such as Graze, there was parts that made it interesting, such as a part that stuck up from the original shape of the box. 

It made me realise that there are lots of different elements that can be added to give a slightly more premium feel.

Product Mock-up and exploration

We had a look at packaging and how it can be created. A good thing to look into would be different types of packaging or how the same can be reinvented. Its interesting to see how different information can be presented, and i’m realising how carefully items are placed for ease of reading.
