I have two very big things coming out in 2019.
The first is Highway Bodies, a book about queer teens who have to rely upon each other to survive during a zombie apocalypse. Itās set in Australia, and there are three POV characters:
Jojo, a non binary DORK whose town goes into lockdown when some weird things start happening at the local hospital
Dee, the bi drummer in a band who has gone to aā¦

found family
This weekend I only ended up doing one of my Continuum panels, Queering Space, because I was sick. An audience member asked us the question: what do we look for in sci fi stories that isnāt necessarily explicit queer representation, but rather what themes resonate with us as queer people. I thought about it for a bit because I wanted to say something positive, because Iām finding lately that I amā¦

reading matters
The Centre for Youth Literature run a conference called Reading Matters, which is all about childrenās literature. Itās a biannual conference and it ran over the past four days. I was invited to speak there and it was The Best. (I could only attend on the Friday, which makes me eternally sad). There were SO MANY cool people there and I had a blast, so hereās some word vomit. OK so one of the things Iām very bad at is thinking of names for stuff. There is a cafe in my short story Wolfskin that is a central location in the story, the River and Wheel. I got the name from this hipster business name generator. Basically it takes two random words and puts an āandā in the middle, gives you a nice font, it even generates a logo. And then youāve got a business. This saves meā¦

Honestly sometimes I go to DA and look at all the really unpolished and clearly beginner-levelĀ stuff being produced and I think to myselfĀ āLook! Ā Looky there! Ā There are the artists whose work I will be admiring enviously fifteen years from now! Ā Theyāre still new!ā and I donāt know, it just makes it impossible to see the art as terrible, and it also makes me really emotional.
I donāt care if youāre 90 years old and just picked up a pencil yesterday, your art is good and amazing and you are going places and every work of art is an act of bravery.
PLEASE DONāT STOP IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BAD AT THINGS.
BEING BAD AT THINGS IS HOW YOU GET GOOD AT THINGS.
