I would like to offer my thoughts on The Mandalorian and Grogu after first seeing it at the premiere last week, following the discourse around it, and rewatching it this week in 4DX (that was a lot of fun). Light spoilers incoming...

First of all, I will just say how incredible it is to have Star Wars back in the theater. It feels special that it is a movie based on the show that turned me from a casual Star Wars enjoyer to an intense fan. It was Ahsoka's appearance in season two that finally made me watch all the animated shows, and the rest is history.

I loved this movie so much, and it was even better on the second watch. It's fun, and reminds us why we love star wars in the first place. I love the depressing Galactic Empire Era of Star Wars as much as any other angst addict, but this is what we need right now. Not to bring politics in, but the world is very f'cked, and we need an escape. Escapism has always been a big reason why I personally was drawn to Star Wars. If you go rewatch A New Hope, you will be reminded of that, even if the stakes might have been higher. This movie has so many nods to the original movies that it just feels like a comforting blanket honestly.

What I enjoyed most with this movie is not surprisingly, Grogu. But it's not as simple as he is so cute. I mean, he is, but... I really loved his growth in this film, and people who were expecting him to speak must have been watching a completely different series than I was. It's a slow process, yet he communicates with Din Djarin in ways that we might not be able to grasp. I have seen arguments that he doesn't understand him, but I think he does in many different ways. They might not communicate in a secret language, but it works just as well. And in this movie, Mando finally learns that he can trust Grogu. he doesn't always need to be saved or protected.

Grogu is taking charge more than he ever has before. If you compare him just to the s3 finale, you will see a clear difference. This is why I espcially loved the second half of the film when he works together with the Anzellans to rescue Mando. And when he chooses to stay, that too, is a very active, hard decision for him. (And no, he shouldn't have taken off his helmet, he respects him too much for that.)

Most of the positive reviews I have seen underline the fun and inconsequential events of this movie: "your kids will love it", etc. Well, I am a single 30+ childless woman who just happens to love the bond of Mando & Grogu, and I think this movie has a deeper meaning, but it isn't on a "we are going to save the galaxy" level. It's about found family and looking out for each other, in true Star Wars spirit. That might sounds simple, but it's powerful imho.

He’d known that for many years. Stories of fathers fallen to blades of light and blaster fire, fathers lost and then found, fathers cold and cruel and fathers brave and kind. He’d seen former children proud of who came before them, or determined to do better, or forgiving even the most terrible things. The tales of fatherhood could fill a galaxy, but always, always, always, fathers die.

Yet still he was surprised at his father’s rough and gentle voice, telling him haltingly that someday he would leave and not come back.

It sounded like a lie. Except his father never lied.

Years passed. He learned. He spoke. And he thought he grew to understand.

He knew the flow of the Force. Knew the Creed. These paths both led him true, taught him that the end was not goodbye when one was remembered in soul and song. He knew that he could face the day when once it came. He was certain, and in his certainty his fears fell away.

One day, sooner than he hoped, longer than he’d feared, it was time.

Grogu knelt beside his father. The Force sang with the echoes of what had come before. The Way reminded him that the young became the strong. He laid a hand on Din’s chest and willed, hoped, strove — but the Force whispered that this was a pattern that could not be undone. The broken body had done all that could be asked of it. The firm and stubborn will had found a peace. They had loved each other, and Din had died a man fulfilled.

Grogu knew this, in his heart of hearts. He knew this day would find them. When had been the only question.

He should go. He should attend to his father’s body, to his beskar; he should say the words of grieving, release his father’s essence in the Force.

Grogu held his father’s hand, three fingers in five. He sensed the story in the beskar, the years they shared together, love and care and honor through and through. He allowed himself to lay in the crook of his father’s shoulder one last time, the way he did when he was small and scared and lost, and he imagined the sound of a heartbeat brave and kind.

There would be time enough later to speak the words, to alert the tribe. He would meditate on his grief, find a way to move forward instead of falling into despair. He would honor his father’s wishes to the last.

But for a moment Grogu lay there, safe and sound and hollow against Din’s silent chest, and he dreamed of a time before he knew that fathers die.

The movie was hella cute and fun, had my gripes with it but enjoyed myself despite them, and these sillies were everything, I love how there were parts with 0 human faces at times xP. Rotta and Grogu were such a fun duo 😭 and of course Din and Grogu are everything.

mando is relatable because he has a chronic form of shock fatigue. his life is so blatantly absurd that the comedy in the show is primarily delivered through his lack of a reaction to what happens to him, because almost all of the conflict he runs into is entirely out of his control. he gets his ass kicked by at least seventy percent of the people he comes into contact with, gets robbed, is forced to keep an infant alive despite literally everyone wanting to kill it, and he can barely make it through a social interaction without threatening someone. and he deals with all of that by sighing and hoping this isn’t the thing that kills him. mando is not in charge of his own destiny or even how he spends his free time, and he’s resigned himself to that with a quiet, grumpy sense of duty.

The thing about how you will talk like a tumblr user for the rest of your life is that usually people won’t clock it but sometimes you’ll meet someone and you’ll actually be able to see a look of painful recognition in their eyes when you say some tumblypoo bullshit while everyone else just thinks you had an epic original thought. There's an awful trend in reading that's this CinemaSins kind of rejection of abstract concepts and suspension of disbelief, that makes people say it's bad writing when authors use descriptions that aren't immediately one to one with physical reality.

Like it's bad when a "tattoo is undulating" (as opposed to... "drawn in a wave like pattern on the skin"?), or when hair is "wet wheat from a late Summer field" (as opposed to "sort of brownish light yellow that dries lighter, but is not actual wheat stalks growing on someone's head but kind of reminiscent of the color and texture"?), or when when ice cream tastes like midnight at the fair" (as opposed to "ice cream flavour bringing back memories of undefined ice cream flavours that are individually popular but always tied to a memory of late evening at the fair ground and probably smelling vaguely like popcorn and sugar"?).

Please. We have to get back to understanding abstract descriptions that evoke feelings and memories and mental images or things we haven't experienced yet. This hyper utilitarian way of reading and judging text is killing fiction. it's robbing you of experiencing things you haven't actually personally experienced.

It’s called poetry. And it belongs in prose just as much as it does in verse. Poetic language sometimes expresses things more clearly than plain talk. And a good writer knows when to use it.
