Petra, Jordan.
After adding Jordan to my “must visit” list about ten years ago it was a dream come true to be offered the chance to tour the country with Visit Jordan.
Petra itself was all that I imagined and more. Even from the first moment you step into the gates you have multiple jaw dropping moments. Once in the siq (the narrow canyon leading to the main sights) you feel like you’ve entered Indian Jones territory. Passing interesting rock formations on the way nothing quite prepares you for the first sight of the Treasury.
Petra as a site is actually huge and I recommend getting the two day pass if you go. Doing this allowed us, on the second day, to go back and enter at 6am and have the main sites almost to ourselves. If you're a photographer this is a stand out point and at this time in the morning the guards and early bird tourist seem to have respect and stand out of the way of the key facades.
On the first day we did the worthwhile hike up the mountainside to get a view of the treasury (we did the right hand side view but do the left do the left! It's much better) and that alone exhausted us so when we went to the Monastery for sunset we haggled a donkey ride up the steep steps for £5. It was probably the scariest but most fun thing I've ever done! Heading to the Monastery at his time was a good call as we hiked a little to "the best view of Petra" and had an incredible view for the setting sun all to ourselves. The only problem is you have to rush down to make sure you're not walking back in the dark.
Please do consider going here yourselves, and I hope the photos help to sell the site!
Earlier in the year as I came back off my year from travelling I had the honour to be chosen to be one of the photographers to shoot the Autumn/Winter range for Italian clothing company Meltin’ Pot.

Gleensheen, Duluth. Minnesota. https://glensheen.wp.d.umn.edu/tours/
“a ticket to Gleensheen is an opportunity for an authentic experience” is what they said as we entered the house... and as I left I couldn’t agree more on this point.
We had a few days in Duluth and saved this trip for the rainy day, which actually helped the whole experience by adding a great mood to the surroundings of the house.
Glensheen Mansion, perched on the shore of Lake Superior, is the most visited historic home in Minnesota. A 7-acre estate features gardens, bridges, and the famous 39-room mansion built with remarkable 20th century craftsmanship, telling the story of the Duluth region.
What a liked most about the tour was not only the beautiful decor and fantastic natural light that hit it but the fact that the decor is in such good condition and you can get so close to it. On many tours like this I have been on you have to view the details of a room through an outside window or from far behind a partition. Its clear that you cannot touch things but you can really get your face close enough to see all the fine details and it helps you drift into trails of magical thoughts as you imagine yourself growing up with the family through the 20th century.
If you head to the North Shore of MN make sure you pay a visit to Gleensheen!
I was lucky enough to be invited by Explore Minnesota to be one of their ten day Minnesotans (see more: http://www.exploreminnesota.com/travel-topics/ten-day-minnesotans/) and share with the world my journey exploring through their luscious state in the mid-west US.
My route took me along the “North Shore” of Lake Superior all the way down to Minneapolis via a quick stop in Grand Rapids.
We started the trip with a visual bang as we woke in a cabin (http://www.gunflint.com/) at the side of the peaceful Gunflint Lake. From here we took a short drive to the edges of the Boundary Waters and took part in an epic 5 hour kayak trip though beautiful connect lakes. It’s sheer beauty meant we just had to stop from time to time to take it all in and take pictures.
One evening the waters were so still on Gunflint Lake that we took paddle boards out for what felt like miles and managed to paddle out over into Canada (we wanted to believe anyway!).
From Gunflint we spent a few days in the quaint town of Grand Marais. Here eating incredible seafood, locally brewed beer, custard icecream and “world’s best” doughnuts. This town has such a nice pace and the sunsets around the beaches and lighthouses are super pretty. We managed to go out in a Schooner boat one day and got a taste of Lake Superior for the first time.
On the way from Grand Marais down to Duluth we stopped at serene white beaches, hike on national park trails and visited the Temperance Falls and the Split Rock Lighthouse.
Duluth is the perfect base to explore the southern part of Lake Superior and its home to some famous chocolates, smoked fish and, again, beer. Its got an “up and coming” and exciting and young buzz about it. After a hot day exploring we did a fair share of brewery hopping. My favourite being the Canal Park Brewing company and the Vikre Distillery (perfect wooden interior for the making of great photos!).
The last days were spent merrily in Minneapolis. I can totally see why this city gets voted highly in best quality of life polls. The city is big but you can get around easily, there is a great relaxed vibe, people are friendly, there is a great coffee and beer scene and there is an immense amount of nature on your doorstep. One day we went from our hotel down town to canoeing on lakes within thirty minutes. I could easily see myself living here in the future... perhaps just over summer though, not sure I could do those winters!
