If you're under 18 and doing indie audio drama - I love and support you but please watch out for people taking advantage of you! The AD space is as a whole really lovely, but there are bad apples here and they can be very charismatic.
Some red flags to look out for:
- an adult showrunner whose cast and crew is mostly minors
- any showrunner who demands a lot of your time for no pay
- any showrunner who acts unprofessionally and/or crosses boundaries, especially in DMs
- frankly, any cast or crew member who acts unprofessionally and pushes boundaries, especially in DMs, especially especially if they're an adult
- literally anyone trying to get personal info or pictures from you
- any showrunner who keeps starting projects and never finishing any
I say this not to scare anyone but rather so you keep your guard up and trust your gut. You're responsible for your own online safety, and yes you still need online safety in audio drama spaces.
I think the problem is everyone sees dystopian movies as "here's how you can be a hero once the world goes to shit" instead of "hey. hey it would be fucked up if the world went to shit. maybe don't let that happen."
Hi hi, as that wizard show now is getting an audio book series, just a reminder that there are so many people in the queer space making audio drama for free that’s amazing so please go support those, instead of the terrible wizard woman who’s literally funding to make trans people’s lives worse.
Twelvelms is very much a response to That Wizard Series, so if you're feeling mad about it and you also miss some of the vibes, it might be the show for you. It's about a magical university and it's a critique of systems of power.
what if instead of the mountain goats it was the mountain crabs and in no children they said claw in unlovable claw. what about that. you fucking asshole
40k is way too much to ask for a podcast.
I don't know what to tell you, anon. 40k is the amount we need.
Last Season cost 23k to produce. It was six episodes (as we footed the costs for the pilot as a proof of concept) and the crowfunding for that 23k is very publicly documented. This season is 4 episodes longer than S1, with increased cast and admin feeds, plus the 10% taken by Kickstarter before we even begin. This number doesn't come out of nowhere.
We offer a more detailed breakdown on the full Kickstarter page, but for a preview of the costs involved, and where they're going:
Unfortunately neither Fio or myself are in the position to swallow or foot the costs of Season 2 ourselves. We were able to finance the pilot last year thanks to savings. Now, we can barely afford groceries.
There is also no cost a creative project "should" or "shouldn't" be. This is the amount we require, after careful negotiation and discussion with our cast and crew, to pay our team for their labour. We aren't backed by a studio or a network, we have no outside sponsors, and no arts funding to help us.
Another podcast may require less, another might require more. This isn't a one-size-fits-all industry, and we aren't asking you, specifically, anon, to hand us the full amount. We're stating the amount we need to continue, and hoping enough people like what we've been able to produce so far that they're willing to give us enough small amounts to reach that target.
We hope at least that what we were able to produce in season one proves that we can do what we promise with our budget, in a good time-frame, to a quality result.
Oh, captain, let's make a deal
Where we both say the things that we both really feel
I feel scared and I'm starting to sink
And I only sink deeper the deeper I think
