I'm a university English major. I'm a writer. Media literacy and literary analysis is kinda my jam. I know AFTG is pulpy and nonsensical and problematic. But I'll be dammed if Neil and Andrew aren't one of the best written couples I've ever read. Their relationship is so compelling in its unexpected tenderness and emotional complexity, its defiance of the odds.
Even Neil's friendship with the foxes! They refuse to let him disappear. By holding onto him, by rallying behind him, they make him tangible. They make him real. It is cathartic to see Neil find himself through his connection to others.
It is always powerful when love triumphs over fear. That is the crux of this narrative, and it keeps us coming back every time.
riko, about to die: you played me like a fiddle
neil: fiddlers are actually difficult to play. i played you like the cheap kazoo you are
wymack before the banquet: i hope you'll behave this time
neil, already marching to riko: hope you're not hoping too hard
"Neil can't drive" this, "Neil drives like a psychopath" that, "Speeding down the highway" whatever. WRONG. YOU'RE ALL WRONG
Neil literally learned how to drive on the run. They were actively hiding and trying to be as unnoticed as possible. There is no way my boy ever ignored a traffic law.
Like, this is Crime 101, when you have something illegal going on in your car you drive under the speed limit, on your lane, no wrong turns, using the blinkers, do not even touch a phone. Getting stopped by a police officer because you were going at 10 over the speed limit when you have 3 different guns on you and you may be actively bleeding out of a stab wound is the stupidest way to get caught ever.
So what I'm saying is, Neil drives the Maz at exactly the speed limit, using blinkers, no speeding, ever, no sharp turns, hands perfectly at 2 & 9 position.
It drives Andrew fucking bonkers.
andrew the more he learnt about neil
This one literally doesn’t make sense but I wanted to draw him in this lighting.
neils decision to play for the foxes even though it would get him killed wasnt stupid, it was desperately fucking sad
five million dollars didnt even last him and his mom ten years. how much longer did he really have, going on the way he did. he wasnt dying for exy he was weighing the option of spending a year doing something that made him feel alive or spending five not being dead but feeling like it. look me in the eye and say that making that calculation was stupid for someone who had nothing left to live for.
he called himself stupid because there was a part of him (that spoke in a voice that sounded a lot like his mother) that believed that survival was the only thing that mattered. but stupid would have been making those decisions not knowing what the consequences would be. neil knew how bad it would be and he still chose it because the alternative was so fucking miserable that those consequences were actually better. he walked into "bad decisions" with his eyes wide open not because he was too stupid to understand what he was doing but because he was so goddamn lonely that survival didnt matter anymore.
he may not have been actively suicidal but he didnt care about being alive because being alive had never been anything other than pain. and that makes this was everything he ever wanted, everything he ever needed, and he was never letting go just make me want to launch myself into the sun
Neil: I think I’m falling for you
Andrew: Then get up
i recently did a giveaway on twitter for reaching 5k followers, this is for the 2nd place winner!
i like the thought that andrew can walk up to neil at any moment and put his chin on his shoulder 💔
imagine being david wymack at a banquet chilling with the other coaches when one of the kids in your team comes to tell you the mafia kid punched the other mafia kid in the face
