5th Atelier Tutorial: No-Pattern Circle Dress
Here we go again! With summer almost upon us, I figured it’d be nice to share this simple mini-dress for something refreshing our dolls can slip into. ^_^
As usual, it’s probably too wordy for its own good, so please excuse me if things get confusing. ~_~

Notes: My mum picked up two monster high dolls for only £5 the pair :) Such a bargain! The other one is Abbey, who’ll I’ll photograph later. It’s a tough choice, but I think Draculaura might be my favourite character in the webisodes.

Finished face-up :) My second ever attempt.
I’m still not so sure about it, especially the eyebrows, and this pic doesn’t do it any justice either but thought I’d share it anyway. I do like the totally black eyes though. I think they sit somewhere between cute and ominous lol.
The idea behind it was a butterfly or a colourful bug, Perhaps I should give her some antennae….?
Cuteeee! And she looks great now, but adding antennae would also look very nice and help to emphasize the “bug” thing. :)

Yes, I think I will add antennae after all. If I use wire, I can probably fit them to her head through the hair holes :D

Hey :) Thanks for your question.
To re-paint the face I first remove the original paint with nail varnish remover and cotton wool buds. Then I spray the face with a sealer, to give myself an easier canvas to work with. So far I have only done 2 face re-paints ever, so my knowledge is pretty limited, but I used coloured pencils to do both. (My favourite pencils are Karisma colour by Berol, but I know others recommend water colour pencils as they wont stain the face if you make a mistake and need to remove it. I found that when I wanted to remove some of what I had done, it didn't work out so well, so I think I will try water soluble pencils another time.) It's very important to keep sealing the face with spray at each stage, other wise if you make a mistake it'll be really hard to fix. For example if I colour the whites of the eyes first, I will then spray and seal my work before continuing with the next layer. For my pink-haired doll I also used white acrylic paint to add highlights. I intended to buy some sort of paint on gloss varnish to give the eyes and lips more shine, but as of yet I haven't tried this.
The sealer I use is Testors Dulcote, which is one of only two brands I know of that is suitable for soft plastic barbie heads. The one I see other people use most often is called Mr. Super clear, but I have never tried that myself, as it is not as easily available in my country. For the hair, I don't dye it. I remove the old hair and replace it :) To do this I carefully remove the dolls head (easy enough if it is a soft head) trim the hair down as short as possible and then use tweezers on the inside of the head, rolled around to remove the glue. This is the most difficult bit and can be pretty tough on your hands so make sure to remove as much as you can with scissors first to make it easier. I then use a re-root tool or a needle to thread in new hair. Afterwards I spread fabric glue on the inside of the head with a cotton wool bud.
The hair I use is from my little customs, which I shall link you to. The site also has some great tutorials on re-rooting, much better than I could explain here. I also bought my needles and re-root tool from there.

My most recent finished custom, Iris. I made the dress myself too :) As you can see, she still has some bad damage to her hand from a childhood incident involving a cat, but I'll get around to fixing that another time.
Getting to work :) Decided to go for design number one in the end. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the saran hair from MLC is so lovely :) The sugarless gum pink was left over from a previous project, but the violet iris just arrived yesterday. Such a lovely colour!
I have never used Nylon doll hair. Has anyone else used it? Which do you prefer?

If anyone is interested, she is a 2001 "Spot Scene" Barbie. I've always thought that pale white hair and pale pink lipstick together make her look a bit washed out. So, make-over time! :D
Also, being a childhood doll, she has suffered some pretty horrific (cat induced) damage to her hand and has paint smears on her legs, so I will hopefully be doing something about that later on too. (I'm thinking probably tattoos and prosthetic limbs.)
Some designs for my next customising endeavor :) At the moment I'm quite liking the half and half, but that could change. The purple I've ordered is more of a pastel violet, but I only have half my pencils with me at the moment so I had to colour it darker in the designs. On a side note, does anyone else still use Karisma pencils?
Nostalgic Musings...
Sometimes I miss getting barbies from obscure relatives on birthdays. When you grow up you tend to get money or make-up or toiletries instead. Does anyone else get that feeling?
Useful info for any Moxie Teenz fans out there. I've already read in a few places that Ken shoes are a good fit, but I also just discovered that Wee 3 Friends shoes are a good fit too! What's better is, if you happen to own a set of these dolls, they come in packs of three, so that's three pairs of shoes! (or in the case of the set I have, 3 pairs of boots and 3 sets of ice skates. Even better :D)
These dolls use the same body mold as what's-her-face, so I figure what's-her-face shoes would be worth trying too, although I haven't tried them yet. The what's-her-face doll I have came with hard plastic shoes, not like the wee 3 friends soft plastic though, so wee-3-friends is probably the safer option.

Work in progress! Not so sure about her so far, but if it all turns out to be a disaster at least it'll be a learning experience :)
I was going for a sort of bug/butterfly look, with the beetle black eyes and the colourful splodges all around.
My other My Scene Nolee, Chang, sporting a handmade fleece jumper. Considering I must have made this outfit at least ten years ago now, It's not all that bad, but I like to think my sewing has improved since then! Still, things you made when you were younger are so nostalgic :)

My mum sewed all the little beads into her hair when I was little, so she's extra special :) I'm a bit worried because it's fraying a little, so I'll have to see what I can do to fix it. Even if I have to super glue the thread to her head, those precious little beads are going nowhere!
I'm surprised My Scene wasn't more popular. At the time everybody else was mega into Bratz instead. Personally, I've always thought Bratz were a bit funny looking! (although the Bratzillaz are nicer) Anyway, I don't know anybody apart from me and my sister who had a My Scene doll.
Did anyone else have one? Does anyone else collect them?

Stargirl, named after a character from one of my favourite books. She's had her hair in a french plait for at least five years, so now it's lovely and wavy (although i did have to tie it around her face for a week to get it to lay nicely!)
I made the little beaded lizard necklace myself, years ago :) I must have made so many of them. I occasionally find them hiding in drawers and boxes and things.
I finally got the rest of my childhood dolls down from the loft :) Lots of exciting guys and girls. There's an entire bag full of My Scene, Barbie, Ken, Sindy, Whats-her-face, wee 3 friends, mini baby born and a Hermione Granger doll :D
I'm hoping to nurse them all back to health and customise some of them too.
