G3 Cupid Restyle
Long time no see 😘
This is the reroot I did over the weekend--yes, yes, it's just about the same as her original hair color. However. Not only is the original fiber, so common to early '70s Malibu dolls, weirdly thick and dry, but this particular head's hair had been cut very very badly (right at the scalp along the part) so was unsalvageable as it was.
The last time I rerooted one of these 1970s P.J. heads, I used a fantasy color. Fantasy hair colors are certainly my usual aesthetic, but my current Mod Barbie Mood is a little more accepting of "natural" colors. I don't have many natural colors in my hair stash, though, and, what I do have, was all cut off of other dolls (probably before they got fantasy hair reroots.) The only pale blond I had was kanekalon. Kanekalon salvaged from another doll's head is a mess to work with.
Salvaged hair reroots also always end up a bit short, so I was planning to put the hair into pigtails, then curl them to hide the odd lengths. Once I twisted some of the hair up to get it out of the way, though, I changed the plan to messy space buns.
I made the shirt by enlarging the pattern piece layout from a pattern I use a lot to make shirts for The Child and me, although I did make some changes--mostly I wanted to see how the two-part collar would work out at this size. Normally, I "interface" doll collars with fusible web/Stitch Witchery, but this time I tried using actual lightweight interfacing. In the future, I'll be going back to the Stitch Witchery. I also forgot that things with collars need more room at the back for a doll neck than human necks need, so it's sitting a bit weird. Overall I'm happy with it, though!
I've always made my doll jeans with the opening in the front, at the fly, like real jeans. That usually ends up unpleasantly bulky, though, so I decided I'd try moving the opening to the back. It works fine, but, y'know.....inaccurate XD
The whole outfit might be a mockery of current trends, riffing on "Blond hair? How imaginative."
Nefera Reroot
Can't tell you how long I've waited for this shade of opaque teal saran to be available from a dealer! It's been used on dolls going all the way back to the 90's but is most known for being Nefera's shade match (both g1 and g3, though g3's is blended with another shade) and it has never been sold by a doll hair dealer, ever, no matter how many times I've begged lol And then last month I find out that Shimmerlocks finally managed to get it! I ordered enough of it to reroot all of my Nefera dolls, and first up is my Signature Nefera since she's the best one. Finally she has no tinsel and no glue! A dream come true. Shimmerlocks has been killing it with saran this last year, they have so many shades that have never been sold by dealers before, including some custom shades that have only ever been used by Mattel. (yes it does pick up very blue on my camera, you'll just have to trust when I say it's an exact match to Nefera teal lol)
My first MH G3 reroot is done. I’m really looking forward to doing a whole body repaint, the sculptural details on her hands and ears and legs are really pretty to me.
My rerooted Rapunzel! I got her on flea market for like, 20 złoty. Her hair was in really rough condition so I fixed it! Why are there no Rapunzel dolls with ACTUALLY long hair?!
I hadn't done a doll rehair/reroot in AGES but got this Totally Hair Christie head from @hellodollstuff with a hair cut so she needed it.
I was going to get nylon microbraids from Shimmer Locks but then saw that Dolly Hair (legitimately under new management this time) has Kanekalon. I thought doll grade Kanekalon was no longer in production so I have no idea how they have it.
If you don't know, Mattel used Kanekalon a lot on dolls in the 90's and early 2ks, and that includes the Totally Hair Barbie line.
It's not the best fiber for ultra long haired dolls, IMO. Nylon or Saran are better, mostly because doll grade Kanekalon is ultra fine and fragile.
Anyway I ordered 3 packs of their 32in length in Kohl Brown and only used two.
I did not enjoy working with this. Even though I was doing tension method, the fastest method, this still took me about 8 hours because I had to keep stopping and brushing out the hank of hair. Very grabby, and it would dry up quickly if I misted it to keep it better under control.
It also feels rather dry and I haven't washed and conditioned her hair, yet. I want to give the glue more time to dry before getting it wet.
I only have 3 of the dolls from the line: Brunette Barbie, Blond Barbie, and now Christie. None of them are default or even on their default bodies. I don't have their dresses or any accessories other than their earrings.
Since they all have altered hairstyles anyway, I didn't give her bangs or a parting line of any sort. She doesn't seem to need it.
I didn't trim up her hair, either, so it's excessively long for now.
I also have the fashion sense of a doorknob so don't @ me. If the colors make good happy, then it's good fashion to me.
The long-haired Barbies shelf is getting crowded.
Bratz doll custom!!!! Reroot & repaint by me 🥰 she kind of looks like Krysta & Lela! I'm sooooo proud with how she turned out 💕
Bullets Draculaura is finally finished and is available for sale! I'm asking $200usd +shipping. She was rerooted by hand, her cloths are hand stitched, and the coffin is hand painted. If your interested, DM for the eBay link.
More MCR x Monster High dolls to come!
