@iseejuan
i am struggling.
I have lost all my income, I’m a full time student having no luck looking for a job, I haven’t eaten in two days, I’ve had to send my son to his dad’s house on my week just so he can be fed and looked after, I am struggling. I hate to ask for help on the internet, but I have no familial support and I don’t have any friends. It’s so hard, and I just genuinely want to eat tonight. My paypal is paypal.me/bpdmum
If you want to message me instead, like, even friendly support will help me. Everything’s just so hard and idk what to do.
Thank you
Cultural appropriation is not real.
Cultural appropriation is an anthropological and legal concept supported by decades of research and there are tens of thousands scholarly books and articles discussing it in academic fields as varied as anthropology, sociology, law, political science, social psychology and philosophy : http://bit.ly/2rQMHb0
Cultural appropriation is “taking intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from someone else’s culture without permission … when the source community is a minority group that has been oppressed or exploited in other ways.” - from Who Owns Culture?: Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law by Fordham law professor Susan Scafidi
It exists no matter how much you put your fingers in your ears and scream like a petulant child.
Also, the melting pot theory is no longer taught because it is inherently assimilationist, the salad or stew metaphor is what is used now.

Let me rephrase this. Cultural appropriation is not a thing because people can style their hair whatever way they want, wear whatever they want, do their makeup however they want because no one owns it. If anything it should be flattering to other cultures if one culture is learning and expressing their love of the other. However if one is doing it to make fun of the other; that’s not cultural appropriation either. That’s called racism.
I feel like people just look to cause drama where ever they go and just make problems where there isn’t instead of focusing on problems that actually exist.
People can still style their hair however they want, wear whatever they want, do makeup whatever they want. Just like we can say whatever we want about their choices of hairstyle, clothing or makeup, and identify it for what it is.
Clearly you have never heard of cultural patrimony or intangible cultural heritage. Members of a culture collectively own their cultural traditions (both tangible and intangible), ancestral human remains, historical artifacts and national/natural monuments. That’s why the Navajo nation was able to get a trademark & copyrights on their name some iconic traditions and iconography. This is why indigenous Mexican weavers forming unions and taking collective legal action against Isabel marant, who plagiarized their designs.
You don’t get to decide for someone else what is or isnt flattering or harmful. You can’t claim to “love and respect” another culture and then simultaneously ignore, dismiss or mock the members of that culture when they’re telling you something is wrong. Then your entitlement and hypocrisy is obvious & youve shown you don’t actually give a shit about the culture, you just want to use the pretty traditions with no thought to the people they came from. Wanting to dress up as a Native American and then mocking and dismissing native Americans when they talk about dressing up as native being something that negatively affects them? That’s also racism. Cultural approbation itself increases discrimination:
“Two ways in which cultural appropriation can be harmful are easily identified. The first sort of harm is violation of a property right … The second sort of harm is an attack on the viability or identity of the cultures or their members. Appropriation that undermines a culture in these ways would certainly cause devastating and clearly wrongful harm to members of the culture … Other acts of appropriation potentially leave members of a culture exposed to discrimination, poverty and lack of opportunity.” - from The Ethics of Cultural Appropriation (edited by Young and Brunk)
No one cares what you feel when the facts say otherwise. Marginalized people are not going to base what they think is important or a problem based on how you *feel* when their life experiences and the scholarly research show otherwise. Rephrase all you like, you’re still wrong.
‘rephrase all you like, you’re still wrong.’ I can say the same to you. Culture is such a mixed bag that most anyone can tell anyone that they are culturally appropriating someone’s culture. Everything is from someone’s culture that if we stopped using all the things that we didn’t single handedly create we’d be left with nothing. That’s the joy of living in a world with trade and experiencing other cultures.
Say what you want but I’ll never believe in cultural appropriation. It’s just not a thing. Racism yes but not cultural appropriation.
Then you you’re doubly wrong because you’ve just proven that you fundamentally misunderstand what cultural appropriation is, and shockingly even after I provided you with a definition. It is not any time someone uses something from another culture, go reread the definition in my first reblog. You’re talking about a completely different concept called cultural exchange, which is two people from different cultures willingly share or trade with one another.
And no, you could not say the same to me because your entire argument is based on how you FEEL whereas I’ve provided several reliable sources by experts to support my claims. No ones cares what someone feels about something they are so obviously uneducated on.
Cept cultural appropriation is literally how someone feels? But at this point it’s futile to try to talk to you about this. It’s like talking to a brick wall when someone is so set on the way they think. As for your sources you can quote whoever you want, doesn’t mean you’re right. People quote the bible all the time and they’re still wrong.
Cultural appropriation has nothing to do with how anyone feels, it has a specific legal definition I’ve already provided to you. If I never cared or had zero negative feelings about people appropriating my culture that does not change that it would still harm me and others in my culture via “discrimination, poverty and lack of opportunity.” Again you prove you have literally zero knowledge of the subject you’re discussing.
I’m not set in the way I think at all, you’re just projecting your own feelings onto me. If you had reliable evidence to prove that cultural appropriation doesn’t exist or is harmless, I’d be more than willing to re-examine my position and change my mind. You expressing your emotions regarding a topic you obviously don’t know anything about is the opposite of reliable evidence.
Are you really saying citing research by experts using the scientific method is the same as citing the Bible? I sincerely hope not.
Why even continue replying if I’m so wrong then?
I dunno, maybe because you might actually learn something new? Most people re-examine their preconceived notions when provided with new information.
Yeah no. As someone who is white and been told I can’t have dreads, I can’t wear this, can’t do that yet so no harm in doing so…I’ll stick to my beliefs. And you’re more than welcome to stick to yours. ✌
girl….you just got told all the harms in doing so and yet you wanna whine bc nobody wanted to see a mess on your white head…what’s worse, being told that you shouldn’t misuse the power you have belonging to a dominant group, or belonging to a minority group that is continuously subjected to unequal treatment? what’s worse, getting to pick and choose different aspects of other cultures behind the safety of your whiteness, or having to live with the mistreatment you always will face being a poc? you think you can just wear dreads to love and respect a hairstyle or whatever, but there are actual ppl out there who when they wear dreads, something from their ACTUAL culture, face mistreatment, racism, and discrimination. that’s why they said cultural appropriation leads to racism and discrimination dummy. they provided you with facts and a logical argument and you just showed your ass and added a peace sign for added effect.
Lmao at all the people being butt hurt cuz of a hairstyle…which I look great with by the way. @feels-by-the-foot what do you think of this mess?
Why do people make threads this long, when they could have said they don’t care and be done with it???
This is why white people just get cursed out the first time and we keep it moving. They still won’t care despite being given while essays explaining why what they’re doing is harmful.
what a petulant fucking child. (except children are actually willing to learn new things)
