So let’s get one thing cleared
Now that Senna is released as a character remember that ANYONE can cosplay her. It’s not cultural appropriation, it’s not racist, it’s just cosplaying as a character you like. If anyone says ‘you have a lot of choices to choose from’ so does the other person.
You can cosplay whoever the hell you want. Don’t bully someone because you don’t like who they’re cosplaying. They’re not hurting anyone. If they want to cosplay with dreads, let them. (Aloy got away with it in Horizon Zero Dawn and I didn’t hear shit about it.) If they want to use makeup to darken their skin let them.
Cosplay is supposed to be about getting together as a community and expressing our creativity. Don’t ruin it over silly things.
“Makeup to darken their skin” girl wtf is this black face excuse bs post? If white people wanna cosplay senna of course they can but they don’t need to pull up with black face. I’m pretty sure the heavily racist Jim Crow era isn’t just some fucking “silly thing” for the people that have suffered from it. If you’re a white person that’s so keen on keeping 10000% accuracy then there’s several pasty whitey champions to pick from. Dress as her, quote her and have her props and whatnot but don’t pull up in black face, it’s simple really.
See you’re the type of person that makes others feel bad about who they wanted to go as. A twitch streamer-Karupups-cosplayed a POC because she wanted and it actually well done. There are plenty of models and actors who have done the same.
Wikipedia’s definition is this “ Blackface is a form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person.”
So you know what caricature means “ a picture, description, or imitation of a person in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect. “
A lot of people don’t get that Black Face is used to make fun of POC. Darkening your skin tone to fit the character better is not. Also it takes a lot of talent to do it right.
The main thing I’m annoyed as is that POC can cosplay white characters and get away with it. But if someone who isn’t POC cosplay ethnic characters they get belittled. So here is the ultimatum: If you don’t want white people to cosplay ethnic people then don’t cosplay as any white person.
It’s simple really.
You’re just entitled. Don’t put on black face. When black people cosplay white or Asian characters they don’t fucking paint their skin white and tilt their eyes or some shit. If you can’t cosplay a character from another ethnic group than your own without using a way too dark foundation for yourself then maybe you shouldn’t cosplay. White idiots being stuck up on cosplaying black champs and characters as if they don’t have a million more white ones to pick from is a comedy in itself. Anyways here’s examples of how to cosplay black characters without “needing” to do black face.
Cute sailor moon cosplay that is creatively done and you immediately recognize who this is! She didn’t need to paint her face white.
Great Pyke cosplay by a white dude. Did he darken his skin? No. Why? BECAUSE HE DOESNT NEED TO ITS A FICTIONAL CHARACTER U CAN ADJUST TO FITTING YOU AND YOU DONT “HAVE TO” TOE AROUND A MASSIVE RACISTS ERA THAT HAS LIVED ON TILL TODAY.
Look at that Illaoi!! And once again, a white person!! And no black face!! Because it’s not needed! Because why risk making people traumatized by hundreds of years of racism just bc ur entitled?? You have no argument that’s strong enough to explain to me why someone would have dire need to darken their skin bc a fictional character has it.
Are you going to tell me you have no clue who she’s cosplaying bc she hasn’t painted her whole body in white? You have no clue that this is jinx? None?
It is simple. Get over yourself. Don’t do black face. Stop being an entitled asshole.
Okay, I get what you say. Those are all well done and beautiful cosplays. I just don’t like when people play white characters then yell at us when we cosplay black characters. Honestly I just want things to be equal and I’m sorry I came off racist. To get how I feel listen to White Boy and Politically Incorrect by Tom MacDonald.
There’s always going to be someone that’s extra sensitive, when it comes to black people you have to remember the history of almost the whole world. It makes sense that some are extra protective of the few black characters they have and I don’t think it’s worth arguing with these people. But the general consensus is that as long you stay respectful and don’t do black face you’re welcome do cosplay any character!
Well thank you for the brief lesson and explanation. I know I won’t truly understand everything since it hasn’t affected me. There’s a part of me that people wont truly understand as well. The extra protective people of their characters make sense as well.
Again thank you for explaining things and I agree as long as no one is getting hurt it shouldn’t matter who you cosplay.
PS: Thank you for showing me those awesome cosplays, I’m going to look into them more.
