If you’ve taken physics, you’ve probably heard the saying “x and y are independent”.

A simple example: it takes 1 second for a ball to drop 9.8 meters. If you were to stand 9.8 meters off the ground and throw the ball directly to your left or right, it would still take 1 second to drop! Thats because up and down (the y axis) is completely independent from the x axis!

That said, the guy backflipping would still take the same amount of time to flip even if he was shoved to the right!

You're concept is right but I have a minor quibble. It'd take 1 second for a ball to drop 4.9m as the ball's velocity would not be 9.8m/s until the end of its first second of acceleration.

d = vt + (1/2)at2 initial velocity (v) = 0m/s time (t) = 1s acceleration (a) = 9.8m/s/s

d=(0)(1) + (1/2)(9.8)(1) d=4.9m
