this is my contribution to the conversation ❤️
“Well hey there mother mine Your kids are sick but they’re gonna be just fine I said possibly not if you keep raising them this way You’re just leading them to die, oh your disbelief and dismay.” — Declan McKenna
declan mckenna + music videos (pt. 2)
One thing I like is that there's two black girls on here. I know Amber is a supporting character but she's pretty much in every episode. I don't know how that's still rare but it is and both girls are very very different.
But that's what drew me in. ALL these characters are very different.
I definitely appreciate that the dark-skinned, nerdy, awkward, black girl, with the glasses and tight fro is shown to be desirable. Baby gurh has two love interests. And you're probably thinking, "she doesn't need to be desired by boys to be valid", slow down boo this is just about black women but especially dark-skinned black women being considered undesirable by being the furthest thing from the European beauty standard.
I say this with no exaggeration but in my humble opinion, in one season (so far) Get Even was everything Pretty Little Liars tried to be but couldn't in seven seasons.
I think this was accomplished by
keeping the drama between the teenagers
age-appropriate love interests
no unnecessary characters
super tight script work, very focused writing, clarity
fully realized characters
writers writing teenagers as they are and not as some adult fantasy version of teenagers or as stereotypical misconceptions of teenagers
PACING
Every character you root for is immediately flawed and relatable and well-established. We know these girls so well by the end of the first episode. Enough questions are answered to satisfy you moment to moment but not enough that you can stop watching. Brilliant. Lovely. Lovely writing.
There almost no-if not zero- scenes that don't include one of the four girls. Which is kind of amazing. There are several moving pieces here but THEY move them. They're in control. They lose control. They get it back. Man, what a ride!
we are DGM. we don’t get mad. we get even
Callum McGregor and Sephy Hadley - Noughts and Crosses He would protect Sephy. I just know that.
Noughts and Crosses (Series 1) “The point of the story is to turn white supremacy on its head and use African culture to explain what it’s like to live in a world where the culture is predominantly white. It was bittersweet because of the story, but it was also the first time I’ve ever seen African culture be so bold and loud on TV, which was phenomenal.” “I was really excited to play a young black girl who is privileged and has the world on her side and is so protected. Having the character then learn about the world and become conscious of the way people are treated was just so much fun. The journey of Sephy is just beautiful to me. It was fascinating to play someone who feels like an outsider among their own people and turns her back on her own blood to be of help to those living a much harder life. I was so impressed by Sephy. I think more people around the world should take after her and do the work to help those who are oppressed.”
“A love story is a story that I think almost anyone can relate to, a love story is universal and I think that allows audiences to really invest in the world we have created and pick up on the racial injustices and social injustices the characters face based on the colour of people’s skin. I think a love story gives people a way into that.” - Masali Baduza
Noughts and Crosses...just wow. What a wow.
This is the adaptation 12 year old me has been waiting for all this time. Watching it has just made my heart feel so full.
They thought of EVERYTHING. The plaster scene. Kay-lem. 'You might even get some colour'. 'You know they drink.' THE BLANKER SCENE.
And the production design is so meticulous and thoughtfully crafted. The landscapes, the statues, even the design of the McGregor house.
Jack Rowan is such an endearing Callum. Masali Baduza is not only possibly the most beautiful person I've ever seen, she plays Sephy with such strength and emotional intelligence. The casting is flawless. Special mention to Josh Dylan and Paterson Joseph for their talent and brilliance. They all made me feel so much.
I could talk about this show all day. I hope this gets a second season. I hope people watch it and learn from it. I hope, I hope, I hope...
There are people who think the new Noughts and Crosses series on BBC One - based on a series of books by Malorie Blackman - is anti-white, like imagine being that fucking stupid and disgusting, I can’t 🤦🏼
For anyone who hasn’t read the book, Noughts and Crosses is basically set in a world where white people are discriminated against and black people are the ones in higher positions of power. It’s a love story between a Cross (black) girl and a Nought (white) boy, a bit like Romeo and Juliet, who can’t be together because of racism and society. It’s written by a wonderful black author called Malorie Blackman, who holds an OBE and was a Children’s Laureate from 2013 to 2015.
I am white, let’s just put that out there, and I read the books as a child - I was probably about twelve when I read them for the first time. No, it is NOT anti-white propaganda. If anything, it highlights how ridiculous racism is when you reverse the roles - like how homophobia is highlighted as ridiculous and insane when you reverse it so that heterosexual people are the ones hated and bullied (see: “Love is All You Need?” On YouTube). I loved these books and am planning on rereading them at some point - if anything, the books made me more open-minded and aware of more things in our society.
Here’s the trailer, please feel free to watch it and spread some love on it by liking it or commenting good things:
So yeah, please watch Noughts and Crosses when it comes out - first episode on BBC1 is this Thursday at 9pm. I promise you won’t regret it!
The first episode of Noughts + Crosses was SO GOOD OMG
I’m a white person, and the book really made me think - but the tv series has made me think even more by being visual about it.
The fact that the plasters are by default made to match darker skin, meaning it’s a stark contrast on Callum’s white skin, Sephy starting to understand that she’s privileged and not to believe what the news is saying, police brutality, the way that clothing/hair/architecture has changed to adapt to the fact that in this world we were colonized by Africa/Aprica (I think that was the name they used).
When you switch everything around, it becomes startlingly clear how privileged we white folk are. The fact that plasters are made to match our skin, the fact that IRL white police attack unarmed black youths, our clothes/hair/buildings clearly reflect European colonization. I never even realized all of this.
And no, contrary to what the middle aged conservative whites on twitter and YouTube are saying, it’s not anti-white - this show isn’t making me ashamed to be white, it’s educating me. If anything, said conservative racist whites make me ashamed to be white.
Also, moment of appreciation for how gorgeous Sephy is AND the fact that they let her have her NATURAL hair.
I love this series already - the other 5 episodes are on BBC iplayer so I’m going to take a bath before watching the rest, but god damn I love it already and want to reread the book.
I want you. I really want you. You’re the only one who sees me. Callum and Sephy - Noughts and Crosses

this series keeps getting crazier! and I applaud Leo for his acting skills and ability to drown me in empathy by crying.
If you haven’t yet, watch Clique right away.
It’s a British YA show that is one of the best things on the air at the moment. Can’t really go into plot details because it’s one of those shows, but the thing that makes it stand out from the crowd is that it has predominantly female cast (in S1 anyway), stunning production values, and the showrunner is a woman who tackles the topic of gender politics in a way that I haven’t really seen before. Honestly, it’s a ridiculously compelling watch, and it only gets better in season 2!!
Finally got around to watching this show. Such an underrated gem with an incredble cast. A must-watch during this lockdown period.
