I started writing this post back in 2021 when I first watched The Tudors, but never finished it; when I finished Season 1, I really wanted to talk about a certain scene in the final episode - there’s a lot to talk about with the show and the time period (especially regarding religion and women etc), but at the time I wanted to talk about this scene in the sense of the cinematography/parallels/music. I actually did have many bullet points about all of this that I intended to discuss.
Now that Sam Neill has passed away, though, I honestly just want to share this scene to appreciate his performance in The Tudors even though he was in it only for one season - obviously he was most well known for the Jurassic series (another of my favourite things of all time) but I want to take a moment to appreciate his role here.
⚠️ TW for suicide, blood, religion, there’s some performers pretending to be devils/Satan/there’s some imagery of hell I guess? ⚠️
Disclaimer: I screenrecorded this video from a dodgy website and uploaded it to this post years ago so I hope it works. Just in case, you can also see this scene on YouTube here and a slightly edited but higher definition version can be found at the five minute mark in this video.
So, any historical inaccuracy aside, this is probably one of my favourite scenes in the Tudors; regardless of what I think of Thomas Wolsey, I loved Sam Neill as an actor, he was great in everything he did and this was no different.
