Do you know the best sci-fi manga-to-anime adaptations? Thank you for putting up with this!
Sure! Instead of just manga-to-anime, though, I listed other types of anime adaptation too (from games, novels and whatnot). Of course, the list is ordered by my personal judgment, but you can consider it as no particular order too.
I gotta add that I wouldn’t dare say the ones I deem as the best are the definite deal, but here are my choices:
1. Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019)
The first anime was good as a standalone, but went with its own narrative using the canon characters and created a wildly different story. In contrast, the remake followed the novels almost word-by-word and the animation turned out great despite the drastic change in art style. Sadly, the time limit of each episode resulted in cutting off bits of the story that deepen the characters’ personalities and their backstories, and a few characters never did make it into the screen. In my opinion, the novels are still better, but the adaptation did justice to them.
2. Kiseijuu
This one was also done practically word-by-word, but the anime managed to make it far sadder and gave it a more solemn atmosphere than its manga counterpart. The character design adaptations to modern art style were pretty on-point and the animation quality is stellar.
3. Gunnm
Since this one was made in OVA format, there was a lot that had to be cut off from manga to anime in order to fit it into the episodes, and it only covers the first part of the story. Regardless, it still managed to retain the main plot points and the general idea of the original. It was as loyal as could be and the animation was pretty good for the time of its making.
4. Planetes
This one is an example of a magnificently well-done masterpiece. The studio was hand-in-hand with the manga and it went places. The author’s art is extremely beautiful, and going through with it resulted in breathtaking shots. The story, of course, is also amazing.
5. Level E
My memory is a little fuzzy regarding the manga, but the anime did well as far as I can remember when it comes to sticking to the source material. The art style actually isn’t on par the artist’s in my opinion, but the studio tried hard to keep up with it and deserves credit for that. The ambiece was specially good, though it had a less detailed feeling to it.
6. Steins;Gate
I haven’t played the game and don’t really plan to, but a little bit of digging has convinced me that the anime was successful in delivering the story and characters to the viewers. Miyano Mamoru’s performance as Okabe Rintarou in particular was one of the things that helped the initially slow storytelling hit its stride, from what I could see.
7. To Aru Majutsu no Index
I’ve never really touched the novels of this one, but long conversations with people who have both read them and watched the animes have me believing that it’s done a fine job so far. It’s also a very good example of awesome scenery and the background colors are always at the top of their game. All of this goes for related titles too.
8. Seihou Bukyou Outlaw Star
I’m not much of a fan of this one, but the adaptation seems to have been on-point. From what I remember, a lot of the cuts were just unnecessary banter and some comic relief, but I might be mistaken on that as it’s been a very long time since I read/watched it.
9. Sidonia no Kishi
I must admit that the fact this one was made with CGI turns me off, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. That aside, the animators meant well with it and have done justice to the original, as far as I can tell.
10. Fractale
It’s a rarity, but this one actually did better than its manga, in my honest opinion. It fleshed out the characters in a more captivating way and told the story with a more consistent narrative in comparison to the manga’s choppy one. When it started airing, I was seriously taken aback by how outstanding the animation was, because that’s not something you’d expect from a work that wasn’t highly regarded.
