Solo

My solo was a contemporary piece to the song”American Funeral” covered by the Star cast. The dance was meant to be a tribute to everyone wrongfully killed by police officers. Meant to be emotional. I wore a red baseball tee. The red was meant to symbolize the bloodshed. I chose a red background with a little but of white because the dance was meant to be intense. Police officers are shooting unarmed African Americans more and more everyday. The issue is growing especially now that trump is president. I wanted to bring awareness to the issue.

For my source I would use a stitch stuffed animal as my inperation. The movie lio and stitch was mine and my sisters all time favourite sister movie when I was little. (She 8 years older then me). I always pictured myself as Lilo and my sister as Nani. Not only because they were sisters but because of how they acted and how close they were. The movie will always remind me of my sister and how much I love her. I would do a fast paced jazz routine My prop like stated before would be a Stich stuffed animal. I would stay pretty traditional and be dressed in a red dress with white flowers as well as black shorts. My hair would be half up half down pig tails (to simulate youth). I would dance with the doll in my arms as well as have it sitting on downstage right so I could do a couple things without being weighed down by a prop. My song choice is “burning love” by Elvis Presley covered by Wynonna Judd. I chose fast paced jazz because it symbolizes how life is fast paced and never moving. You just keep going and going. Just like the movie, Lilo is seen running around and doing everything and anything. In between hula lessons, surfing, training an alien pet or just flirting with a guy (David) for her sister Nani. Life keeps moving and so would this dance.

Hip hop

I know I just ranted abou Remembrance Day but I’m going to do a super quick rant about hip hop. Again another dance everyone hated. It really sucked to be a full grade 12 class smooshed with a full grade 11 class. It meant no time for our own group dances as grade 12s. Anyway the hip hop sucked and very very kiddish and sloppy.

Remembrance Day

Get ready cause I’m very mad about this dance. Okay for starters the dance was about like soldiers leaving home or something like that. It was not clear. Second, she chose a song that had nothing to do with Remembrance Day and everything to do with stars. AND finally, the grade 12s had no say in anything. The grade 11s had 1 minute and 30 seconds of the dance and the grade 12s had 20 seconds. TWENTY SECONDS. TWENTY SECONDS. LIKE WHAT? WHO DOES THAT? WHY WERE WE IN NONE OF THE DANCE. she was really upset that no one liked the dance at all and when confronted about how the grade 12s only had 20 seconds she didn’t say anything. Plus not to mention that she was angry that none of the grade 12s would go full out and that we never tried. Like uhm maybe it was because we were barely in the dance. I was literally praying for it to snow so we wouldn’t have to preform that dance. It was so awful I wanted to scream. She also had us wearing ALL black. The only reason we wore poppy’s was because the 12s came up with the idea. Then she played it off like it was her idea. Not to mention we didn’t start choreo for it until like November 7th. I don’t know if you can tell but this entire situation made me very angry.

Placement

My placement was with my duet partner Taylor. We chose to do it with the grade ten dance class because we wanted to do a more mature dance. We felt that they would be able to have a lot of fun and execute the hip hop nicely given they have many dancers in that class. We chose to do our placement dance to the song “Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B. We taught half the dance on day one and the other half on day two. We chose to do back to back days because we felt the dancers would have something fun to look forward to for those two days. To my surprise the tens really like the combo we did for them and Ms. Dixon gave us a REALLY nice grade. We did the usual, warm up and then right into choreo. We rotated the lines occasionally to make sure everyone could see and would have a chance to be in the front. Our placement experience wasn’t stressful because the girls (and Reilly) really enjoyed having us teach their class.

Duet

If Im being honest our duet could have been much better than it was. We spent more time working on our placement then we did our actual duet. Our duet to the song, “hey mama” by David Guetta and Nicki Minaj, was meant to be a sassy piece inspired by choreographer Matt Steffanina. His choreo is very hard hitting and sassy. When it came to actually choreographing our duet we tried to follow in his footsteps but it didn’t really work. In theory, the dance could have been amazing but me and Taylor chose to focus our time more on Bodak. We asked Ms. Dixon if we could do Bodak for our duet instead of Hey Mama she said no because the message behind the song was too sexual. This didn’t make sense to me because Hey Mama is just as sexual as Bodak. Dixon gave us way too much time to work on our duets and not enough time for anything else. This led to people like me and Taylor to procrastinate. I personally wish we had used our time wisely but at the same time I wish we were able to do bodak yellow as our duet.

Site Specific

Our site specific dance was located on the outside stairs in the back of the rec. Our dance was a contemporary piece to the song “sail” by awolnation. I was originally in a group with Alana and Jordana. We were doing a dance to the song “figures” by Jesse Reyes. The two stopped showing up to class and after a couple days I got fed up and asked Ms.Dixon to join another group. She told me I was allowed. I switched to a group with Taylor, Anastasia, Amanda, Tammy and Vannida. Because I switched so late in game i obviously wasn't in a lot of the dance. We danced on concrete stairs given we wore running shoes. That was a challenge in itself but all in all i think the dance went well, (aside from getting stares from people passing by). When we got our marks back I received a much lower mark than the rest of the girls in the group. There was no feedback on my rubric and i never asked about it, (that was dumb on my part). I still don't understand why my mark was so low. There was nothing I could do about the situation. My group members stopped showing up to class. I feel like it wasn't fair to me that she gave me a lower mark because of how little i was in the dance. I feel like she should have marked me on how well i picked up the choreo and contributed to the new group after only having a couple days.
