I’m thinking way too hard about my silly half life rewrite

So Douglas is my babygirl and he’s terrible. He’s a functioning alcoholic and is the leader of the defense branch of the human rebellion (planet has been taken by things from another dimension). Hes grumpy and an asshole but well respected by his soldiers. (Also he’s not human but that is a very well kept secret )

Now introducing Luiza. She was the leader when the rebellion first started (she went by Louis then, she’s trans). She was taken captive by the aliens and kept as a living trophy (but everyone thought she was dead). Shes been imprisoned for like 15 years and kept heavily drugged after she managed to escape her cell the first few times. But she gets out and rejoins the rebellion. Shes quiet but a force to be reckoned with.

Douglas was her right hand man when she led, so they bond over old times and the things they went through afterwards. Douglas took in her son (who unfortunately died before she got out. it’s why he has the knee brace). But they start to heal each other and give each other closure.

And they’re dating your honor.

The reason why so many of y'all's feminism sucks is because you still believe deep down in your hearts that there are only two kinds of people in the world: precious, ethereal, fragile dollthings called "women", and violent, lustful, rage-fueled apes called "men". Until you throw that idea away, 3rd-grade-tier "girls rule boys drool, girls are princesses and boys are stinky :(" is as feminist as we'll ever get-- and I hope it's obvious that that's lightyears away from the bare minimum of where we need to be.

I don't know how I'm supposed to explain to ostensibly trans-friendly feminists that "women are beautiful soft things made of glass, men are obsessed with violence and sex" is exactly what the patriarchy wants you to believe. Patriarchy wants you to believe that being a woman and/or having a vagina (patriarchy generally believes those two things are synonymous) makes one shatter on impact with reality. It makes you easier to control if you are scared shitless of the other half of the population, and it makes you more compliant with your lot in life if you believe it is in the nature of the other half of the population to rape and kill rather than realise those were choices those individual rapists and murderers made. There is no way to make gender essentialism progressive and feminist, because it is one of patriarchy's tools of subjugation. Stop trying to make it progressive.

And I can scream all of that from the rooftops over and over again, and what I hear in reply is "Trans men really are men because no woman would ever decide to become an inherently evil repugnant rapist ape", and "You're so right. Trans women are women because they too are pretty delicate little objects I can fuck", and "You're non-binary? So are you fucktoy non-binary or sexpest non-binary?", and my patience runs ever thinner.

yknow. i really appreciate ryan gosling's commitment to keeping the canon Grace reaction of just fucking crying the entire time. it's in character, and it's like, an extremely realistic reaction to the situation at hand. But. from most actor's ive heard (both irl friends and interviews from professionals) have bemoaned crying scenes in film, because it can be very draining and give you a splitting headache to do multiple takes etc etc. So they could have dialed it back and saved the tears for the more poignant moments. but no. they clearly went fuck it, we're committing. Grace is a Crier. here. have him crying in happiness, sadness, despair, terror, relief, disbelief, overwhelming joy. Have some heaving sobs. have some single tears. oohhh this man is gonna Cry about it.

Still thinking about how Grace was always treated as disposable. Kicked out of his passion field for his honesty—underpaid as a (very good) teacher, to the point he can’t afford a car—left alone in a room full of argon with a sample that might kill him, while all the indispensable guys who put him there stood on the other side of the glass and watched. Shoved screaming into a mission that would kill him. And then, then this bonkers little alien who just met him gladly trades years off his life (via extended return mission) to save him. Runs burning through deadly air to keep him from dying. Chooses finally to weave their lives together forever and recreate Grace’s best dreams of Earth to make him happy. No wonder Grace told Rocky he doesn’t have to get him a gift, he’s given him everything. To one little spider guy, Grace is irreplaceable. That’s love.

I was so scared they were heading for a romance subplot but congrats to Project Hail Mary for going for the far funnier option of 'Trolley Operator' and 'Guy She Is Actively Tying To The Tracks'. What a dynamic. Movie of the year.
