Though Mira was surprised to see him, Anders seemed to have been expecting her. Perhaps he'd seen her when she was inside. In answer though, he held up a bulging bag, light items inside clearly, the way he was able to just sling it about.

"Picking up a... donation, I suppose you could say," a small frown crossed his face briefly, but was quickly let go, "As might as I might love telling Sebastian just where he can stuff it, I can't afford to turn down good herbs, not when they're free. Even if the person giving them does wear Andraste on his crotch."

"Besides, it gives my patients some peace of mind." The poor of Darktown would know that Anders got the herbs for their potions and salves from the Chantry, he'd let it slip. It did them good to think of it, to think of the Maker helping them. They didn't need to know that the only help the Chantry gave them was the personal and unofficial help of a former Brother who paid with his own coin, and not the actual Sisters and Mothers.

So while the prince and the apostate were certainly not friends by any stretch of the imagination, it seemed that they could set their animosity aside, temporarily at least, for the good of others.

"What of you? I didn't think there was a daily service in the afternoon."

I did want to go ahead and apologize for how slow I've been on all my blogs recently. I've been quite distracted.

You see, in exactly a week from today, I'll be getting married! It's just a courthouse/town hall thing, no church/big ceremony, but there's still paperwork to do with it, plus some other planning with family and such, so I've been very distracted lately. I'll be trying to slowly go through things, and hopefully will speed up soon.

"M'fine... promise..." Alistair was anything but 'fine'. Neither was Shaeva, really. Their regular nightly patrol around the camp's perimeter, usually quiet, had been anything but that evening.

Both Wardens had already been tired after a long day of travel, apparently enough that a group of highway men had actually managed to get the jump on them. The battle hadn't been long, but it had been brutal, and while the Wardens had come out of it victorious, it was not without its cost.

Shaeva's mana was tapped out from the skirmish, and without their supplies on hand, she'd been forced to rip off the bottom portion of her cloak, in a desperate hope to keep Alistair's shoulder in place. His upper arm looked like it was going to rip out of the socket, the skin torn, and bleeding heavily. This couldn't wait until Shaeva's mana replenished, they needed to get him to Morrigan, or she to him. Quickly.

"I can get up..." Alistair struggled, his head clearly swimming, as he tried to put those wobbly legs into motion. "See?"

"It itches! And stings!" Alistair tried to get his voice to sound gruff, to grouse and complain, but it still came out as somewhat of a whine despite his efforts.

The poultice Kestrel was delicately applying to the back of his shoulder was one of Morrigan's concoctions, not from a regular apothecary, and he just knew she put something in it. Itching powder or something. He wouldn't put it past her.

He hadn't wanted to use it, he didn't want to owe Morrigan anything, but Kestrel had been insistent. They healed quickly as Wardens, but even as a Warden a wound from crude darkspawn arrows, his wound, would still fester if it wasn't treated.

He tried again to sit still, fighting the urge to squirm.

"I don't know why she couldn't just use magic."

The druid smiled, glancing up from his whittling to take a peek at Morren. "Precisely. Valor has its place, but there is something to be said for living to fight another day. The dead aren't courageous, after all."

Engaging in a battle you didn't have to, especially if the odds were stacked against you, might make some feel brave. But too often, Halsin found, it simply turned into a waste, cutting lives short for little to no gain. Not engaging in such things at all, be it hiding, running away, or negotiating with your would-be enemy, was preferable most of the time.

Until he actually physically saw Cailan in person, as a young adult, part of Alistair did kind of think that maybe Arl Eamon was his father.

He'd heard the whispers all the time as a kid, servants or occasionally villagers gossiped about it from time to time. It didn't make sense to them (and frankly to Alistair) that Eamon would have continued to support Alistair, the bastard son of his deceased servant, when he 'should have' taken the baby to a Chantry orphanage. And Alistair was a child the only time he'd met Maric, and a kid size Cailan. His memory of the meeting is hazy at best.

And while he mostly believe Eamon, when he told him the truth of his parentage, there was that little whisper in his head that it might not be true.

But then, seeing Cailan for the first time as an adult, in person... it was like looking in a slightly older, paler, and blonder mirror. Any doubts about that were gone.
