Do I start at fma or at fma: brotherhood? My app shows them as different shows so maybe they're different seasons?

If you’re new to FMA, I would recommend starting with FMA: Brotherhood, because it follows the manga closely and stays faithful to it. The anime excludes some fundamental scenes from the manga. So if you want the full experience, I’d recommend the manga if you’re up to the task.

The 2003 version follows the manga halfway through, but at that time, the manga was unfinished and the anime was catching up to it, they had to divert from the manga’s story, which completely changed the characters. The 2003 is extremely poignant and anti-climactic in my opinion.

I like the theory that there actually one continuous storyline and that at the end of the 2003 series truth was upset with how things were turning out and so decided to restart it with a few changes hence the last words of the series being truth saying “again”
