Hello! Welcome, once again, to my page! You can call me alpine, or alpineFasciation if you're gonna full-(internet)-name me. I write fics sometimes, as well as little drabbles! If they're really short, they'll go here – otherwise, it'll go on my AO3 (also alpineFasciation). I update here whenever I post something there, and also talk about symbolism, upcoming projects, and various other things. Aside from that, I also take requests! oh wow you guys really liked gracy rocky cry log #1 didn't you

so in general i think the project hail mary movie managed the emotional beats better than the book, but there is one point in the story where that fact becomes so fucking funny

and it's when grace is out on the hull of the ship trying to still collect the taumoeba collector even though so many things have gone wrong (with rocky telling him no don't do that you will die we can try again later)

because in the movie that "i don't think there is gonna be a later" is representative of the huge risk they've taken on this plan, the ship is falling apart as they go, this has to be done now, and grace is proving really for the first time that he is now willing to die to make this work and save both their planets

but in the book because of time constraints and length required both he and rocky were working on making the chain for that thing and they've done nothing but make chain for like a week straight (he mentions at one point the noodles he's having for dinner are just registering to his brain as small white edible chain)

so the thoughts going through book!grace's head at that point are just "if i have to make one more length of fucking chain im gonna kill myself"

Hello!! I am back with yet another piece of soft grace propaganda 😌 but is it propaganda if it's canon? Who knows! You should read it though. To check if you're resistant to propaganda

Summary:

Grace cries a lot. I, as his best friend and the only sensible entity on this ship, have made a list to start investigating his idiosyncrasies. We have been heading for Erid together for a few months. So far, Grace has cried over: - His breakfast burrito - A photo of a monkey he saw on the portable thinking machine - Me (I was sitting next to him. We were not talking. I think I got an extra leaky one) Or: Grace cries. A lot. Rocky, the sensible Eridian he is, starts taking notes.

Anyone else thinking about how Important names are to Eridian culture, considering how Rocky addressed himself and Adrian, and what that would mean once Grace got to Erid. (ignore statements of time i refuse to do the conversions)

Imagine, after decades of your world becoming colder and colder, you are saved. A single Eridian, the only one of twenty three to survive, arrives in an alien ship, accompanied by a creature you can barely conceive.

Everything about the alien is so loud, hinges formed from tissue thumping and stretching in constant movement, even while unconscious. Completely organic, reliant of oxygen and hydrogen. Instead of a protective carapace, it regrows its damaged tissues. It has senses you do not, and technology so unlike your own, both able to utilise a force you have never heard of. The same force that killed almost your entire mission team. Highly adaptable, able to teach itself how to fly its ship in under a week, able to become fluent in the engineer's dialect in less than four years.

And if Erid's best engineer is correct (and there's no reason it wouldn't be), this creature not only managed to breed a predator of the warmth-taker to survive in various atmospheres, including Threeworld's, but also turned around to provide aid when it discovered that the predator could escape xenonite.

And you think: Surely, this creature which protects itself without a carapace, which sleeps so lightly and knows so much and learns so quickly, which saved two planets at the cost of ever returning to its thrum, surely, a creature so extraordinary must have a name to match

And you think: Perhaps it is strength, Mountain-Base or Lonsdaleite-Carapace. Perhaps it is intellect, Diamond-Claw or Lockpick-Mind. Perhaps it is courage, Song-Through-Silence or Path-Carver

And you think: None of these names hold the true weight of what this creature is to them. How do you describe something like that, which aids without expectation of anything in return, which risks its own life for the sake of a species it cannot touch, which performs miracles simply because it was asked.

And then you learn: Your saviour's name is Kindness

He gains his shifter status at seven.

This is not a good thing. It’s a trauma response, a stress indicator, something that is pitied by society and eased by extensive therapy. While it’s easier for people who have shifted once to gain more animals during future unhappy life events, the ultimate goal is to keep it isolated to just the one, and for that one to rarely make an appearance.

By the time he’s 20, Ryland Grace has managed to collect three.

rocky doesnt need to ask grace when the last time he slept was. rocky can hear the whole hail mary + watches every time grace sleeps + has perfect memory he just asks that to be a cunt

So in (movie) Project Hail Mary when Grace is running trying to escape being sent to die by his friend, like… he gets all the way to the fence. There HAD to be people who saw him running from Stratt’s men. The scientists he’d been working with and the friends he’d made on the ship and people who KNEW him, people who saw this goofy guy who is a key part of the Project running for his life. They would then hear that he was the replacement scientist. They would have looked at the official records of the launch and see that he was put into a coma days before hand. They would know. They would know.

What would they think? Would they think he’s a coward, would they think back on him with pity and regret and sadness, would some of them be angry with Stratt, or would they know exactly what had happened? Does Carl forgive Stratt, knowing it absolutely had to be done but unable to look her in the eye ever again? Ryland Grace is hailed a hero. But there are people who know what they did to that poor, cowardly science teacher, and people who know that there were no better options.

Thinking about Grace sobbing and begging with his face in the grass, knowing this will be his last memory of Earth and watching Carl do nothing to save him. Waking up and meeting Rocky and finally remembering ‘Oh. I’m a coward.’ And wondering if the person he was before the Hail Mary died when he woke up in space.
