Back on the 8th July 2016, I was kindly asked by Edinburgh Boxing Coach Bradley Welsh – who also plays Mr Doyle in T2, if I would like to attend the club for a day shooting a scene with Danny Boyle and Ewan Bremner (who plays Spud) for T2 Trainspotting. Naturally I accepted.
The planned scene was to involve a very apprehensive Spud entering the Edinburgh boxing club in a bid to get fit and turn his life around once and for all.
Myself along with two dozen boxers from both Castle Boxing Gymnasium and Holyrood Boxing Gym watched on quietly as Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle along with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle and a their production crew took command of the scene and all its elements.
The sequence that followed showed Spud entering the club wide eyed and full of apprehension, before entering the boxing ring for a round of pad work. Whilst hitting the pads under instruction from amateur boxer Phil Coppola, Spud accidently strikes the trainer in the face with a misplaced shot. This in turn is met with one crushing left hook to Spuds jaw, subsequently knocking the hapless fool out for the count. Check out the videos below.
As Spud hits the floor a dream sequence is triggered. No longer is he the ill fated junkie from Leith, but a winner. A champion. Bursting with confidence Spud now enters the ring sporting a flashy boxing robe fit for a world title holder, and celebrates to the noise of screaming fans all chanting the name… SPUD…SPUD…SPUD!
Sadly this part of the scene was cut from the final edit which is a shame as not only did it look great, but it was very amusing.
My part along with twenty four other boxing regulars, were used as background extras in the scene which was shot over a 5 hour period. Watching Academy Award winning Danny Boyle at work was a real privilege and one I will remember forever. He was very down to earth, very respectful to everyone around him and extremely intuitive. And of course there was Ewan Bremner who was utterly exhilarating to watch play Spud. Anjela Nedyalkova who plays Veronika in the film was also there (see pics below) but was not required for this particular scene.
