Hiya!! I’m trying to write a poetry book, so I’ve stopped posting new poems online and kinda hit a wall when it comes to getting feedback on my writing. So I went ahead and made a discord server where hopefully poets can come together and share and exchange feedback on each other’s work. Darkness by Altaaf Pillay

I'm trapped in the darkness,

I feel so afraid.

The walls are closing in,

No one to come to my aid.

I'm trapped in the darkness,

I'm filled with so much rage.

The walls are closing in,

Time to put this anger on a page.

I'm trapped in the darkness,

All I do is sit here and feel pain.

The walls are closing in,

It's time to open up before I go insane.

I'm trapped in the darkness,

All I ever did was chase the wealth.

The walls are closing in,

Because I neglected my health.

I'm trapped in the darkness,

I don't feel like I can win.

The walls are closing in,

But I'll never give in.

I'm trapped in the darkness,

I feel so alone.

But I will overcome this even if I have to do it on my own.

Community of Poetry

So I have a group chat here called Community of Poetry, and I really want to get to know the people in it. I see so many poetry group chats where everyone is just saying “Look at me! Read my poems!” And there isn’t really any connection or even conversation about poetry. So I thought I’d make some questions and tag my group so they can answer them as well. Some are about writing and some are just fun!

When and why did you start writing? I’ve been writing for fun basically since I learned my alphabet, but I didn’t really get into poetry until around 2017. Poetry is definitely a coping mechanism for me, and it helps me get out my thoughts and emotions. I think it’s the most effective way I’ve found to bear it all and be honest.

What do you usually write about/favorite topic to write on? I generally just write about whatever is going on in my life. If I’m in love, I write about love. If I’m depressed, I write about depression. I also write quite a bit about trauma and difficult past events from my life.

Who are some of your favorite poets to read? Olivia Gatwood and Jeffrey McDaniel blow me away with every poem they write. Niel Hilborn and Rachel Wiley definitely impress me to no end as well. Going more classic, I also love some Walt Whitman and Robert Louis Stevenson. Can’t forget about Ted Kooser. There are too many! Sorry.

What types of poems do you write? I’m very very free verse, and I don’t like rhyming. I think that rhyming can take away from the seriousness of a topic.

If you were a chair, what kind of chair would you be? I would be a folding camping chair, but the mini kind for little kids. I absolutely loved those when I was little.

How old are you? I’m 18.

Coffe, tea, or energy drinks? I like to think of myself as a tea girl, but I’ve been drinking coffee lately because I need more caffeine.

What’s your favorite color? Maroons, burgundies, and olive green. I also love grayscale colors.

Thank you so much, @trashfirepoet for creating this awesome group and for creating these questions. I had so much fun answering them and really ecstatic to be part of this group.

When and why did you start writing? Back in 2013 I developed a crush on a girl by just looking at her and that experience was the first time thatbi ever felt love at first sight and because of that, I started writing for the first time ever.

What do you usually write about/favourite topic to write on? My favourite topic to write on is love. I usually enjoy writing about my feelings and my emotions so it's a mix of happiness, sadness and sometimes even anger. Recently I started writing poetry against political matters and poetry regarding what happens around us.

Who are some of your favourite poets to read? Some of my all-time favourite poets include Rupi Kaur, William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Maya Angelou, Rudyard Kipling, Oscar Wilde amd many more!

What types of poems do you write? I write all sorts of poems. Serious poems, playful poems, poems that rhyme, poems that don't rhyme, as long as I'm writing then I'm happy!

If you were a chair, what kind of chair would you be? If I were a chair, I'd be a big stable, chair that never collapses no matter how much weight is put on it and this is because I support my family and friends to the fullest extent without fail and I never stop supporting them and just being there for them no matter how big the burden is on me.

How old are you? I'm 20.

Coffee, tea or energy drink? Coffee is my all-time favourite, I really enjoy drinking it and have it at least once or twice a day!

What is your favourite colour? I have three favourite colours. Black, red and gold. I like black because it just gives me this feeling of power, even in darkness there is so much power waiting to be harnessed. I like red because it's such a nice colour, it makes so many things just pop. I like gold because it has his beauty to it, almost like an unspoken but eye-catching beauty to it.
