intro post!

hey! I’m Zephyr, and Welcome to my alterhuman gear suggestions blog! I’ve noticed that a lot of alterhumans can’t find good gear for their kins, or complain that all gear suggestions are for popular species.

so, I’ve decided to find gear for unique kins!

all you have to do is send an ask and include the following information:

•kintype (this can be anything, but if it’s a fictional character or species, please provide some info on them or lmk where I can research them) •what kind of Dysphoria you experience/what you would like to experience through your gear •aaaand- a budget! (If you don’t include a budget, I’ll probably use things you can buy, but asks with a budget will include recommendations for easy crafts and links to diy tutorials)

I’m personally a therian, cryptidkin, conceptkin, fictionkin, vampirehearted, and cargender, so nothing is off the table! Any and all kins are welcome, the more unique, the better the challenge!

Imo literally anything can be alterhuman gear if you consider it such. I consider my kandi bracelets (not all of them) that have the names of my fictionkins on them gear

I was wondering if you had an idea of gear for an Eastern style dragon? I have blue and brown fur, and no wings, but horns! I don’t know if there’s anything you would suggest, but I have no budget :] just happy to hear ideas!

Sooo eastern style dragon, let's get started.

Fur

similar to what I told the last asker, faux fur coats, fuzzy sweaters, and arm/leg warmers are great options for mimicking fur. I personally have a soft carpet-like jacket that gives me an insane amount of euphoria in the winter.

not sure if you have scales or not, but if you do, there are a few methods.

1: you can shave the shape of scales into fur, if you’re willing to edit some fuzzy clothes.

Absolutely! As long as I can get a physical description and a quick synopsis of character traits/how a being feels about their kin, I can absolutely do fictionkin gear.

The therian and otherkin communities really do harbour a lot of unexamined racism.

And I understand why. For many of us, our identities are inherently based in wanting to be seen, treated, as something other than human. We're often eager to disavow humanity, having spent so long being forced into that role, and so we embrace ideas of dehumanisation. But we don't often consider that alterhumans of colour, who have long histories of being treated as subhuman and having their humanity denied, might have more complex relationships with these narratives.

As a community in the internet age, we have the myths and legends of the whole world at our fingertips. But we often give very little care to the meanings of those myths and the cultures they come from. (Are you actually a human possessed by an Algonquin spirit of starvation, after falling prey to greed and the exploitation of other people? Or are you a woods monster with a skull-deer head? Because the former is not the latter, and if you actually are the former, a lot of Native Americans are going to be rightfully upset by you, as that spirit represents immense amounts of cruelty that was done to them and is still being done to them.)

And then there are the myths and legends that are explicitly tied to racism. The New Age narrative of starseeds and ancient alien ancestors originates in white supremacy (we never see Black alien progenitors, but we do see explicitly "Nordic" ones), antisemitism (anything to do with the world being secretly run by alien lizardfolk, which have widely been understood by Jewish scholars as code for the Jews), and literal Nazi occult practices. While some starseeds disavow racism, disavowing it personally is not enough- not when the community continues to circulate white supremacist beliefs.

And then of course there's the police dog thing. No, it doesn't make you evil to have been a police dog, or to have enjoyed having been one. No one can expect you to have understood racism as a dog. But you have this body and mind now, you are aware of racism now, and you are aware of the baseless cruelty of the police, the countless Black and Brown communities that have been terrorised by the police and K9 units. You have the choice to keep condoning this system, or to learn about it and the harm it does. Perhaps that's what you're meant to do as a dog in this life- perhaps that's why you're here, why you've been given this mind and this awareness in this current time. To become a better, more compassionate being than you were in the past.

This isn't to say you're not a dog who served the police, or a kitsune, or an alien from the Pleiades, or an animal who enjoys dehumanisation. (I'm that last one myself!) But we have to understand that when we talk about these things uncritically, when we're wilfully ignorant and don't do the research or care about how these ideas might make people of colour feel, we are driving said people away from the community and making it a very, very white space.

African civet please? (Specifically fur/pattern dysphoria, but anything is fine ^^)

hey! This is a great request, and I just want to say I’ve got a beautiful creature in my askbox. I’ve genuinely never seen a civet before, and you’re super cool.👍

Here we go! African civet.

So, not gear, but a suggested haircut would be a type of Mohawk/mullet that mimic’s the longer hackles down a theriform Civet’s spine.

something like these, but with darker browns and black to match.

If you aren’t willing/ able to make a change like that (obviously no pressure, I’m not in a situation where I can cut my hair either.) a good way to mimic the feel and look of fur is with faux fur coats. (Or natural, if you know a proven ethical seller)

Leopard print/spotted coat that looks pretty similar to a civet.

another option would be to get an unpatterned coat or sweater that reminds you of your fur texture, and dye it yourself to match your coat.

Dye on faux fur

on top of coats and sweaters, you might find that just covering your limbs offers enough species euphoria, especially when it’s hot out. In that case, you could wear leg and arm warmers, and use the same methods as the tops if you cannot find a print that is close enough to your coat.

Of course, the fur coats or limb warmers could have patterns on them, if you want patterns on your actual skin, there are a few options.

If its ok may I ask for gear suggestions for a forest spirit/guardian? I am good with anything you could think of though if it helps I do wish this body was more plant or tree-like with some more general animalistic features

Okay, I’m so sorry but I have tried to respond to this ask twice now and tumblr keeps reloading and deleting my progress! 🥺😤

so, I’m gonna try to answer without links. I’m sorry, that puts a bit more work on you, but I’ll try to explain it the best I can.

plant-like skin.

If you would like your skin to directly look plant-like, I’d suggest henna, to draw wood grain, vines, bark, or flowers on your skin directly. Henna lasts about 2 weeks. A more temporary option is temporary tattoos, if you can find designs you like.

Vine and plant-looking clothes. Are an option if you want to take on and off your plant-like skin. Lace tights and gloves come in many patterns and can look very similar to some flowers and vines. floral patterned tops, skirts, leggings, suits, and dresses are also options, if you aren’t fond of the form-fitting lace tights and gloves.

makeup!

there are many tutorials for forest-themed makeup looks on YouTube, instagram, and tiktok. Some examples to search for could be “deer makeup look”, “forest fairy makeup”, or “mushroom makeup”

Animal gear

you can find tutorials for forming fangs with thermoplastic beads on YouTube! As well as diy fursuit or “therian” masks, if you know what kind of look or silhouette you’re going for.

you can find deer antlers (even tree branch antlers), deer ears, bunny ears, wolf ears, elf/pointed ears, and animal tails everywhere online, it’s more just based on what kinds of creatures you’d prefer to look the most like.

miscellaneous!

stilts. I’m not sure how tall your kintype would be (as I’m also a cryptid forest guardian, but more of a spooky eldritch one), but height can be a big factor! Stilts can be a bit pricey, so if you cant afford running stilts (the curved ones), then heels might be a good alternative. There are also hoof/paw shoes without any heels in the back that you could buy or make yourself.

claws! There are gardening gloves specially made with digging claws on the fingers. There are also tutorials online for attaching fake nails to sheer gloves if you’re more interested in a look than practicality. You can also just use fake nails on your actual nails.

Incubus demon and/or Alfred Alfer fictionkin? :3

First: incubus!

I did some limited research on Wikipedia, and looked at some art, both old and modern, and here’s what I came up with:

wings! many depictions of incubi include leathery bay wings, so here are some you can find selling online.

Scent.

incubi and sucubi are known for being charming and seducing, rather than terrifying. So, something that may help with that feeling would be scents. Either a very high-quality perfume, body oils, or lotion that smells (in your opinion), seducing.

people seem to really like the scent of chocolate, vanilla, and smoke/earthen smells. But some people also enjoy wood or fruit scents, so it truly just depends on your own personal opinion.

Chocolate perfume this one has the added benefits of woody and vanilla in its undertones.

earthy cologne just the name and description on this one would make me more confident lol.

Pheromone cologne if you want something more natural. This one claims to be subtle.

teeth!

if fangs is something you would like, you can find fangs of different lengths online, or for a cheaper version, you can use the moldable plastic beads for more custom ones!

I will admit that I know nothing about him and had to do research, please forgive me. 🥲

teeth, again, which you can refer to above for. It seems like you might want to search for more canine-like teeth instead for this one though.

custom “therian” masks and fursuit heads make for some nice character mimics, if you are able to craft one yourself or order a custom one.

he does have a tail! So perhaps a beige-colored floppy fox tail or just a small fursuit tail may help.

he seems to have a purple nose, so maybe purple blush or eyeshadow on your nose may help with that one, and he also seems to wear various outfits, so maybe keeping similar outfits on hand would be nice for when you’re feeling particularly Alfred-y
