ZIEGLER BEING IN EGYPT, but it wasn’t until everyone kept talking about Mercy that I knew you were actually here.” A small smile as she removes her helmet revealing the udjet tattoo under her right eye, a similar marking to the one her mother once bore--well still bore if the mysterious letter she’d received was to be believed. It had been a while since she’d seen the infamous doctor, and no doubt Fareeha looked a little different than the bright eyed 20 something year old fresh out of boot camp she’d been the last time they’d met, but seeing her now brought back a well of memories spent on the Overwatch base. “It’s been so long, it’s good to see you again.”

unpopular opinion but: I’m glad Pharah wasn’t in the mercy short story

listen, I get it. I REALLY get it. We all live for these tidbits of lore we get, and will all spend days analyzing the hell out of them and make a feast out of the little trail of breadcrumbs Blizzard leaves us, but I’m honestly happy Pharah wasn’t in Valkyrie. An @ mention would have been cool, or a little passing note of her being there would have been fine, but I’m honestly okay with her not being in the story all. Why? Well...

Y’all don’t know how tired I am of seeing Pharah’s name always directly attached to Mercy’s, and no one ever really giving her the time of day unless she’s the other half of a ship. Pharah is like one of the very few good representations of a MENA woman, of a MENA character in general tbh, and I get real tired of nobody caring about her unless she’s with a white woman. That’s not me trying to shade pharmercy shippers or anything, because I don’t care what other people ship nor am I here to ruin other people’s fun by shit talking something they love. What I am gonna say is that I want to see more of these characters outside of their popular ship, and this goes for Mercy too. 

It’s about time we got something for Mercy lore wise, and this story was her time to shine and I’m over the moon seeing her reaction to everything that has happened, and her thoughts on the recall, like they did a really good job with it and I’m glad she got her spotlight. In all honesty, I don’t think there was really any place for Pharah to be in that short story without it diverting real fast. A short story has to accomplish so much already with a limited amount of space, and I really don’t think there was room for that kind of diversion to take place? or her to be just dropped in? Like I said, an @ mention would have been cool, but I’m really glad it wasn’t in there because like Mercy, Pharah deserves to have her own time too. 

She already has a really nice comic out that I believe was released near when the game came out, and while I’d like to see more, there are a LOT of characters that have barely anything written or said about them that also deserve the spotlight, who I’d love to see more of in the future. And with Overwatch 2 on the horizon I’m sure we will get a lot more, but for now I’m chill with what we got for Mercy today.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO IT?” She’s more perplexed than angry at the moment, even if the hacker’s actions had caused to essentially drop straight out of the sky, only to land directly on her tail bone. Luckily her suit’s emergency systems were still intact to cushion her fall enough so that no bones were broken. But had she been any higher, it was almost certain that she could have died from the impact alone. Bracing herself against the sturdy weight of her rocket launcher, she slowly stands up with a not so subtle wince as her bruised limbs press against the heavy armor and metal that make up the Raptora Mark VI. “How is it, that top of the line military hardware is suddenly dysfunctional when all you did was wiggle your fingers in my direction? Fix it, now.”

“SEE, I TOLD YOU I COULD SHOOT, even if you never believed I could.” It’s all said in jest of course. This isn’t the same as when they were kids messing around with toys, these were real guns, loaded with real ammunition. They’re in the practice range on the Overwatch base, taking shots at the various moving targets designed to test your speed and accuracy. And she’d been hitting all of them--even if she wasn’t necessarily a sharpshooter like her partner. Reloading her gun, she takes aim once again. “What do you think? Another round?”

“YOU KNOW, WE NEVER GOT around to going to that pro basketball game like you promised me.” She’s said her goodbyes to almost everybody at the Overwatch base, to all the people she’d come to know as an extended family over the years, who’d watched her grow into the young woman she was now. Who’d all inspired to be her own hero. Reinhardt, Torbjorn, Winston, Lena, Dr. Ziegler, were all close friends who’d she’d grown up with over the years. But there were a few who saying farewell to required more than just a hug and pat on the back, who made it all the more difficult to leave behind without at least a few moments spent together. “Guess you’ll just have to take me as a present when I graduate from basic training.”

“YOU ARE EITHER EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT, or extremely foolish to think you can slip into Helix security so easily.” Gone is the heavy rocket launcher, and sharp helmet she usually wore on these missions. For now they’ve been set aside, so as to better interrogate the unwanted guest handcuffed before her. “Now you’re going to tell me who you are working for and why you’re here, or you will be going on a short flight with a very rough landing.”

“HOW MAD DO YOU THINK SHE’LL BE? Will she never talk to me again?” A form scrawled in and completed with neat calligraphy is offered to the other. It may only be a single sheet of paper, but the weight of it feels heavy enough to crush her. It was the enlistment form for the Egyptian Army. Not only that, it marked the single, most important decision of her life, one that she’d made entirely on her own without any sort of external pressure, or well meaning but firm parental guidance from her mother. For the first time she was taking charge of her own fate, and the freedom was thrilling. But that thrill was outweighed by the guilt already settling into the pit of her stomach. With her father an entire ocean away, and an altogether lovingly distant force in her life, she’d come to confide in the only other family she had, someone she knew would understand her, someone who’d always been there for her. “I just--I want to do this, I need to do this, but I don’t want her to think that I don’t respect her, or don’t love her. What do you think? How did your parents react when you enlisted?”
