Detailed map of European infrastructure (white dots are bus stations, yellow dots are train stations). Designed and built in Mapbox.
Interact with it here:
Widening the 405 is like finding a slightly bigger sponge to throw in the ocean, whereas a north-south line along that corridor is ideal. Getting rail to LAX, which I’m committed to doing. With the Expo Line, if you live on the far west side, you’ll have an option next year to go from ‘the sand to the symphony’ in 40 minutes. And the Crenshaw Line will be a gamechanger for South Los Angeles.” —Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti
The sponge thing. SO TRUE.

I have to check this out because
1) I live in Kyoto, and
2) I hate the urban planning here.
I love this project in Winnipeg by Toronto-based RAW Design where giant, colourful balls made of pool noodles have added some much needed colour into a grey winter environment. They also work to trap warmth so you can dive in and thaw your face.
It’s silly and weird, sure, but we could use a bit more of that in our public spaces, especially in the winter.

Today’s top book news item: The slam poet and novelist Maggie Estep died Wednesday, days after having a heart attack, The New York Times reports. She was 50.
Estep helped to popularize slam poetry through appearances on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and MTV in the 1990s. The Timeswrites, “Ms. Estep’s poetry was characterized by gritty honesty, black humor and a post-punk brand of feminism. … Her poems, which she delivered relentlessly, were a cascade of images, often tinged with absurdity, violence and innuendo.”
If you’re not familiar with her work, this reading is a great place to start.
If I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.

Tech Campus Housing Studies:
The booming tech industry has created huge demand for housing in the San Francisco Bay Area, driving up housing costs and leading to long commutes. Meanwhile, tech workers flock to San Francisco and Oakland, seeking the high-density urban environment that Silicon Valley lacks. What might it look like if tech campuses replaced their parking lots and provided all the necessary housing on-site?
