What are your reasons for loving maul besides doomed by the narrative, unhinged, goth af , and bald?
Unironic answer is that I think he’s a fascinating character.
Maul is raised in an abusive environment to be a perfect Sith warrior, a man who has never known love or kindness or mercy. He has everything taken from him again and again, and still finds the strength to persist, if to his own detriment. He’s a victim of Sidious, yes, but most tragically he’s a victim to his own actions; a victim of the cycle of oppression and torment he continues to perpetuate long after Sidious has discarded him like trash. Literally. He perpetuates the cycle because all he knows is hatred— until his brother. Then his brother is taken and he has nothing again. He hates his master but owes his life to him, the ultimate tragedy of the abuser-victim dynamic.
He was plucked from a world where he would have otherwise been subservient, was given great power, and it immediately went to his head. He is good at what he does. He’s good at killing and rising to power. He’s good at having no attachments and is similarly good at losing the only things he cares about (his physical prowess and later his brother and the only creature who ever cared for him). But again and again it slips through his fingers until there’s nothing left but what could have been. And that KILLS me.
