Gilmore Girls Parallels - the beginning and the end (1.01 // 7.22)

Also known as The Most Obvious Parallel Ever, almost every Gilmore fan who’s seen the series in its entirety would be able to tell you that the last scenes from the first and last episodes mirror each other. I just thought I’d lay it out visually so we can see exactly how this happens, and also to notice any differences between the two.

Most importantly, both scenes take place at Luke’s, with the main participants being Lorelai, Rory and Luke. Luke is serving them/taking their order, and all three of them exchange glances and smiles. The scenes then fade out as Lorelai and Rory chat and Luke works in the background.

There are a few differences that might be interesting to look at. For instance, the time of day - the first time, it’s evening/nighttime (after Friday Night Dinner, so probably around 9 or 9:30pm. The second time it’s really early in the morning, around 5am. The first time they’re surrounded by tons of people eating at the diner, the second time it’s just them.

Another thing that’s different are the clothes and even hair. In the first scene, they’re all dressed up quite nice (even Luke, who almost never dresses up, especially not when he’s working). He’s not wearing a baseball cap either (shocker!) and his hair is neatly shaved and groomed. Lorelai and Rory’s hair is both straight and smooth in the first, and kind of messy/wavy in the second. Everyone’s clothes are also very casual in the last scene.

I think that’s an interesting contrast - to signify the beginning we have the very put-together, polished look that’s sort of full of life and promise for the future. Then at the end it’s worn out and weathered, as if after a long day, and yet their smiles are just as bright and full of hope.
