"Your favorite book?" Clara's eyebrows rose. "Well, that settles it, we've got to find that page, then. Can't be missing the last page of your favorite book." Getting to her knees, Clara peered under the desk in search of the page, glancing up with her brow furrowed after a moment. "Never, really? Do your parents teach you at home?"

Reunion || Clara and Eleven

With an indignant splutter, the Doctor began to argue — and then realised that he couldn’t, and closed his mouth again. He didn’t miss on purpose, but neither did they land in exactly the right place a great proportion of times. Which was no one’s fault, really, but Clara had a way of taking apart his arguments.

Everything all worked out in the end anyway.

Turning to the mass of stars laid out in front of them again, and appearing to blatantly ignore her last comments, he reached around to rest his arm on her shoulder, without really being aware of the movement. Even though he knew her far less than she seemed to know him, it felt right, sitting there with her. His had been a lonely and painful existence after the Ponds. Until she came along.

He wondered briefly whether she knew that yet, then tried to shake the thought from his mind. Today was not a day to think about sad things.

“Do I still have to come back on Wednesdays only?”

Clara gave a chuckle as he ignored her, clearly not knowing how to refute her words. She leaned into him easily as his arm wrapped around her, and felt a fleeting urge to kiss him again, but for now there was the Eagle Nebula to look at, and she was still letting it sink in that there would be plenty of time to kiss him for the next...

No, she wasn't going to assign a time frame. If she thought of how long she'd had with him the first time, she'd know how much time was left before he left again, and she didn't want to be counting down the days until she had to start learning to let go all over again. It didn't matter exactly how much time she had left; all that mattered was that she had time.

Blinking at the sound of his voice, and pulling herself out of her thoughts, Clara tore her eyes away from the colors gradually shifting in front of them to look at him. A smile crossed her face almost involuntarily at the question, the reminder that he was coming back, before she realized with a jolt how fortunate it was he'd asked; she couldn't having him showing up on a Wednesday and bumping into his next regeneration, could she?

"Actually, I'm a teacher now, so my weekdays are pretty busy. Probably better if you start coming on Fridays, or... whenever you want, really, and as often as you want. But my Wednesdays get kind of hectic now, so... maybe a different day from now on."

Absolution || Time Lady Verse

Good hands? The Doctor was almost certain his TARDIS had never been in better hands, but he didn’t say anything. He, too, was dying to show off his TARDIS - he never missed an opportunity to show people his bigger-on-the-inside time machine. Of course, her reaction would be completely different, but Clara was likely to appreciate it more, given that she properly understood the scope of such an incredible machine.

“Let’s get going, then.” He jumped up out of his seat, eager to get moving, and dug in his pockets for any sign of Earth currency. They’d been sitting around, talking and drinking tea and doing nothing for ten minutes — far too long, in his opinion. Moving made it feel as though they were taking another step towards bringing Gallifrey back.

Dropping a few notes on the table — they were probably pounds, but who knew — he pushed in his chair and weaved his way around the little tables to the door, straightening his bow tie. Now that they were finally managing to get along, and work together, the possibility of bringing the Time Lords back seemed so much more realistic.

“After you,” he said, as he held the door open and stood back to let her through, beaming.

The young Time Lady raised an eyebrow at the exuberance with which he hopped right out of his seat, almost like the chair had burned him for sitting in it too long. She stood as well, with a lot more composure and grace, but there was an almost manic light showing through in her eyes, betraying, if he bothered to notice, her own excitement.

Only half an hour ago, she'd thought her planet was gone, her people killed, her home destroyed, and now... now she was going to save them.

Clara waited for him to scrounge up whatever money he had in his pockets and place it on the table, resisting the urge to tap her foot or give any other sign of impatience. She'd much rather maintain her dignity and let him be the one to emanate an aura of eagerness and excited energy.

Following him instantly, Clara felt the smallest of smiles tug at her lips as she watched him reach up to straighten his bow tie, but when they reached the door and he stepped back to let her walk through first, she paused. Some small part of her wondered if she should really go anywhere with this man.

Only half an hour ago, she'd thought he was a murderer, a cold-hearted monster who'd destroyed his own planet, and now... now she trusted him like she'd known him all her life.

And she was going to save Gallifrey with him. Flashing a bright smile his way, Clara stepped through and started in the direction they'd come from. "If you say so, Chin. So, what's first, then?"

"…And that’s why chickens have the little hangy things from the bottoms of their mouths…”

The group of students awed at his story, wide eyes growing wider at the strange man with the bowtie and purple suit. The Doctor straightened the bowtie then, basking in the glory of the youth of today admiring him and another one of his stories. He always did like to tell stories.

Over the young group of kids who were demanding another magnificent tale from him, the Doctor noticed a familiar brunette poking her head out a classroom door. His hearts immediately picked up pace when he smiled at Clara and quickly excused himself from her students to go to her.

He leaned against the door frame and crossed his arms, giving the kids one last quirky smile before turning his full attention to Clara.

"I should come around more often. Your students seem to like me." He smirked. "Are you ready for today’s adventure? I don’t really have anything interesting in mind compared to other travels, but if you want to do something certain then i’m all ears."

Clara was caught between an exasperated sigh and an affectionate chuckle as the Doctor made himself quite comfortable in her classroom, seemingly as confident and at ease as if he belonged there, leaning so casually against her door frame and beaming at her students. Rolling her eyes, Clara reached over to give him a light, playful shove that couldn't have budged him more than an inch, her eyes catching on his smirk.

"No, I don't think you should," she replied, unable to suppress the wide grin on her face and the light in her eyes, her joy at seeing him winning out over her frustration. "I work here, Doctor. These kids are supposed to be learning and I'm supposed to do the teaching, I can't have my best friend just popping in whenever he likes. That's not how jobs work."

Still, the grin remained on her face, and Clara found herself moving closer to him without having decided to, her hand still resting on his arm from where she'd gently pushed at him. Catching a student's suggestive expression over the Doctor's shoulder, she dropped her hand, her smile shifting to one that looked slightly more professional. "Of course I'm ready, Doctor, but can't it wait until, oh, I don't know, I'm done at school?"

The Doctor didn’t want to feel relieved, didn’t want to make her feel as though she couldn’t date anyone else, because it wasn’t any of his business, but he did. And he couldn’t stop from getting ahead of himself with that thought.

He didn’t think there was a human alive who deserved to date someone like her. Maybe not a single creature in the universe. Not even him. She was too good, too kind, too smart. Clara was almost too perfect. And she was here with him, in his TARDIS, eating fish custard.

It wasn’t often the universe was kind to him. But whether he deserved it or not, today the universe had been very kind to him.

“Hmm, yes. A minor inconvenience, perhaps. The bow tie’s good, though. Makes everything better.” He reached past her to grab another fish finger, noting that their supply was dwindling very quickly, and nodded, looking rather pleased with himself.

“There’s nothing quite so romantic as being in mortal peril in a different time period.”

Clara could see the relief on his face, however much he tried not to feel it, and she had to duck her head to hide the smile tugging at the corners of her lips. It still felt impossibly foreign to her, knowing that the Doctor cared enough to be glad she was with him and not someone else, and that he was ridiculous enough to ever think there was a possibility that she might have been.

Didn't he know? How could he not understand that from the moment he came into her life she was done for? He was brilliant and funny and mad and impossible, but even more than that he cared about everyone he met, and he was so kind. He didn't walk away. And more than anything else, he needed her, and, well, she'd never stood a chance, not really. She loved him.

She'd loved him completely and fiercely, almost right from the moment she'd met him. How could there ever have been someone else—how could she not love the man who'd shown her the stars?

Clara couldn't help giving a roll of her eyes. "You and your bow ties. And it's a bit more than an inconvenience, Doctor; I could hardly expect any relationship to work when I was more devoted to the brilliant spaceman I was constantly popping off with than to whoever I was with."

She paused, reaching up to tap the tip of his nose. "'Cause you're my best friend, you know. I'd put you first, every time, even if I hadn't fallen for you over all those incredibly romantic, harrowing and nearly life-ending trips to different times and places."

If she did any of those, she would get a stern lecture from me. She used to be fine with my companion in my ninth regeneration. Maybe this regeneration and my hotness made her easily jealous."
