South Yarrows South Chambered Long Cairn, nr Wick, Caithness, 21.2.19.
Of all the sites I visited over the last week, this may have been my favourite. This massive cairn is of similar size to the long cairn at Camster although in a more ruinous state. The cairn clearly had multiple chambers (robbed and collapsed) that ran along the length of the structure but perhaps the most notable feature is the grandiose forecourt structure similar to horned cairns. Although clearly not as ‘tidied’ as Camster, it appears all the more authentic; a startling prehistoric monument and only one of multiple cairns in use at this locale.
